How far is the world editor going to go?
« on: August 27, 2005, 08:35:24 pm »
A world editor is something I have been looking into a lot lately only for one reason, to remake Halo. I know there is going to be a world editor in Spore, but will it allow me to modify a world so much that I can create a ringworld? I have only really found that the world editor, of course, will let you shape the land with mountains, plains, and everything that there is in landscaping, but will it be possible to take this to the extreme? I don't know this has been asked yet or not. I'm sure it has been talked about, but I want to know for sure.

Pretty sure there's a terraforming thread somewhere around here, try searching if you haven't already. Ring worlds have definately been discussed in the past along with a few other spectacular feats of terrestrial engineering.
There is a method to my madness. That method is in and of itself quite mad, but it is method nonetheless.

youll have to make home planets instead

For the purpose of where we'd seen it originally, I call that all references to "Remake Halo" are changed to "Remake Ringworld."
It's just breakin' my heart.

I have a bit of a problem with the term "remake" myself. I mean, it's not like you're redesigning it or something. Trying to make a better one? You want to make something that resembles it, a copy. So it should be something more along the lines of "Make a Ringworld."

Look at Steve's interview with Will Wright.
I am pretty sure that Will says no to dyson spheres and ringworlds...

Though it would be cool... :D

yes i think it was mentioned that you cant edit your world much if at all. And certainly i dont think you would be able to make a ringworld

It is an idea, kind of like a ringworld.
Take tons of raw material, and build a sphere around a star. Add something to hold you down to the surface + a way to hold down an atmosphere, and you have ...
1) completely blocked your sun from anyone.
2) have billions of square miles to live on.

Wikipedia it, it is cool!

I still like the idea of a sort of artificially manufactured rogue planet. Take some lifeless hunk of rock and terraform it, but build massive structures within capable of regulating temperature and atmosphere internally, eliminating the need for a sun and leaving it free to drift through space. Then again drifting would probably be a bad idea, what with the potential to collide with other celestial objects and all. Unless it also had propulsion units that could steer it clear of gravitational pull from stars and the orbits of other planets.
There is a method to my madness. That method is in and of itself quite mad, but it is method nonetheless.

whats a dyson sphere

Its a huge hollow sphere built around a star, people live on the inside surface and enjoy the benefits of a 'world' many million times the size of earth and capable of intercepting massive amounts of solar energy.

On the downside there's no nighttime and you need something to channell all the radiation (usually deflected by the Earth's Magnetic fields) coming from the sun away from the pupulace.

yeh....

not to be authorative, but for reasons of animation and stuff i doubt a dyson sphere is possible.
