New Way to Organize your Creature/Planet Information

I have a new way to classify creatures. Bear with me here, as the system was originally designed for RPGs and such. I've streamlined it down, removed a few things (psi ability for one) and added a few more to fit into the whole "Spore" theme.

Alien sheet:  [ Put Race's Name Here ]

(Section 1 -- Biology)
Type                 : (Enviroment, like Arborial or Aquatic. Values Below)
Appearance           : (Overall biology of the race. Values Below)
Gravity preferences  : # - # g (The range of gravity your race likes. If you don't know specifics, just put very low, low, standard, high, or very high)
Temperature pref.    : # to # °C (Like above, but with tempurature. If you don't know specifics, just put arctic, cool, standard, warm, desert)
Atmosphere breathed  : (Almost all of us will put "Nitrogen/Oxygen" here)
Body cover           : (Does yor race have scales? Feathers? Fur? Just plain old skin? Values Below)
Body color           : (Self explanatory)
Hair                 : (What kind of hair or hair-like structures does your race have? Values Below)
Hair color           : (Self explanatory)
Eyes                 : (How many and what kind of eyes does your race have? If your race's main sense is not vision, list what it is. Values Below)
Eyes color           : (Self explanatory)
Body characteristics : (Basicly anything that your race has that a human doesn't. Values Below)
Diet                 : (Carnivore? Herbivore? Omnivore? Mineralvore? Solar Powered? Direct Energy Intake?)

  Loyalty         : (0-20: The higher the value, the more the race trusts it's government)
  Social cohesion : (0-20: The higher the value, the more uniform the society)
  Art             : (0-20: The higher the value, the more value the race puts on art)
  Individualism   : (0-20: The higher the value, the more value the race puts on individual sucess)
  Body            : (0-?: A measure of the race's overall physical strength and stamina. Human average is 10)
  Mind            : (0-?: A measure of the race's overall intellegence and willpower. Human average is 10)
  Speed           : (0-?: A measure of the race's overall reaction time and running speed. Human average is 10)
  Lifespan        : # years (Average life expectancy (in Earth Years) of your race. If values differ between Male/Female, list both)

                       Artificial (This group includes all races whose minds consist of computer programs. They often have metallic bodies, and many have perfect memories. This group includes Wexxains and self-aware AI!)
                       Avian (This group includes all races who have feathers as their main body covering. They often have a beak or bill, and many are capable of winged flight. This group includes Mon-Krai!)
                       Humanoid (Not necisarily a bad thing, this group includes anthing that follows the general human body plan. Basicly, if it can be made to look human with a long cloak, a bit of cosmetic surgury, and maybe some gloves, it's a humanoid. If your race fits into this group, choose a second group that also applies to it.)
                       Insectoid (This group includes all races who have an exoskeleton. They often have multiple sets of limbs, and many have antennae or mandibles. This group includes Graid and Screebles!)
                       Mammalian (This group includes all races who have fur or hair of some sort. They often give birth to live young, and many are warm-blooded. This group includes Torpals and Kazea!)
                       Otherworld (This group includes all races that do not fit into any other category. This is a rather grab-bag group, consisting of the blobby, the colony creatures, the bizzare, and the technically impossible. This group includes the ViS and Halo's Hunters!)
                       Plant (This group includes all races who have their evolutionaly roots in stationary photosythesizers. They are often mobile, and many still photosynthesize. This group includes My Florauna and Oten!)
                       Reptavian (This group includes all races who have characteristics of both Avians and Reptillians. This group includes Halo's Jackals and Pterosaurs!)
                       Reptillian (This group includes all races who have scales as their primay body cover. They are often cold-blooded, and many lay eggs. This group includes Willosaurs and Kratiar!)
                       Reptomammal (This group includes all races that have characteristics of both Mammalians and Reptillians. My Noasaurs and Early Mammals!)

I kind of misnamed the thread. It's a way of organizing information, realy, and it can provide ideas for new races.

What's more interesting is when you can explain why your creatures have some of these characteristics in your more lengthy descriptions.

