Aurix: Somarinoa's Main Creation
« on: October 15, 2007, 01:38:23 am »
I've been asked by a few people to make a GamingSteve account and post my main Spore creation, the
Aurix, here.

The Aurix is a game I run on GameFAQs, and is the oldest still-running game on there, with a year and a half of story. Certain aspects of this game are subject to some change still, as we have yet to leave the creature stage (although we are close). I'll let you all know when physical info is finally written in stone.

(When provoked)
+
Name: Aurix (Ovokentron ultravenator)
Homeplanet: Vuunega, a tropical water world about half the size of the Earth. Polar ice is small but existent.
Habitat: Deep Mangrove, a large mangrove swamp in the southern reaches of the Zeeon continent. Build colonies just offshore in shallow water, spend near-equal time on land and in the shallows.
Species Type: Cold blooded, egg laying reptilian. Body mass high enough to warm core.
Lifestyle: Social colonial predator -- males hunt in packs, females care for the colony. Entire colony led by an alpha male and female. Generally curious and shy but can attack viciously when provoked.
Size: Males are 5'7"-6'2" at the shoulder, Females are 5'3"-5'8" at the shoulder. Tail, when curled over the top of the body, doubles the total height of the individual.
Weight: Males are 800-1200lbs. Females are 750-950lbs. This large weight difference is due to males naturally possessing more muscle than females, as males are the hunters and guards of the colony.
Lifespan: ~20 years, 7 months
Diet: Carnivorous & Autotrophic: Feed on Grendons, Quirlax, and, annually, the occasional Whipscale, while using their Chlorolomba symbiotes to photosynthesize for extra energy.
Hunt/Forage Success Rate: 60% Hunt (80% success rate), 40% Photosynthesis (99.7% success rate during day, 5% success rate during night)
Method of Eating: Prey is grabbed with any or all of the four tentacle-arms, using split-tentacles on the primary set, and if needed, tentacle-claws on the secondary set to hold on. Certain prey is incapacitated by injecting them with cnidocytes that line the arms. Prey is brought to the split jaw mouth and large chunks of meat are torn off of prey. If a chunk is too large to immediately swallow, the Aurum will either set the food down and tear smaller chunks off until the entire thing will fit down the esophagus, or it will instead use smaller, inner teeth (adapted from ancient, vestigial proboscis barbs) to tear and chew the meat until it is in small enough chunks to fit safely down the esophagus and into the stomach, where digestion begins. After being processed within the acids of the stomach, it descends into the intestine, where nutrients are partially digested by the body, with wasted remnants excreted out the cloaca on the opposite end.
Armor: Aurix possess very little natural armor, namely consisting of a leathery neck plate across the top of their neck (but not the lower section), and shark-like dermal denticles which cover their entire body as a type of scaling. These dermal denticles are also strengthened in order to support and anchor more powerful swimming muscles throughout the body, and thereby serve a dual purpose in this fashion.
Other Defenses: Aurix possess electroplaques stored in their tails, which produce a low amp voltage capable of causing both dizzying discomfort and weak migraines able to cause incapacitation to terrestrial foes as well as being capable of dealing actual physical harm to their more aquatic opponents. They also possess weakly poisonous skin and decent poison resistance, as well as their bony calcium skeleton, which has been strengthened by thickened bones, chiefly in the ribs and legs. Their camouflage is of a primitive design, made of nothing more than specially-colored skin built to help them blend in with the murky swamp waters of their home.
Weapons: The Aurix possess a number of different weapons at their disposal. They are listed below in order of usage importance:
  • A large, sharp stinger made out of bone, located at the tip of their tails. Nicknamed the Bonestinger or occasionally the Bonescythe, it possesses a hollow center through which a venom sac located at the base injects neurotoxins. This stinger is built to easily be held over the body in a scorpionesque position while on land, yet can uncurl to be held straight back when swimming.
  • Elongated claws on the secondary pair of tentacle-arms. These are used to rake at their prey (namely the Grendons or Quirlax), although they are also used during fights with other opponents.
  • Killing claws exist on the first toes of both feet. These are used be slashing at some prey (preferrably when they've fallen already) or while leaping at prey, which can inflict relatively deep wounds.
  • Their mouth, formed into a four-way split jaw, is capable of opening far wider than any conventional mouth. This allows them to bite huge chunks of meat off of foes and prey alike. The mouth is filled with a compliment of very sharp, serrated teeth, used for tearing rather than chewing. Because of this, an Aurix will generally tear large chunks from their prey, and set it down; it is here that they will tear smaller chunks off that can more successfully glide down their esophagus. It has been nicknamed the Death Petal, but this term has not caught on on a large basis.
  • A spitting organ located within their mouth, used to fire projectile neurotoxin at their foes. It is usually aimed for the eyes or open wounds. Some groups of Aurix have learned to even spit this venom at terrestrial foes from the safety of the water.
  • The electroplaques, mentioned above, are used to stun their prey, although is almost entirely used on Grendons.
  • Rows of cnidocytes on either side of all four of their tentacle-arms which possess weak neurotoxin to incapacitate smaller prey and/or creatures with thin skin.
  • Vestigial Weapon: A radula which usually lies within a tiny "nook" deep within their split jaw mouths; when used, the Aurum sticks out its tongue and whips it around, trying to saw against chitinous armors. However, with their stomachs  containing enough acidic content to digest chitin, this weapon fell into rapid disuse and is now no longer used for anything in particular.
Tools: Two pairs of tentacle-arms, capable of simple manipulation of objects, or for wrapping around prey. The first, or 'primary' pair of these tentacle-arms possess a split tentacle style of hand (which was formed when the tip of the tentacle-arm split into four or five shorter tentacles, which are used like makeshift, yet far more flexible, fingers), designed to allow further manipulation of objects. The second pair possesses three sharp claws, which are long and slender; they are used for raking against foes and prey alike. However, they are also capable of a little manipulation, although certainly significantly less than the split tentacle-arms.[/list]

