Internet Hangups
« on: March 07, 2008, 01:43:37 pm »
For the past week, i've been having some pretty annoying internet hang-ups. It seems to be worse when I'm logged into sites (ie sites where i have a username and password). It seems like the browser works for a second, goes from stopped to working over and over again really fast, then it just goes to stopped. I have firefox and I'm using wireless internet with a Linksys WRT54G router and have Road Runner as my ISP.

I have no idea where to look, or what other kind of info to give. ???

Have you done the usual spyware check?

Yeah, I've run Ad-Aware, all it found was cookies. The weird thing is, when it gets hung up, if I close all of the windows I have up and restart firefox and plug in the same URL, it works great for another few minutes.

I know it's not firefox since IE does the same thing too.

Ad Aware doesn't get them all, try SpyBot Search and Destroy too. I have to run both sometimes. If your wireless, it could also be signal strength. You could try clearing your cache too.

I imagine it's an issue with wireless, given that it seems to be somewhat stop-start. Are any other programs having this issue when you connect them to the 'net?

I place my laptop on my chainmail, which is a pretty good antenna. Probably not quite practical in your case, though.

I use a wireless laptop all the time and I don't have that problem. The only time I've had an issue was with spyware bogging it down or weak signals. It might good to see how many things are using your wireless, is it secure? Someone could be stealing borrowing your internet signal ;)

Alright i think I made it better.

I just redid the old "Firefox on steroids" post that Steve made a while ago. With all the updating the settings went back to default and seemed reeeeeaaalllly slow.

Thanks to everyone who replied! :)

Instead of editing the settings as described in that "Firefox on Steroids"-post, you could install the addon Faster Fox (Mozilla.org link), which does exactly the same, and I think even more, to speed Firefox up, but it's a lot easier to use.

Just ran AVG, it found and fixed 466 things that it considered threats :o

I installed fasterfox, that seems to help too. The problem should be completely over now.

It turns out the last time I "fixed" it, it would still hang up on some of the websites. I guess I'll see for sure now... Thanks for everyone's help

EDIT: Turns out it will still hang up if I try to load two webpages at once. Bah, I give up...

whoah, i thought this thread was going about people who hang themselves because of something happens on the internet. Like in an mmorpg or something.

huge disapointment.
