1st of all, a demo and a beta are 2 compleatly difrent things, dont get them mixed up, i have closed beta tested many things,
Quote
The demo is pretty much a crappy version of the beta.
The beta is almost never the final version.
-Tarious, no, no no no no, beta is the almost final version with some small bugs still in it, so YES, beta is almost final version,
Quote
You don't put everything in a beta or people would get bored of the game possible.
-Tarious
wow, Tarious you seem to know nothing about betas, but you sure love to talk about them, dont you?, the idea is to put everything in the beta, so you can TEST every thing, thats the whole point of beta testing, if you didnt incluse everything, allthe stuff you didnt include could be mega buggy and mess up the game,
Quote
There's also the question of what to include in the demo.
-. . . also Tarious,
for a demo you want to put just enough stuff to make them want more, i renember playing my skys of arcadia demo for dreamcast,(the demo was in japaneese) but i played the demo like 5-6 times and loved it and wanted more, so when the game came out, i beat it for dreamcast 4 times, then bought it for gamecube, it said something like 20 hours new content, thats a lie, there was like 1 or 2, but i still beat it 3-4 times, that is THE best rpg game EVER MADE, you guys should all go out and buy it, right now,

Oof, no holds barred there, eh Clayface?

I think Spore should go Beta, if for no other reason but to generate creatures for the game disc.
Mummy, why am I short and cuboid shaped? Is it a result of millions of years of evolution which have taught us that this is the best shape for survival.

yea i know what you mean, thats a really good idea, but i think with all this popularity, they should make a closed beta that you have to pay for, people like this game so much that they whould pay to beta,

Ouch!

Umm. Moving on...kushinagi, I agree entirely, the perfect excuse to get a beta going!

As to charging for it I'd say no, but it'd have to be ultra secret.

clayface- you need to separate fact from fiction.

Gaming Steve said it looked nearly done.  He also said the sims game looked nearly done1-2 years before its release.  That was not an official statement but one from a casual observer... who admitted to having the same perception before and the game didn't release for a long time after.
I survived the flood of 2008 and all I got was this crappy homelessness.

Remember, a gaming being "done" means different things to different people. The game looked done in the sense that it was a fully playable in different stages rather than just a tech demo of one specific area (which is what I see 99% of the time at these sort of things). At GDC and E3 there are basically three different "types" of demos you will see:

1) Demos of one specific area or level of a game. These usually look very good and very "complete" but are nothing more than looking at a model home. It looks awesome, but nothing really "works" in the true gaming sense (i.e. the game balance, the graphic engine, the mutliplayer, etc.). You usually see these when a game has just started development (i.e. we all saw the original Doom level demo years before it was complete). When you see a demo of this type the game has either just started development.

2) Demos of many areas and technologies within the game. This are a lot less rare to see because these sorts of demos aren't complete and have so many "placeholder" graphics and sounds that they come across looking incomplete and not polished (which they aren't). Even though technically the game might be further along then the demo mentioned above, these don't look as good becuase the content hasn't been placed into the game. But games at this stage can be much further along than you think. When I was playtesting Warcraft III they managed to get all the single-player campaigns programmed and into the game just a few months before release. So the game was 100% complete just a few months before release, but there were no levels or content in the game, so it didn't play that great (except for multiplayer). This is where I would say Spore is at, this stage. So the game could be just a few months away from being complete (i.e. the engine is complete and all they need to do is add polish and additional content) or it can be years away (i.e. The Sims 2 which I believe was delayed for financial reasons and not technical).

3) Demo of the complete game or a game in final beta. Any game being released a few months after E3 is usually in this stage. Spore was not in this stage, but it did appear that it could be close.

Again, it is hard to say. I would think that this is going to be a huge game for EA and they are going to try to make as much money as possible during the release and expansion packs a la The Sims. Hence, two things will need to happen. First, the game will need to be finished. Second, EA will have to decide when they want to release the game which will best help their bottom line. Many many games are 100% complete and held over for months if not a year (i.e. Jade Empire) in order to make the most money possible for the publisher. So ... who knows? But seeing the game as a "Stage 2" demo rather than a "Stage 1" demo is a very good sign at least.

You said in a previous post that EA is currently running a bit low
and in the podcast instead of "only" making 3.3 bil they're making 3.1 bil.

If maxis finished Spore in the next 5 months, do you think EA would release it soon after?

It is very hard to say. One thing to keep in mind is that if EA believes that The Sims 2 and the Spore audiences are the same people then we might have a very long wait. Because The Sims 2 product lifecycle just started a few months ago if they release Spore so soon after The Sims 2 Spore sales might cannibalize Sims 2 expansion pack sales. So that is not good news.

On the other hand, if they continue to have problems meeting the market's earning expectations (they need to continue to grow revenues year after year ... no matter what) and they think Spore can fill a hole in their earnings, then it will be released sooner. Very hard to say, but EA has a long history of announcing games and then releasing them just months later (i.e. Def Jam: Fight for NY, Marvel Nemesis: The Imperfects). We will see...
