Botanical Spore: Sentient Plants
« on: March 22, 2005, 12:24:17 am »
Hi everyspores.

I've been lurking around here for a couple of days absorbing all the Spore news I can, information leech that I am. It's a great place you've got going on here so I thought I'd join in the fun. If you don't mind that is ;)

Now, I know I've posted this in the Spore forum so i'd better say something about that hadn't I.

I was going through all the different sorts of creatures I might like to try out when I (finally) get the game and while going through the list of basic types I came across something nobody else seems to have mentioned.

There was: mammal, reptile, flying, avian, fish, aquatic etc. etc....BOTANICAL!!! I think I'd like to make a TRIFFID!!!

Maybe we could have sentient plantlife wandering around the galaxy! If anyone has read John Wyndam's (sp?) Day of the Triffids you'll know what I'm talking about. What do you think? It's definitely a possibility but you'd need an entirely different set of parameters for making an intelligent cactus or whatever.

Would you have to start off as a bacterium rather than protozoa? Maybe a single celled fungus? That'd relly give proper meaning to the name Spore :)

Anyone else feel like making a thinking veggie?

Thats a great idea I was thinking about that myself.  I don't think its going to be in the game though.  Having smart plantlife would be weird let alone the evolution process of just being there waiting to grow,

I roffled. ;)

Well, nothing indicates you couldn't make the creature look like a plant, though I doubt the game will make much of a distinction between Animal-, Plant- and Mushroom-based creatures.

Hmmm. Now I want to create a "Mycon" creature. Juffo-Wup must spread! :D

I beleive he said, and it would make sense, that you can make plants. However intelligent plants? My gues would be that you'll be making your creature an animal, and later on you can also make plants, maybe with the UFO or something, I don't think you'll be able to play the game as a plant species, just make em. Though, talking veggies would be funny. ^_^

Flaming Carrot image forever saved to my harddrive. Thanks Steve! ;)

I've been wondering about player-created plant life ever since I've heard mention of it. It always seemed like it'd be amazingly boring to spend time in the editor making trees so other players can see a bit of variety as they travel from planet to planet. Now, trees that'll gobble you up if you walk too close, and bushes that can hunt in packs and entangle their prey... me likey. ;D

I wouldn't think it was possible, but I'm probably wrong. What would the final stage of evolution be for a plant creature, and wouldn't it make no sense whatsoever to see plants building cities :P?

What if the buildings just looked like giant trees or something? Makes me wonder if there's a 'branch' tool in the structure builder.

I could imagine some waddling moulds or hopping fungi living in a giant log. With a fireplace. And cable.

[edit]ohh, just thought of vine snakes! A big long vine grbbing things with shoots and slithering around! It could live on the side of a shed![/edit]

What's the difference between plants an animals anyways other than the insides? Simple, what they eat. I'm not sure how a plant-creature would evolve since plants only need sunlight, soil, and water to survive, but I can't see a problem with makin g"Photosynthetic" another one of those special abilities we all love.

I honestly don't think Photosynthesis will be an option, but like it was said earlier, you can at the very least make them look like plants. Now, the idea of an Oddish ravinously eating a small Yeller Deller is in my head....
Mummy, why am I short and cuboid shaped? Is it a result of millions of years of evolution which have taught us that this is the best shape for survival.

I honestly don't think 'special ability' will be an option. I think they'll concentrate entirely on simple biomechanical simulation. No photosynthesis, no flying, no invisibility, no psychic powers. Just legs and arms and beaks.

I'm inclined to agree with Craig

I'm kind of with craig here too. I don't remember any mention of special abilities anywhere. I think the idea is to stay grounded to our own planet's evolutionary cycle, and not be all paranormal or extra-sensory with psychic powers and invisibility. Of course, if this is the case it really limits creativity but, at least for now, I kind of like it this way. I think, if anything else, this is the kind of thing we can see in an expansion pack, as I don't think it fits the scope of what we know right now.
