As the joes (and my man Sunny) said, "knowing is half the battle," Thus, the cultists must go on a recon mission. In character, this will vastly expand our options for missions  and out of character, this will really  get the story going; I really want to see where the FS story takes us. As for the final frontier, I am an adherant of old school imperialism/colonialism. Therefore, I advocate the open and straightfoward aproach, mimicing the age of colonialsm (minus the massive European atrocities aga

inst  humanity). For what is a god but a powerful being whom promises great things in return for loyalty? This could be the virgin step in forming the first vassal state of our eventual benevolent empire. And when they have fuly devolped under our watchful rule we may accept them into the galactic community as full citizens of Ropos.
PS. Clicked that link in your sig, it's good, but it seems to die off at around april.

The Lavamancer has once again taken his team through a period of rigorous training to improve their ability to use certain firearms.  As a result, they are now a little more devoted to him as a teacher and unlikely to shoot themselves in the foot when the times come to use their training.  After he felt they were ready for the upcoming challenges, Hronne contacted the Cult HQ, or at least the highest authority within the Brethren he knew.  It turned out that they had no single mission for him, rather a broader objective; stage an attack that would ensure Denilus’s coalition government would collapse, forcing the Conservative Party to join forces with the Fascists.  This would undoubtedly cause a huge amount of friction within Denilus and with Tegas, a most desirable goal.

What shall we plot to do?

A)   Kill the Denilan Prime Minister!
B)   Blow something huge up (suggest a suitable target)
C)   Stage a false coup as a group of left extremists
D)   Other

Should we tell Zaffo about this?

A)   Yes
B)   Ask for his help in accomplishing it
C)   No
D)   Other

A less tangled web

The old ‘trader’ disguise came off a treat, with the villagers easily believing that we were a more advanced tribal civilization with some form of medicine.  We took samples with Jum and managed to quickly cook up a basic antibiotic paste that the tribespeople can eat; it will work slowly but be effective nonetheless.  What matters most is that the Kenaz do not think any more of Jumanji than they should; however, they are growing more curious about his home village…

Killing the greatest man in the government is the greatest task, it will be hard, we will loose men, but we will get it done. We’ll need support from Tegas, so we must tell them about everything. It's time for some old fashioned government overthowal. Viva La Revolution!

Hronne got the Cultists to have a brainstorming session over the nature of their dastardly scheme to keep them busy while he contacted Zaffo.  Zaffo told him that the rise of the Fascists might give Tegas an excuse to take direct control of Denilus in response to the growing  crypto-Morposian threat.  He was most supportive of the idea of an extreme left-wing failed coup or other such visible threat from the other end of the political spectrum.  That way Tegas could make it look as though Denilus was inherently unstable, further bolstering support for direct intervention.  He was also willing to provide us with agents and materiel should we need it.

Do we accept his offer?

A)   Yes, wholeheartedly
B)   Just the guns and equipment; Tegasian agents will draw too much attention
C)   We need no assistance but accept his proposal
D)   No, there is a better alternative for stirring up trouble (suggest)

Thinking for the future

Consultation with the Prill has led our leaders, Io included, to question the current social structure and attitudes that we have.  The Prill are a vastly different culture and it is only though such contact that longstanding traditional values can be challenged and either break or morph to accommodate change.  Currently, we are a legalistic society, bound together by duty and a strong work ethic.  A lizard is what he does, for the most part, value being defined by contribution to the well-being of his fellows, community and family.  The vast majority of people respect the law above all else, only disobeying when they feel that an older or higher law matters more.  Despite this duty, though, society is fluid and accommodates those who wish to seek a better position, provided they are morally upright and talented enough.

The Prill, though, have a far more hierarchical society.  At birth, for instance, they once had the technology to evaluate whether an individual would be gifted physically, mentally, artistically, charismatically and so on.  From that, caste systems developed where, at an early age, the Prill were divided into several large categories (Warrior, Creative, Artisan, Worker and so on) before the needs of society and individual aptitude dictated what a single member would eventually become.  In this system, value was assigned based on one’s contribution to the collective good and talent at the craft one has chosen upon entry into the wider world.  This made vertical social change very meritocratic but horizontal change impossible.

We can look further for guidance from other aliens.  We know little of the Meenogs but much of the Kalimbo.  Their society is far more creative than ours, based around the individual as it is.  They believe that what matters most in life is to maximise a squid’s inner potential, to utilise one’s talents as best possible.  Thus someone is judged by how well they have lived their life, how broad an experience one had of what the world had to offer and to what extent gods-given talents were used to benefit oneself, friends and family spiritually and as a person.  This individual focus might mean less is achieved as a society but gives the truly talented  a chance to shine and everyone else to simply enjoy life, rather than working for their benefit.

