You Decide: Greatest Solo of All Time
« on: March 07, 2008, 05:22:30 pm »
well anyway ive seen this done before in some other forum. whats gonna happen is that everybody nominates UP TO 5 of their favorite solos until there are 64 solos. then the nominated solos will be put randomly into a ladder. every 3 days there will be a vote between 2 competed solos to move on to the next round. this continues until there are only 2 solos left and then the greatest solo of all time will be decided.

the solos can by any instrument (not vocal solos) and can be from any type of music. the solo can last anywhere from 3 seconds to 20 mins. if a song has more than 1 solo (november rain) you have to pick which one (1st 2nd...6th).

if this fails, oh well, wasnt expecting much with topics such as "Nirvana" and "Greenday"  ;)

my nominees are
Dread and The Fugitive Mind - Megadeth (Al Pitrelli, Dave Mustaine)
Achilles Last Stand - Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page)
Rock Bottom - UFO (Michael Schenker)
Maggot Brain - Funkadelic (.. Hazel?)
Tornado of Souls - Megadeth (Marty Friedman)

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (outro solo) - (David Gilmour)
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven - (Jimmy Page)
Dragonforce - Through the Fire and the Flames  - (Herman Li and Sam Totman)
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody - (Brian May)
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing - (Mark Knopfler)

When voting commences, you must create mp3 clips of the solos for us to listen to so we can decide. Or I can do that, or whatever.

Live versions should also be considered.

EDIT: Nice call on Dread and the Fugitive Mind.

Hotel California - The Eagles (Outro)
(Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Öyster Cult

Well, that's two that you just can't afford to leave out. I'll decide on a few more yet... Come to think of it, how much of Misirlou counts as solo?

EDIT: Why didn't I think of Buck's Boogie sooner? I'm ashamed of myself.

Here's my 5 nominees...

Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name - (http://youtube.com/watch?v=MJDdJoBTwYE - from about 4:10 to the very bitter end)
Free Bird - Lyrnard Skyrnard - (the second part where they finally stop singing)
Rainbow - Stargazer - (http://youtube.com/watch?v=xnyoy2w9atg - from about 3:30 to 5:00)
Megadeth - Trust - (http://youtube.com/watch?v=61VSkYLragA - from about 2:30 to about 3:40)

I'll put a fifth one up later...probably something by Jimi Hendrix.

gracias amigo...do you have any picks?

Oh and my last pick is Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath. The intro riff and the solo near the end are some of the best notes I ever heard...(http://youtube.com/watch?v=ok7kA9CkNVE&feature=related)

Yeah, the accompanying slide show is pretty stupid...but it's the only thing I could find with studio version of the song in the background.
