Cut off both heads and bring them as well as 2 eggs with us outside to offer to the two groups, afterward get the cavern closed off and coordinates delivered to the satellite

Vus has gained permission from his superiors to head south with the Celesta and will link up with the Transcendent for an extra fuel top-up around the planet with the sentient life that we recently discovered.  Meanwhile, shuttles will be observing the war’s progress.  The only remaining question is which southern system to check out.

These are the ones in range.

A)   A big aquamarine star (south-east) (deep space scanner reveals many small planets)
B)   A small red star (south-south-east) (DSS shows a couple of planets, one large, one small)
C)   A small green star (south) (composition unknown but leads onto two more systems; could be worth creating a fuel dump here)

Share and share alike

Jumanji emerged from the cave slowly, lifting himself to his full height.  All the Kyuui, Jum’s tribe and their former enemies, turned to stare at him.  In one quick action, he lifted his rifle into the air and let loose a primal roar of victory.  He was answered by a chorus of jubilant gurgles as the tribespeople celebrated.  Once the noise had died down a bit, Jumanji motioned them to follow him into the cave.  Soon enough, they had divided the eggs and bodies between themselves.  There were 14 eggs; 5 for each tribe and 4 for Jumanji.  He made a point of placing them back in the nest whilst making ‘sacred’ gestures.  He only hoped the supply ship arrived soon to pick them up before they died of hypothermia.

+++relations with other tribe (cool -> warm)
+standing in tribe (revered -> awed)

A difference of opinion

Hronne has received orders from Cult HQ to assassinate a prominent figure in the opposition to the Denilus government*.  Her name is Yuna Paroli and she is renowned for her strongly anti-Tegasian views.  From what Flaming Sword can tell, this either means the Cult is trying to stir up anti-Tegasian sentiment or has links with the current government; from experience, the second is a possibility but the first would be logical enough.

What should Flaming Sword do?

A)   Get to it! (we can flub it during the mission if you want to)
B)   Try to notify Zaffo of what’s happening
C)   Let Duke of Earl know (remember that guy?  Another agent in the Cult, based in Tegas)
D)   Lie to the team about the mission
E)   Do some hacking on the Cult’s network to find more about the mission provider
F)   Other

*Denilus is actually a rare thing on Ropos, a republic of all things.  Elections to Congress are held every year and a President is elected every two years.

Vus and his superiors chose to head to the unmapped system; it was unexplored and, after all, would make a good supply dump for expeditions further out into the unknown.  Once the Celesta jumped into the system, it became apparent why so little had been gleaned from the deep space scanner.

“Gah, my eyes!” muttered Ulo, squinting.

“Lieutenant, dim the brightness!” ordered Vus, shielding his own.

“Aye, aye, sir.”

After a few seconds of recovery from the fluorescent green of the gas cloud, Vus resumed his order-giving.

What did he say?

A)   Take us in further; get us in close to the nearest plannet
B)   Try to penetrate the gas with our scanners
C)   Retreat away from the gas
D)   Bring us right to the edge of the star’s corona
E)   Other

Making connections

Flaming Sword could not find out too much about the mission provider but did pick up a few interesting things from his little foray into the Cult Systems:

There is very little lead-up to this mission, just 3 days notice or so
The mission issuer (who informed Hronne) has a computer in Tegas
The mission initiator (who informed the issuer) has a computer in Denilus

Can we do the mission now?

A)   Get to it! (we can flub it during the mission if you want to)
B)   Try to notify Zaffo of what’s happening
C)   Let Duke of Earl know (remember that guy?  Another agent in the Cult, based in Tegas)
D)   Lie to the team about the mission
E)   Other

Box office knockout

After so much struggle and investment, our film based on the adventures of Vus has finally hit the cinemas of the world.  Etorge Brer said ‘the director has set an entirely new standard of success in film-making, that of distracting the audience from a thin, hackneyed plot with eye-popping (sometimes literally) special effects’ but other critics have been, like audiences, distracted.  Although not a ‘great’ film, it has sold well and should ensure continued enthusiasm for space adventures.  The only question is whether it will encourage the right sort of potential recruit.

Danger, danger

In an amazing coincidence, two projects have reached a critical point at the same time; fusion power and warp miniaturisation.  The tech teams involved are now looking to the government for approval to conduct two large-scale experiments to confirm their initial findings.

The fusion reactor has been constructed some way away from Tegas and will be tested under closely-controlled conditions.  The aim of the experiment is to prove that this method of power generation is viable and safe.  The scientists themselves say there’s only about a 4% chance of a critical failure, meaning a 24 in 25 probability that the surrounding 100km radius won’t be wiped out in a mini-apocalypse.

The warp testers, meanwhile, want to test their invention in space, at Castle-1.  They’ll send a probe equipped with the miniature drive to Ruo and back again, in cooperation with our Kalimbo allies.  They tell us that there’s a 6% chance on both warps that Something Bad could happen, although they’re not saying what that could be.

On a lighter note, the project on Lith has made public new harsh weather drilling techniques they have developed, as per our contract.  Although unexciting, this will make raw material extraction more efficient in hostile climates and also marks the first real private research discovery
by our fledgling solar state.  Expect more to follow, given more successful partnerships.

What of the tests?

A)   Give the go-ahead for both
B)   Only the nuclear one
C)   Only the warp probe
D)   Neither!  Science is scary!

“Lieutenant, increase scanning sensitivity and map out the system,” ordered Vus.

It took some time, but in the end our scanners provided us with a clearer image of the system.

We have also been able to determine that the gas is mainly composed of a chlorine compound.  This will cause some damage to our armour but not at a rate that endangers our mission.  More interestingly, we should wonder from whence the gas came in the first place; what freak accident took place here…or action by a civilized race…caused it?

