Starship Troopers 3
« on: March 11, 2008, 12:48:00 pm »
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0844760/

T'Pol goes bug hunting.

The war against the Bugs continues! A Federation Starship crash-lands on the distant Alien planet OM-1, stranding beloved leader Sky Marshal Anoke and several others, including comely but tough pilot Lola Beck. It's up to Colonel/General Johnny Rico, reluctant hero of the original Bug Invasion on Planet P, to lead a team of Troopers on a daring rescue mission.

If only they would do the book. Sigh.

didn't even took the time to see the second one. :-\

and yeah, why did they made the bugs mindless killing machines instead of making them sentient like in the books?

Good riddance... did the second one even make money? Sometimes I think Hollywood produces sequels just for the hell of it. I haven't even seen the second one and I don't think I ever will but the first one is one of my all-time favorites, and I have read the book. If more people would just see the movie for what it is...A great satire of American action with special effects that actually look photo-real and a wicked sense of humour. Meanwhile movies like Rambo which are totally serious in their fascism score 7.7 on IMDb.  :(

I still stand by the fact the 1st sucked for the sole reason of all the female characters in the movie got their shirts off except the hottest one in it. Other than that mindless action and an army of idiot ball carrying solders bring on.

Aye the second one was supremely horrible, I would have rather bathed in my own urine than watch it again (That is how bad it was). The first one was OK, I liked how cheesey it was I guess in a way its like watching Westernized Asian Movies.

This is gonna suck.

The first one was a fun action flick, no brain required. Haven't seen the second but people say it is horrid.

The third. Let's not talk too much about it.

I'm guessing you are referring to Denise Richards. Just so ya know, on the DVD in one of the deleted scenes, she's wearing a see through bra.

The main thing I noticed about the first film is when they first land on the planet, and one guy dies, and then they're all like "Run awaaaaaay!". :-\

I always wondered why they sent in ground pounders instead of just nuking the bejesus out of the planet from orbit, are they hoping to recover whatever resources could be found on that (if memory serves) desert world?  If they're one and only objective is to kill the bugs, why don't they just nuke the whole planet?

Once again, because everyone in the first movie is a retard.

When making the film they decided that they should throw the following things out the window:
The book (and the tactics and ideas it offers)
Tactics
Strategy
Common sense

There are so many problems with the movie it isn't even funny. Besides the ones already mentioned, there is also the fact that the fleet, despite the fact that they know they can't avoid the plasma attacks from the bugs, decide to gather in one large group, basically making escape impossible.

Why? What was wrong with the first film, provided you take it as it was, a film that had its tongue planted firmly in its cheek?

By the way, people who compare it to the book automatically lose all rights to comment.

Of course, if you judge the movie on its merits  then it is a fun action flick with a lot of tongue in cheek humor, provided you turn of your brain before you watch it.

By the way, people who compare it to the book automatically lose all rights to comment.

Why? Is it that unreasonable that people expected a somewhat faithful version of the book? Imagine reading the book, loving it and then hearing that there is a movie. Of course you get excited, but then you actually see the movie and discover the only real thing they have in common is sci fi and bugs.

Actually, if you judge the movie on its merits, it doesn't exist.

There was nothing good about Starship Troopers when I saw it. Maybe it was a different film when you were watching it?

The first one wasn't half bad, it did have some of the things that the book had, like the government ruthlessly exploiting the patriotism of their young population and the use of propaganda.
The second one seemed like it had three directors fiercely competing against each other, one wanted to do an action flick, one a soft-core porn movie and the last one wanted to do a really bad knock-off of invasion of the body snatchers. After much feuding they then realized that they'd actually been told to make a movie that at least had some semblance to the first so they bolted on a completely obvious message at the end.

No just got a brief summary from a friend, so I'll admit I may be speaking out of turn, but compared to the second the first is a glowing beacon of good movies.

My biggest dissappointment with the movie was that they took out the powered armor, and didn't even mention the skinnies. The CGI cartoon is actually closer to the book.

No just got a brief summary from a friend, so I'll admit I may be speaking out of turn, but compared to the second the first is a glowing beacon of good movies.

The book was written in the 1950's and was actually a very good snapshot of the world in many respects from the 1960s to today. The basic premis of the government was that 'if you wanted to vote, you needed to work for the government at some point first'. The easiest and shortest route to do that was through military service. The book chronicals the enlistment and combat record of the main character and the two different war fronts he fought on. Anybody joining or thinking of joining the military should read this book. I read it during basic training in the Army and was laughing at the comparisions.

Casper Van Dien is back in it... so it might actually feel like a Starship Troopers film.  Hope it lives up to the first one... although I doubt it will.

Just finished watching this(EDIT: Since it doesn't come out until Aug 5th, um... I guess this is a preview (cough) ), and it didn't totally suck. Felt more like Robocop 2 really, but what the hell.

Casper Van Dien and Jolene Blalock are the only two good actors in the movie... actually Blalock impressed me (and no she isn't naked in this movie), she plays a Starship Captain and actually pulls it off well. It'll be worth a rental if you enjoyed the first one (like Die Hard 2, just pretend the second Starship Troopers movie never existed).

Spoliers, well they might be for some:
The government is far more oppresive, becoming a focal point in the plot line, so they strayed farther from the books.
Power armor (Marauder) does make an appearance, not bad but you can tell the budget was thinning out.
One bit that is funny to watch is the desert scenes... as they progress Blalock looks like she really has been doing something rugged while the other female 'Holly' (Marnette Patterson) looks like she just walked on to the set from her trailer.

Below is a general outline of the movie:

The war is still going on. Rico is now a colonel. The war has spread and the local planets that have been invaded are blaming the terran government for causing the war to spread (sub plot of Federation crackdown against rebelling citizens inserted here). The Sky Marshall, who is also a pop singer, gets caught in a firefight on a bug planet, escapes, then crash lands on another planet. High Command wants the Sky Marshall dead for reasons that are later explained, but a General and friend of Rico's (and boyfriend to Blalock, who crashed with the Sky Marshall) coordinates an rescue mission with a handful of Marauders (power-suits). Would you like to know more?

At least that plot sounds better than the horror/Aliens crap that was going on in the second one. I gotta say though, Casper Van Dien back in doesn't really matter. His inclusion in no.1 was because of his ridiculous Amurican looks and his ability to stare really angrily. Now if Verhoeven came back, or the SFX people...

The movies are parodies of the book, that's obvious. In the book, the Bugs were intelligent and brutal and the soldiers were armed to the teeth and the entire plot was very grim. The entire government > people thing made sense back in the 50s, when the memory of the war was still fresh in memory. The battles echoed back to the battles in the Pacific, such as Iwo Jima.

I didnt read through the entire thread, just so you know.

First Starship troopers movie is brilliant, just a masterpiece. Second one was a disgrace.

Third one, even though it was made in the same style as the first one is not only written badly but has some of the worst actors you can find. If I went down the street and took the first person I could find, man, woman, child, dog to star as the role of rico, he she or it would perform better.

Thats just my opinion.