Yessiry!  And it made me a very happy camper.  I love seeing refference to my Kratair.  To me it truly signifies the Kratair's position as a prominent race in the second generation of Spore creatures here on GS.

If you want to. I made it so that you can put it in the first post of your thread to give an overview of your creature. You can then expand to your heart's content in the rest of the thread.

So yeah, pretty much what you said. :)

Its an awesome idea because it not only helps anyone else reading my thread but it helps myself as well because I typically find myself drifting off topic when I try to explain things about my creature so this way I can easily look at it step by step :)

By the way, this system was originally used in a program called Star Generator. I don't recomend it, though. It's buggy and a pain in the rear to use.

I think the section 1 variables are too earth-like. Also if you classify them like that then you instantly limit the creativity and will tend to make them with those earth-like qualities.

Understandable. Like I said, the system was originally designed for RPGs, so many of the variables were rather limited. I tried to expand it, but I'm not the greatest at these things.  :-\

The appearance classification system is based on one I use, but only with the categories that are possible in Spore. I also split a few of the larger categories up. As for limiting to Earthy qualities, I realy try to aim for the "Otherworld" group. Sometimes, though, I can't quite make it there and the race falls into another group. I'm sorry to say, but not everyone can come up with realy alien aliens (lol) most of the time. Most of the things on this forum fall into one or two of the categories I've outlined.

It might just be me but the lower parts of the culture section seme just too exagerated in my oppinoin.  The body I might be able to understand, but the mind?  They may not be stupid, but I severely doubt they're that smart while my Kratair, who are all about science and technology, only come in at a 50.

Jk. But, it IS kind of over-powered. It says you have extra jumping prowess, when you are a 17 foot tall turtle creature. SOmething THAT big, especially with that bi of a shell has no chance of jumping high. Or at all. All I'm saying is make it a BIT more realistic. :D

Body: 0 is incorporial, 10 is human, 100 is Atlas (You know, that dude in Greek myth that held up the world?)
Mind: 0 is non-sapient, 10 is human, 100 is Q and other Uber-beings.
Speed: 0 is stationary, 10 is human, 100 is instant teleportation/precognition.

Of course, this does highlight the flaw with a system like this (and why I think it's not been popular before). Any sort of quantification always leads to some people completely bypassing all rational thought and immediately making their creatures the most powerful they can think of.

The old RP standby of peer veto works quite well, I suppose. You're not going to stop fools having their fantasies but you can at least force people to be reasonable before allowing them to play.

Blargbell's Alien Sheet

(Section 1 -- Biology)
Type: Land-dwelling
Appearance: Cowbell-shaped, with four tentacles, one at each "corner."
Gravity preferences: Normal Earth Gravity, but is okay with higher if need be.
Temperature preferences: Tropical temperatures, but can survive at anywhere from slightly below freezing, to desert-like temperatures.
Atmosphere breathed: The Blargbells breathe in a gas that they create themselves, inside their own body.
Body cover: Moist, leathery skin with a very light covering of hair-like feathers.
Body color: Shades of yellow and gold.
Hair: Stiff, hair like feathers at the tips of tentacles, almost invisible softer hairs covering body.
Hair color: Black at the end of tentacles, multiple shades of gold an yellow everywhere else.
Eyes: A single green eye near top of body. Vision is slightly worse than human's and becuase there is only one, cannot tell distance. Its main sense is its sense of touch and hearing, which allow it to find things much better than it could with sight.
Eyes color: Bright green pupil, with very dark, swamp green for the rest of it.
Body characteristics: The Blargbell is almost completely different from a human in every aspect.
Diet: The Blargbell is mostly parasitic, but by using stomach acid it is able to digest things outside the body to suck back up later as a liquid, much like a fly.
Sexual reproduction: The Blargbell is asexual.
Reproduction method: The Blargbell reproduces at its own death. All throuch life it slowly lets out a type of gas that expands n contact with another gas that the Blargbell emits inside of a type of "badder" in its body. At death, the pores that normally let out the gas close automatically, and because the gas has nowhere to go, it explodes violently. This allows its spores to fly out, to be picked up by the wind. They will grow on rotting things (frequently its own parent's corpse) until another spore touches it. Then it will eventually grow up to be a young Blargbell.