Nice, a fearsome predator no doubt. Are you planning to make it sapient?

And by the way, welcome to the forums!

'Bout time!  :P

Welcome, fellow Sagan member!

Biocat: Yeah, the Aurix are definitely planned for sapience.
Both: Haha...err, well, thanks for having me.

There's a lot more information, but I figured this would start us off good, for now.

Ok so that was not as shortly as I expected, thanks to my computer getting stuck in a shop for two days. Would have been in for over a week more if I hadn't told them to give it back. Anyway, writing more information now.

Yuu: Hehe, well we shall see. It's likely to be up to my players how their attitudes pan out. ;)

Aurix: Electroreception
« Reply #12 on: November 04, 2007, 07:25:26 pm »
The Aurix use several senses to survey their surroundings, but the most intense, and in a way, unique of these is their electroception. This is what this update shall entail.

The Aurix use an extremely complex sensory network within their four death petals, called the Ampullae of Lorenzini. Although this sense is found on Earth as well, it is many times stronger in the Aurix than in any known terrestrial species. This network consists of numerous external pores that dot the surface of the death petal at the front of their heads, which then extend beneath the skin through a jelly-filled canal that eventually connects to a bulbous, membranous sac, known as the ampulla.

Normally in ampullae, it is the ampulla itself that detects the weak bio-electrical fields of nearby creatures, but in the Aurix, the ampulla branches off into several smaller canals, which point in various directions. These canals are packed with tiny, extremely-sensitive cilia, which greatly increase the effective range of the ampullae as a whole, allowing an Aurix to detect electrical signals up to a mile away in open salinated marine water, although it has a dropping effectiveness in brackish, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. It is also these ciliated canals that pinpoint the direction of signals with deadly accuracy.

These ampullae are capable of detecting bio-electric fields created by prey, temperature variation (to an extent), local salinities, and are greatly affected by electronical devices. They hunt one of their prey, the Quirlax, by weeding out the sick and the old by detecting their body's electrical outputs -- if something is not going off as it should be, they are more likely to be targets of a predation by these horse-sized tentacleiosaurs.

Very cool.

But when I think about it, doesn’t this ability kind of turned against them in the modern age where about everything around you creates massive electric fields and can drive their senses mad?

Thanks BioCat.
;D
As for the mental confusions electronics would cause to them, that's already been proposed by me, actually. It seems likely they would need to come up with a different technology, such as bio-organic technology (as an example), or even just use low-voltage electrical outputs. Who knows, maybe they'll even end up somehow uplifted to plasma or something similar.

As for the next update, I am thinking of working on a skeletal diagram.
