Google Sketchup Showcase!
« on: December 30, 2007, 11:48:55 am »
Who doesn't love Google Sketchup? It's such an awesome tool, and free at that!  :) Here are some of my creations, show me yours!

House Block - the idea is to cram the houses as tight as possible together whilst giving each one a garden or an out-doors space.

My dream house, I've planned the interior.  :)

The House Block one was made through the course of many media classes, and the two other ones probably took a couple hours each.

I've been playing around with it a bit, with this as result:

It's a rather simple house, I know, but it wasn't that difficult to make, save for the camera getting annoying sometimes and the program carving blocks away when I didn't want it to.

ah yes, sketchup
one of the few programs i can fiddle around with without getting anywhere
I think I never saved a file in sketchup, i just created stuff, looked at it, thought: "cool stuff" and quit the program

The controls are too unprecise and long-winded though.
I'd be way faster creating something specific with Unigraphics NX4 than with SketchUp (except the texturing maybe)

anyway, nice work on those buildings

Very cool indeed :)

I use Revit Architecture at work, we briefly toyed with the idea of what program to use for 3D presentations etc, Sketch-up was one of the programs on the list.
Good Grief!

I can't use Sketch-up because I can't make anything do what I want. I guess that's what I get for using AutoCAD for three years.

Cool.

I have a doubt: If you are making, say, an empty house but you make a roof, you can't get inside and model furniture and stuff?

The way I got into my little house is to just zoom in on the wall with the mousewheel. If you keep zooming in long enough, you'll go through the wall, and be inside the house. Alternatively, you can position the camera besides the wall, and use the 'Orbit'-tool to rotate through the wall, either by clicking it in the toolbar, or holding down the mousewheel.
But I'm sure there's a better way, I'm new to SketchUp too :)

I'm taking Media Arts in grade 10 next year. Is there any chance I'll be learning how to use these programs without using trial and error, or is that not until the later grades?

I'm also taking Construction (woodworking) Visual Arts, and Food-And-Nutrition. I'm cheating by taking one of my required grade 10 courses this year, so I get 4 optionals instead of 3!  :D

A future concept I've been thinking about. Because every single patch of arable land will be utilized, cities need to be incredibly dense. A city from a distance would look lika a huge glittering wall. From the air, this is what you'd see. Large trenches cut into the city's megastructure, allowing light and air to more citizens. The huge platues created are used for public buildings, hospitals, parks and recreation. Of course, not everyone will be able to get a room with a window...

EDIT:

It's very similar to the city described in Foundation by Asimov. It's basically just a huge plane of a building with some extra towers sticking out and huge holes all around, covering the entire planet. So very similar to Huggruka's idea.
No way dude, you're trolling me.

A ship that drops from orbit, can walk around, deploy troops from front\bottom. The large guns on front work as engines as well to slow the descent. The whole front of the ship ( big guns, cockpit) revolve 360 degrees. Used in surprise first strikes. (starwars style)

This was (and is) a plan for a L4D map I was making and will continue once the SDK comes out:
DarkDragon's Minecraft Survival Server (use this as the IP):

gamingsteve.dyndns.org

- The server uses a whitelist, if you're not on the whitelist (can't connect), PM me your minecraft name.

Desklap!

You know, for breaking people's knees with.

Actually if the keyboard wasn't attached to it, sticking an LCD screen on the side of a desktop might be kind of neat. Saves desk space and you can actually reach the damn thing to turn it off/put a disk in.
Not a winner anymore.

I'm assuming he's making it to have the modifiability of a desktop and its power, and have the portability (somewhat) of a laptop.

I think it'd be like one of those huge laptops you're not really supposed to carry around... You know, you only ever move it when you need too.

I'll design a touchscreen version once I'm done with this one :D

Now, if you could only miniaturize the parts to make the portable desktop even more portable...maybe one day it would be light enough to have in...your...lap...

Suffice to say I love the idea!
