What option would lead to taking a step towards our children developing faster? I'm figuring that while egg-guarding is good, and fixes this problem very well (better than my choice) having our children develope faster has far-reaching benefits. Our population will bounce back faster after catastrophe, our kids will be able to feed themselves faster, later on when we become sapient of kids will be whiny for a shorter period of time, and egg hunters will have less time to hunt our eggs.

The actual physical development of the young can't really be helped, since the more complex the organism the longer it will take - but you can have the young reach sexual maturity at a younger age. That'd be develop defences.
