The best educational game you've ever played?
« on: March 09, 2008, 02:17:58 pm »
http://www.classzone.com/books/geometry/game/ch08.htm

That would have to be mine. It's so friggin' great it just might be my favorite game ever.

This thread was meant for the discussion of educational games, AKA edutainment games.

But seriously, what do you think of Frog Swamp?

That was a fun game, if I remember correctly. With the goo people or something? A robot got lost and captured..or...*struggles to remember the plot*.

A prison planet was in there...

Ahhhh Math Blaster... I was in, like, third grade when I first played Math Blasters. It was the seventh version or something.

MB was ok, but ZB was way better. Another good one was Oregan Trail.

Math Blaster.

Indeed.

Zoombinis was by far the best though. Hell, on the hardest difficulty most of those puzzles would be impossible for an adult to finish, let alone a kid.

Jump Start 2nd Grade was my favorite, it really helped me with multiplication at home.

There was this educational Muppet game that everyone loved in like 4th grade at my school, that was a great game (Though I can't remember the name of it).

Oregon Trail obviously holds a special place for me.

And Bit Bot's Math Voyage. You play as a robot in a sunken submarine, and you interact with all these animals in math problems to get coins in order to buy upgrades for your aquarium. Does anyone know where I can find it?

Yeah. I had it, but the sound didn't work, so I had no idea what to do.

And with zoombinis..heh, I remember the pizza people. My least favorite stage was the one with the mine cart, since that was just identification. The one with bubbles where they floated across a chasm was fun....and there was one with faces on a cliff and a bridge and little pegs that came out. And then there was the one with collapsing rock...

I remember Jump Start Kindegarten being fun, but the best educational game I've played is Zap!. You get to play around with electricity, sound and light, but electricity was by far the best part of the game.

Sim City 2000 and Civilization II

I don't care what any of you say, these two games are educational, if only for the fact that they spark an interest in the subject.  I today am fascinated with history, and I believe I owe this spark of curiosity due to playing Civilization II for ungodly amounts of time.

Oh, and Oregon trail.

Civilization is an has a ton of educational value without a doubt.

But i have to pick sim ant why?.

When i first got it for the snes i was very young and couldn't understand how to play. My parents read the tutorial for me but i still could not figure it out. I was determined to play so i taught myself how to read using the games instruction booklet.  ..god i feel old that was so long ago..

I'm surprised these haven't come up, but I extremely enjoyed Oregon Trail 3 and The Incredible Machine.

Oregon Trail 3 was very intuitive and all sorts of fun from hunting from a first person perspective to reading guide book entries on all sorts of in-game topics to help you out. I found it amazingly amusing to rub salt into every wound my group sustained along the way for some reason.

The Incredible Machine was a favorite for obvious reasons. Make a complex Rube Goldberg style machine to complete a simple task all while learning basic physics? Fun times indeed.

Pharaoh

That game is one of the best city-building games ever made AND it taught me every aspect about Egyptian history and culture.

Well, if u really think about it most games have some educational value... so out of every game I consider to be somewhat educational (and not wargames..) I would have to say that simcity 2000 or simtower would be the best.

As for something a bit more education based...
I'm going to have to go with oregon trail 3.... or maybe outpost....

Oregon trail 3 was very educational and had great replay value, outpost was incredibly fun and kind of educational (it actually makes me think of oregon trail combined with simcity for some odd reason...)

Dr. Brain

I loved that game as a kid. It had a wonderfully versatile set of games that tested things like memory, pattern recognition, sequencing, chemistry and others. The only section that was a little hard and unfun was the sheet-music part where you had to assemble groups of notes to match specific melodies.

"The Incredible Machine 2" would be a very close runner-up.
