(Most of the video is about video games, mostly GTA 4)

(from 0:00 to around 4:00 cites an anti video game study, then around 70:00 to around 75:00 goes on an anti video game rant. Sorry that I am just estimating on the time placements.)

Wow, what an obnoxious guy.

It's an individual's responsibility not to mess himself up with videogames, alcohol, cigarettes, cars etc. and if they do then you can't really hold anyone to account but the individual.

I also believe games do more good than harm by making them think and solve logic problems and learn stuff and also hone their reflexes to super-leet levels.

So I don't think much of his anti video game arguments.

There'll always be people like that.

"Comic books are bad because Venom from the Spider- man franchise has a big tongue and he uses it for crime, so young kids are impressed so much that they steal cars with their tongues".

"Cartoons are bad for the youth of today because Scooby - doo has no courage and that teaches the youth to run away from their problems like the dog does."

"Chocolate is bad for you because some people get addicted to it, therefore, it's bad for everyone."

You get the idea  :P

There was a scandal in my country(Portugal) about a 15 year girl, 10 grade, who assaulted her teacher over a mobile phone.

She was, apparently using it during class and the teacher confiscated it. The girl starts screaming and hitting her and bleh.

I saw it on the news. Some dude on the news, a shrink I think, was saying how games(like GTA - he mentioned that) instil negative patterns on the child's brain(15 years old..?) making the child agressive.

I gotta tell you, man.

WEIRD.

I've been playing and watching violent games all my life and I haven't even punched anyone.

Am I a failure?  :-\

It's complete BS. I play the most violent game there are and I'm not violent in the slightest. My brother meanwhile prefers games like Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing and he is a far more aggressive person and gets into fights often.

It will change in due time, back when television was just coming out, people blamed that on the problems of the times youth. Right now, its about the video games. Who knows what will be the new thing to blame?

Every form of media, from books to videos, were at one time associated with violence and the times youth.

So you need not worry.

I'm gettin' bloody sick of tha noobz sayin' lies 'bout dem games makin' us angry like HULK!

... Er.. uh.. (Smacks himself in the head, violently, because he played a game) Type right IDIOT!
It is exceedingly irksome the way those journalists and cranky people try to blame games for violence. Been gaming since before I could read, and I learned to read very young, can't even remember not being able to read. And I can tell it's only made me a better person, it taught me there is more to life than money and.. that other thing people obsess over.

The violent people are the people who suck too much to win at games so they hurt people or try to get them taken away from the people with thumb and finger skills, that's what I think (sometimes, but not always. I've got a brain with lots of angles).

Thank you, and good night.

There is actually a bit of research out there that I heard in which studied male gamers and found that a certain amount of violent computer gaming is normal and that those that didn't play the games were more likely to have social problems, violent outbursts and etc..   The study theorized and recommended more research and wondered if a contributing factor is that the games served as an outlet for pent up aggression which would then reduce anti-social and violent behaviour generally.   Just like with movies, I say this with a footnote that parents should be careful that their kids do play games that are developmentally appropriate.  (No grand theft auto for the 8 year olds please)

And still, if you have someone who spends 7-9 hours a day exclusively playing VERY violent games (GTA, just as an example) AND is failing school, aggressive, and not socializing with people in real life, then you may have a problem. But otherwise...I doubt they have much of an influence on the mind of someone who can differentiate between reality and a game.

Video games can be a form of brainwashing to lean a person towards specific tendencies... but so can crack cocaine.  Mama always said that too much of a good thing is a bad thing.  When I used to be frustrated when I had to go to sleep because it stood between me and Everquest, video games were bad.  But most of the time, they were simply replacement for the TV or playing outside.  They were entertainment.

Some people are just more succeptable than others and video games have reached way more people than the raver at the club scene or the junkie in the alley.  And all ages are affected.  If you grew up with Gears of War or Halo, violence isn't that far fetched to you.  But if you grew up playing kickball and rummaging around in a sandbox, THEN playing GoW and Halo, then it's... a game.  Real life was playing whiffle ball and riding your bike.

I caught on to video games well after I had developed a sense of right and wrong.  I knew my excessive gaming was bad.  I still do!  But if you're 3 years old and you know more about GTA3's game map than you know about your own yard, then you're gonna grow up more prone to violence and a reclusive lifestyle.  Maybe you'll grow out of it, but maybe you'll become a serial killer.  Video games can now be blamed just like drugs or your uncle touching you as a child.  Gotta blame it on something and divert the attention away from the fact the mommy and daddy bought you an M rated game to shut you up because your next door neighbor had the game and his parents were cool.

Parents are the problem, not drugs, not video games, not porn.  Temptation will always be there.  It's up to parents to teach their children from day one what's right and wrong.  At least then, little Timmy will think twice before handing me his broken PS2 across the counter and telling me his favorite part about GTA3 is killing hookers.

I've always thought that the violence in videogames are kind of relaxing. Don't look at me like that, as I'll explain.

Whenever I get ticked, booting up GTA3:SA really helps, as releasing my anger on fictional people who don't actually exist is a lot better than hurting people in real life. Plus I get to be invincible with an Uzi, so it makes me feel kinda important. :P

...

...

... What? Stop looking at me like that. >.>;

I think that's part of the reason thos games are made.  To do stuff you couldn't ever do in real life without winding up dead or in jail.  But you know it's relaxing for you and you know it's fake.  You know you'd never do these things outside of the game.

That's the difference.  If you reality is video games, the line gets blurred between real life and video game life.  Perception of reailty is what's flexible.

I believe it's not only games, but the media altogether.
Seriously, you can't turn the tv on without getting commercials about movies in which people are shooting each other, can't watch the news without hearing the words 'murder', 'crime' and 'dead/death'.
Of course, movies are fake but they still leave their mark if you can't handle such stuff.
I am a person who always 'lives' in the movie I'm watching, I just tend to try to feel how the characters in a movie feel. Some movies however, you do NOT want to have that.
Hostel is a good example for that, I almost threw up and after 2 years, still have nightmares that even though they're not directly related to the movie, still haunt me at night. Not only because of the horrible images, but also because I started thinking about the torturers, their motives, their sickness.
Why did I watch it? I was playing WoW in my sister's room while she was watching that movie :/
I know that people are not agreeing with me on this, but the constant confrontation with pain and death is not good for a person.

Now that I've posted this, I was wondering, does anyone else have compareable things?

Hmm... Let me see...

Dead or Alive, Resident Evil, Tenchu, DinoCrisis, Silent Hill, Syphon Filter, Bloody Roar, Counter Strike, Red Alert (including one of the old ones where units who die turn into puddles of blood.), Battle Realms, Warcraft 3, Xenosaga, Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry, Way of the Samurai, Sword of the Samurai, Fireblade...

Did I end up being a school bully? Did I grow up to be a stalker? Did I grow up to be a serial killer? Did I grow up to be a terrorist?

No.

In fact, I got the motivation to stand up for myself against jerks at school.