Should we consider rethinking our society?

A)   Nonsense, the Ropidian system is still the best
B)   Perhaps becoming more like the Prill is necessary to maximise our potential
C)   The Prill hierarchy is definitely more efficient
D)   The Kalimbo stand to teach us a thing or two
E)   The Kalimbo way of life is far superior to our own
F)   Other

Seems like the best choice since the best suited for a job will be holding those jobs, as well as an improvement in happiness considering people will be in a place where they are most likely to be very successful. Another advantage would be the focused education

Hronne is easily able to explain away the advanced weapons and equipment that arrived some days later as coming from one of his former cell members in Tegas.  The Cultists are more pleased than suspicious with their new hardware and are very eager to try it out.  The ‘coup’ itself will be simple enough; the group seize control of a location from which they can make clear their ‘nature’ as left-wing extremists and flee the scene before heavy resistance arrives.  Provided we choose the right target, we can get in and out, causing the maximum amount of panic with the minimum of risk…

Where should this ‘coup’ be staged?

A)   At the Capitol Building
B)   At a prominent TV studio
C)   At a prominent radio station
D)   At the Denilus Tax Office
E)   At the Police Headquarters
F)   Other

Should we take time to train with the new equipment?

A)   What’s so different about it?  We know how to use our guns!
B)   Maybe we should do an overview shooting session and group discussion
C)   Some intense training is needed; this is heavy-duty stuff!
D)   C, but do an easy robbery mission to test them out
E)   Other

A bitter Prill to swallow

There was somewhat of a division in government; most agreed that Prill society had its merits and that they could be usefully applied to Tegas, and then to Ropidian society as a whole.

“But doesn’t this step seem a little…extreme?” asked one of the policy board members. “Just dictating how people should live, going all that way in a short step?”

“Don’t twist my words!  This is just a first step.  If it does not work we can always go back to the old ways and, besides, it’s not as though we have to change EVERYTHING overnight.  I’m all for keeping an open mind on this issue,” replied what seemed to be the leader of one group of the members.
The other answered him: “But no matter how mild our steps in this direction, how are we going to break it to the people?  Just tell them a bunch of advanced aliens woke up one day and told us how to run things?”

“Ah, Konas, you always oversimplify things.  These are sensible, considered steps; not made on the fly.  The people aren’t as xenophobic as you suggest.”

“I still refuse to back your radical position.  It’s too much too soon.”

“Ah, but there’s no need for you to back it,” replied Cudis, “I’ve added a few new members to this policy panel, enough to back my solution with a majority, in fact.”

One of the new members waved cheerfully at Konas.

“WHAT?!”

“The Dictator did not object.  He does not see it as his place to intervene in matters of social policy, after all,” smiled the triumphant lizard.

This little discussion, which had gone on for hours and devolve into a shouting match in the next few minutes, would have great ramifications for the future model of our society.

It is decided; we move strongly in the direction of the Prill Hierarchy; but where to start? (Pick two areas)

A)   Employment (regulate to reward those with careers and promote vertical meritocracy)
B)   Education (begin filtering children into specific branches by the time they leave primary school)
C)   Leisure (encourage people to do things relevant to their occupation for fun)
D)   Government (discourage the idea of rule of law and support the idea of the Dictator’s supremacy for the Greater Good)
E)   Military (bring in more specialised training and reduce support for auxiliaries and militia)
F)   Commerce (lower tariffs and remove quotas to improve industrial efficiency)
G)   Other (use other effects as a guideline to the severity of the actions we are ‘allowed’ to take)

Intensive training took a while but, in the end, Hronne was pleased with the results.  Now he could be sure that his team was truly combat ready.  After much discussion, and being reassured that his troops were ready for the challenge, the Lavamancer decided that they would go for the big one: the Capitol Building.  Such an assault would be impossible in the Eastern world or even in relatively poor cities like Gino.  However, Denilus, much like Tupos and Pesos, was by no means stable or advanced.  Here, the soldiers were no match for second-rate mercenaries let alone the Tegasians.  Flaming Sword liked to think of himself as at least a second-rate sort of person and so hoped that the Capitol guards would not pose a real challenge.

