Moving to a new server, site will be down
« on: December 28, 2007, 10:05:34 pm »
Hey everyone, I'll be moving the entire site to a brand, new server Saturday night and I'll be shutting down the forums and server at approximately 10:00 PM, EST Saturday night. The entire move should take less than an hour and as quickly as the name servers are able to redirect the gamingsteve.com address the forums and site will be back up.

I don't imagine it will take more than a few hours to move the entire site and for it to be back up. So make your preparations for this downtime. Thanks for your understanding and the new server will be awesome (over ten times faster than the current one!)

How noticeable do you expect the difference to be on our end?

Saturday 10:00 PM EST, that's Sunday 3:00 AM GMT if I'm correct. That's 4:00 AM where I live, so it shouldn't be much of a problem for me, and most of the people on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Good luck with the move!

Not sure, but the new server is much faster with two processors instead of one and caching. Overall everything should be much much faster, but its hard to say for sure as the forum is already pretty fast.

But its small things that will make a difference. For example the current server can handle 200 simultaneous SQL calls at once, but the new one can handle 500 simultaneous SQL calls at once, and every single page in the forum consists of several SQL calls. Things like that will be affected.

So in the long run the server can handle more people and more traffic and not get any slower and be more stable overall. At least that's the plan!

Hmm. I've had no issues with the SPEED of the forum as such, it's only ever been being able to access the place sometimes - it'll sit on "waiting for gamingsteve.com" for ages, then act as if I tried to download a php file rather than view it. Also using Search tends to muck up a lot as well.

I'm having trouble editing my posts since the upgrade. It just stalls forever then doesn't go through.

I might be being impatient, but the "quick edit" button seems to be hanging up too.

Any form of editation. It just chokes up and doesn't go. Funny cos it worked earlier, now it's just stopped for some reason. Im not going to spam my graphics topic full of new posts to add icons.

Actually, I just found that it does work. It hangs up, but just wait it through until it says "Your post timed out." After that the edit should be made.

Actually the upgrade never happened. Long story short but the new server wasn't set up correctly. So we are currently still on the old server. I will try again next week to get this done. Very frustrating...

Ah, well I didn't want to be rude, but I found it strange I didn't notice a difference, really.