Mass: 20 pounds on average.
Size: 0.5-1 meter tall.

Programming is like a powered-up version of Gmod. The usefulness of programs depends on how creative and skillful a particular creature is. An individual with a very low attention span and brain power will not be able to use the full potential of programming. On the other hand, a very skilled being can unleash the full strength of programming with only a moderate amount of effort. It's basically like FMA's "alchemy", only a lot harder to do.

Like alchemy, use of programs are not limited to Terran-Ixians, everyone can use them, given the fact that they possess substantial amounts of processing power. The ViS can probably perform programs, along with the other "brainy" races like Communicants. If a certain race isn't specially good at math stuff, they could always build massive computers to do it for them, TI's do it to.

Just wanna clear something up.

It's not that they're designed to overpower other critters. They're just like that. :) I mean, they are basically living breathing tanks. They shouldn't be compared to other types of creatures as humans shouldn't be compared to tanks. The closest one can compare with them to earth is this. In short they are not creature-creatures, they are warmech-creatures, designed for war. Who would make a critter designed for interplanetary genocidal war frail? Guns won't hurt them much because they're bullet-resistant. But of course, as with any tank/mech, a few anti-tank lasers will do them A LOT of damage.

I made a guide btw. I'll be posting other stuff on the guide too.

Wow DG, this is really awesome! From now on, this will be the standard for all of my creations... Provided I have the time. I'm thinking of moving to a 'Creature-of-the-Week' type of format like Hydro used to do, instead of really developing one specific race. I just have too many ideas; as soon as I start updating one of my races, I'll see something that gives me ideas for five other creatures, and I won't be able to take my mind off of them.

This might help with the stars.

It should be noted that a Sol-sized star cannot be blue or red or anything. The color depends on the star itself.

It's my thread and I'll necrobump it if I want to...

I've recently put more thought into the various Technology tiers, and their descrtiptions. Here's what I've got.

Tier 0: No obvious signs of sapience, but shows potential. Capable of learning and using basic tools. Primitive social structure with basic communication.
Tier 1: Invention of language, uses complex tools. Social structure more defined.
Tier 2: Non-nomadic civilization accomplished. Creation of structures as monuments or as shelter. Use of metallic tools. Development of agriculture. Invention of written language.
Tier 3: Use of primitive vehicles, roads, pack animals for transportation. Widespread use of written language. Highly develped government and a code of laws. Begins to use complex metallurgy techniques. Beginnings of complex mechanical structures.
Tier 4: Industrialization. Widespread litteracy, institutions of learning. Mass production of various commodities. Complex machinery and weaponry not powered by pack animals. Vehicles capable of traversing long distances.
Tier 5: Wireless communication, globalization. First steps into space. Race is starting to become dependent on technology. Death rate plummets. Nuclear power discovered.
Tier 6: First permanent extraterrestrial colony. Beginnings of efficient interplanetary spaceflight.
Tier 7: First permanent extrasolar colony. Near-light or ligt-speed travel invented.
Tier 8: FTL achieved. Rapid expansion of near stars.
Tier 9: Efficient FTL achieved. Empire/reasonable travel distance now more than a dot on the galactic map.
Tier 10: Potential to colonize entire galaxy. Almost any point on galactic map reachable within days.
Tier 11: Potential to colonize other galaxies. Time travel and/or true dimentional travel achieved. No race can stand against them and win. Total domination is a matter of the race's whim/

(I kept the requirements after Tier 5 vague since they have no equivalent in human history)


Also, it has occured to me that I never put up my insanely long list of questions in this thread. (a few people know what I'm talking about) If you guys want it, I can post it here. Beware, though, it's designed to poke into every nook and cranny of a creature's biology and culture, and thus is insanely long.

This series of questions is intended to force creators to think out a broad range of aspects for their creature, including biology and culture. It is suggested that you answer all the questions, but post the information in paragraph form in your actual creature thread.