The building was typical of the local architecture: oblong, featureless and very, very grey.  It was surrounded by a security fence with two entrances, one for vehicles and the other for pedestrians.  There were three ways that he could think of to approaching this entrance: mount an assault through the big entrance, sneak in through the smaller one (at least getting the team inside) or to drive through the big one, guns blazing.  A diplomatic approach was unlikely to work; the guards would almost certainly notice their weapons and armour before they could be ready to fight.

Which way is best?

A)   Storm the vehicle entrance
B)   Infiltrate through the pedestrian entrance
C)   Drive through the bigger one
D)   Stash our guns in the Cultmobile and try to get in without incident

What time is best?

A)   Morning (less guards, less politicians)
B)   Afternoon (most guards, most politicians)
C)   Evening (least guards, least politicians)
D)   Night (are we doing a coup or are we just invading buildings for the fun of it?)

Economic efficiency

 After consultation with his cabinet, and the special committee who act as our liaison with the Prill advisors, Io elected to proceed with education reforms and a continuation of his anti-protectionism policies, this time inspired by Prill dogma.  The changes, to say the least, are not popular;
Io’s approval ratings have dropped from 38% to 32%*.  Parents are concerned about being forced to make tough decisions for their children at a relatively early age; this change will surely favour the ‘pushy parents’ of the middle class who plan out their child’s education so far in advance.  The tariff removals have also caused understandable anger amongst workers in the affected industries.  On the bright side, the other cities are happy to benefit from this change.  The protests remain, for now, vocal in nature and the stability of our city is unthreatened.

++Industrial efficiency
+Intelligentsia numbers
+Relations with S.H.O.C.
+Unemployment
-Equality

*Strong approval (9%), Approval (23%), No opinion (31%). Disapproval (30%), Strong disapproval (7%) – the biggest change is from ‘no opinion’ to ‘disapproval’.

“To the Cultmobile!” cried Hronne.  The Cultists, armed to the teeth, immediately headed for the four-door black jeep that served as the cell’s primary means of transportation to and from missions.

***

“Sure is a nice day, eh, Bisi?” said one guard.

His friend scratched the back of his neck and stretched.

“Won’t be many more like it for me…just two weeks till I retire.”

Bisi did not have much to add to this; there was only so long you could work with someone before most avenues of conversation had become either repetitive or shallow.  Silence prevailed for a solid ten seconds before it was broken by a long car pulling up to the main gate.

“Pass, please.”

A claw reached out of the driver’s window, stone chit at the ready.  Bisi looked over it for a moment before nodding and handing it back.  His colleague opened the barrier and the car continued on into the grounds of the Capitol building.  A few more minutes past, interrupted by a few mundane observations by Bisi and the arrival of other politicians; you could tell who was who by the paint used on the bumper.  Blue (the most common) for a conservative, yellow for a liberal, red for a socialist and black for a fascist…then came the unmarked car.

“Pass, please,” asked Bisi’s colleague.

A claw reached out of the driver’s window, except this time it was a pistol.  One shot was enough to kill the soon-to-be retired guard.  Bisi rushed for the relative safety of the guardhouse as a second gunlizard leant out of the passenger seat window.  The shooter was less experienced, spraying the side of the guardhouse rather than hitting Bisi.  As he ducked down, he heard the car rev up before smashing through the metal barrier with a loud clang: lowest-bid contractor, indeed.

***
“We’re in.  The alarm will probably go off in a couple of minutes,” said Hronne, stepping off of the back right passenger seat*, “so I want this to be done quickly and efficiently.”

WHAT does he want done quickly and efficiently?

A)   Kill everyone
B)   Target conservatives and fascists
C)   Kill only fascists
D)   Kill only conservatives
E)   Other

Do we have time for any of the following?

A)   Blow up the Assembly area
B)   Set fire to the building
C)   Make a propaganda video
D)   Try to encourage the socialists to join in
E)   Other

The cavalry ride again

Military scientists, independent of our own institutes, have developed a smaller version of the laser rifle.  They have shortened the barrel, depowered the ammunition slightly and made ergonomic adjustments to the frame.  What they have come up with would be best described as a laser ‘carbine’.  Although less accurate and powerful than its brother, its reduced weight (the apparatus weights 8kg, down from 15kg) and more user-friendly design would make it an excellent choice of weapon for our light and motorised troops.

How many should we order?

