Here's a brief article with Spore's producer, Thomas Vu, where he briefly mentions "making the rest of it at some point", and says they've done 1% of what they can possibly do with Spore. At the end he even says Maxis has already started working on new ideas and prototypes of that content. As long as the initial launch is a success, I'd imagine expansions are pretty much guaranteed.

I'm wondering what the first several expansions will focus on, expanding to different types of galaxies or smaller things.

Possible expensions:

Flying (not the flying that has a limit and all, just really bird like if you know what I mean)
Underwater phase (and swimming, if not in the game already)
Story like expansions.
More parts and all.
More diversity (Instead of making a nest with eggs, giving birth to your creatures directly)
More dynamic evolution of AI controlled creatures.
More editors (planet editor, Galaxy 'map' like editor, flora editor)
More equipable weapons.
More important religion.
Mounts and pets.

The amount of possible ideas are limitless :P
They're not all as good as the other, but hey, like all sims expansions are great :P

It is like a MMO as Will Wright says, massively single player.
They could create new story archs, evil empires to overthrow, ally with and whatnot. :D

In the DICE interviews Will said that only about 10% of the ideas they had for the game got programmed into prototypes.  And of all those prototypes, only 10% were going to be put in the final game.  That's your 1%.  In the Nasa video Will mentioned a number like 200 prototypes and 10 being used.   Going by that number, they had around 1800 more ideas that never even got prototyped.  But they still have 190 prototypes of the better ideas already coded and still lying around.  So, given that they still have all those prototypes, there is a big chance to make some expansions using work that has already been done, ala underwater.

It's an understatement I'm buying this game, preordering as soon as I can, and even buying the special edition. I'm also willing to pay for 3d printouts of my creature(s), and if the game is 50% of what I expect, I'll be getting every expansion set they release. And note that I only buy 1 or 2 games every year, with this game, I don't mind... it's so great :)

I'd be happy to buy expansion packs with story archs alone. With each story/quest/mission line ending with a reward.
Could say go through an entire epic storyline. Say like the Star Wars saga. Or have huuuuge tribal battles.

they want to use the technology to do different things not just to simple pimp out expansion packs and add ons for spore. They will be developing completely new games based on this procedural generation technology

Creating your own enemies in fps's.
Create your own character (in-depth)

I personally would like to see 'real' water in games first. I've always loved digging holes and watching water go through that.
I forgot what the name of the game was, it was a fps where certain weapons made holes in the ground.
You could dig far enough to make a trench, getting the water to lower and flow in your trench.
The game was really old, but I loved digging :D :P

i guess the fps you thought about was red faction ^^

and speaking of prototypes..
i believe that was just something like the build versions of the game - trying to get the basics actually work, instead of thousands of ideas lying around. remember the video where they said they toy'd around with different ideas like the birth of a star and so on and then decided that it would be to hard/complex and all the stuff.
so i dont think, its "possible" that they're trying implement a couple of ideas they had earlier, so i wouldnt say somthing like "yay,  new galaxies" n stuff and  more important: just lets see how good it sells after launch. (before it ends up like blacknwhite)

Nope, it wasn't that. You were stranded on some kind of alien planet or something, I think the game was released between 1994-1997, it didn't look really well and I only had a demo of it :P

Ehhh... I think I threw up a little.

The prospect of an infinite number of expansions reminiscent of The Sims is enough to make me want to hurl a sack of flaming crap at their offices. Don't get me wrong, sometimes expansions are good and sometimes they are excessive and unnecessary. And sometimes when you repackage an expansion with slightly better graphics and slap a number two after the title it is insanity.

I say bring on all of the expansions.  I loved every last one for The Sims and The Sims 2.  They obviously sell well, or Maxis wouldn't be making them.