A)   Make it our new weapon of choice for those troops!
B)   Make it widely available to our military
C)   Restrict its deployment to small, elite formations
D)   Tell the scientists that we have no need of this weapon
E)   Other

Planning ahead

With the warp drive nearly refitted, Air Marshall Deebus is ready to give Vus his first mission into completely uncharted space…if that is what he thinks a good idea.  Alternatively, we could follow the Meenog routes to properly verify what actually exists in the systems that they have so kindly mapped out for us.

The Meenog charts are a little weathered now and some of our less mature junior navigators have taken to scrawling things on them but they are the best we have in trying to fathom the Void.

Prepare a flight plan!  There are too many choices to list out, so just take a look at the map and mark off the systems we should visit, or area of space to explore.

*Ropidians ‘sit’ by slumping forward over a comfortable piece of furniture that they would refer to as a chair.  We’d probably see most Ropidian chairs as bizarre pieces of gym equipment.

BDB wins – we head south.  Date: 6/Sear/6049, 45/Sear/0001

Operation Ironclaw

Extract from the Denilan Chronicle, a conservative newslate*:

“The 2nd of Sear started as an ordinary day for Guardslizard Bisi Opo, an employee at the Capitol Building; little did he or hundreds of others know that this particular morning would soon be anointed with the blood of four dozen patriots.  ‘We never had a chance,’ he commented, ‘these guys were professionals, well-equipped and out for blood.’ The only things blacker than the cloaks of these masked murderers were their hearts, red in equal measure from the fervour of Morposian-style Communism.  In just two hours, the corridors of the Capitol were coated with the blood of the innocent as the terrorists cavorted freely with help from the socialists and communists present, perforating anyone who dared voice support for the ways of our fathers or otherwise of decent mind.  As quickly as this slaughter occurred, they were gone, running like cowards from the scene of their most heinous crime, leaving the traitors who had aided them to be killed or arrested by the security forces that were soon to be on the scene.  Truly this is a black day, but those martyred here today will be glad to know that their deaths have once and for all proved the true intentions of the Left.”

Leading liberal politician Miriki Pele had this to say:

“I am shocked, appalled, outraged, disgusted and, frankly, enraged by what has happened here today.  Once again, a difference of opinion has gotten people killed, a return to the bad old days under the Morposian fist.  We must really ask whether Tegas’s softly-softly approach is working or whether Denilus needs assistance now, should another tragedy such as this occur.”

The People’s Voice, a militant communist pamphlet:

“2/2/49, remember this glorious day!  Although the heroes of this day were forced into retreat, we have scored a decisive blow against the capitalist and crypto-capitalists that oppose us.  Force is the only weapon to be used against the liars and bureaucrats who suppress the people; all else is folly, as they will surely not hesitate to fight back peaceful dissent with violence.  This is but the beginning: let our siblings of the 2/2 Incident be the pioneers of the future!”

Understandably, Hronne was quite pleased with himself for achieving so much with so little.

Do we need to do another mission or can Zaffo take it from here?

A) Yes, we need to provoke the public further (suggest)
B) No, we should train up, collect money, try to find new recruits and generally reorganise

Jine the cavalry

We have given the go-ahead for production of the new weapon and will hopefully see its deployment across the army.  One particular service has shown great interest in the new weapon, the nascent Ropidian Fleet Army Corps, nicknamed ‘Starship Troopers’ by the heads of the Army.  The carbine is a far more practical weapon in the restricted environment of a spaceship where mobility and rapid reactions matter more than accuracy.

+Private initiative in weapons research

Red for Meenogs

The Celesta had been sent out to seek out already-known life and something akin to a civilization to the Galactic South of the two home systems.  A tiny green star system had been found to be interesting only in that there were no planets in orbit around the star, only the occasional asteroid.  A short jump later and the Celesta found itself in a red giant system.  Vus could not resist his natural curiosity and so the next few hours were spent getting detailed maps of the unfortunate worlds being gradually heated up by the expanding sun.  Six planets remained of however many originally existed in the system, those being two “gas balls”, as Ulo called them, a gas giant and two rocky worlds.  The closest planet to the star was now a hellworld, experiencing boiling temperatures and tremendous storms before its inevitable consumption.  Ulo also voiced his opinion on how interesting it would be to see a gas giant blow up due to contact with the expanding star and, internally, Vus agreed with him.  Once their less mature sides were indulged, though, the crew took to establishing the utility of the planets around them.  On the outermost rocky planet, extensive mineral deposits were found, a “boring but important” discovery as Sekus put it.

Onward!

A)   Along the lower part of the starchart, towards the Meenog homeworld
B)   Double back and check out the large aquamarine star