The planets we can visit

A)   CG-1 (a medium-sized rock planet, we have detected no atmosphere and traces of mineral deposits)
B)   CG-2 (a small planet with a thin atmosphere and searing temperatures)
C)   CG-3 (a storm-ridden planet with high pressure but temperatures in a survivable range)
D)   CG-4 (an ocean planet with a significant amount of land)
E)   CG-5 (a miniature gas giant with several small moons)
F)   CG-6 (a larger gas giant with more moons)

Heads up

Flaming Sword managed to sneak off to an internet café and send off an email to a safe address in code, specifically asking about someone’s birthday party and whether he should buy the balloons for them. Whilst enjoying a warm spring water and iron sandwich (two pieces of slate), Zaffo mailed him back:

“It would be best if they thought someone else bought them the balloons, perhaps our friends on the north street.  Whatever you do, don’t blow out the candles on the cake; the birthday girl now knows what to do.”

What could it possibly mean…

A)   Go ahead with the mission
B)   Abandon quest

Reasonable risks

The experiments have been given the go-ahead and, indeed, have already commenced.  The fusion reactor has not exploded yet but is still warming up for the test.  The warp probe, meanwhile, has disappeared from our system; it will take at least another 2 old days to find out if it was successful.

I think DA has it.  Date: 168/Burn/6049, 546/Bake/0001

The Celesta set course for CG-4, the ocean planet with a whole lot of archipelagos.  Our mapping tools are able to deduce that volcanic activity is high, with many of these island chains having more than one volcano each.  The crust contains little in the way of resources but has a temperature that would prove suitable for Kalimbo inhabitation.

How do we proceed?

A)   Try to land the Endeavour on a sample island to analyse the ecosystem
B)   Move on to CG-1 (a medium-sized rock planet, we have detected no atmosphere and traces of mineral deposits)
C)   Move on to CG-2 (a small planet with a thin atmosphere and searing temperatures)
D)   Move on to CG-3 (a storm-ridden planet with high pressure but temperatures in a survivable range)
E)   Move on to CG-5 (a miniature gas giant with several small moons)
F)   Move on to CG-6 (a larger gas giant with more moons)

Operation: Deflected Blow

With the cryptic message at the back of his mind, Flaming Sword set out to complete his mission in the way Zaffo intended, whatever that might be.  He informed the team what was about to happen and that this would be strictly…

…a…

A)   Team affair (Sniper + Observers)
B)   Lone lizard job (Hronne)
C)   Lone lizard job (Other)

Which sniper rifle to use?

A)   A Morposian repeating rifle (scoped)

Power ****oooooo
Accuracy ******oooo
Noise *****ooooo (Bang.)

5 bullets/clip

B) Tegasian bolt-action sniper rifle

Bounce back

The probe has successfully returned from the Kalimbp, meaning that miniaturised warp drives will soon become a reality!  This could happen all the sooner, though, if we gave the rights for the warp drive to one of our corporations; they could more quickly develop a transport for us and perhaps at reduced cost.  This does run the risk of turning out to be more expensive than planned as they take advantage of their position, though, as well as giving them a serious competitive edge.  It is also worth bearing in mind what effect a corporation’s field of interest will have on the production and distribution of the transport design.

Should we do this?

A)   No, keep it in-house at LithCorp (State-owned armaments corporation)
B)   Give rights to the Bellus Corporation (Light aircraft specialists, expensive)
C)   Give rights to the Carsus Corporation (General systems, cheap)
D)   Give rights to United Tegasian Zeppelin Corporation (Airships/Commercial aircraft, moderate cost)
E)   Give rights to Lasko Electric (Computer manufacturer, fairly expensive)

ABC (D or D/E – follow up vote) wins.  .  Date: 169/Burn/6049, 555/Bake/0001

The Endeavour was dispatched with a fully-recovered Ulo.  Technically, Kius was in command of her but was willing to let his superior officer get an opportunity for a little action after so long.  She touched down on a relatively flat island, part of a volcanic archipelago but far from the volcano itself, and the sampling team soon got to work.  After a few hours of fumbling around in HEV space suits, they had taken soil, air, plant, insect and fish samples from the island, ready to be put under the microscope or safely stored away for future exhibition at the Tegas Zoo.

Where to next?

A)   Move on to CG-1 (a medium-sized rock planet, we have detected no atmosphere and traces of mineral deposits)
B)   Move on to CG-2 (a small planet with a thin atmosphere and searing temperatures)
C)   Move on to CG-3 (a storm-ridden planet with high pressure but temperatures in a survivable range)
D)   Move on to CG-5 (a miniature gas giant with several small moons)
E)   Move on to CG-6 (a larger gas giant with more moons)
F)   Head home

Long shot

Hronne was to go alone to the sixth floor of the Lemi Ritus Memorial Hospital Warehouse with his rifle, take a shot at his target (hopefully missing her) and then get out of there.  It was relatively easy to walk around the back of the lot, avoiding the security guard, and enter the building from the rear exit.  It was nerve-wracking, climbing the stairs, rifle case in claw.  Each shadow and noise could be the only warning he’d get before being rumbled.  Luck was on Flaming Sword’s side, though, and he made it to the window without incident.  He unpacked his rifle, hidden as best as he was able behind several crates; the sound of the parts fitting together seemed deafeningly loud to his ear but, evidently, they did not merit the attention of anyone else.  Handling a sniper rifle for practically the first time in his life, he could not be sure of his aim; the scope went up and down with his breathing, constantly bringing Yuna Paroli and her supporters at the rally into and out of view.

How close should he shoot?

A)   Just miss her
B)   Aim for the podium
C)   Aim about a foot away
D)   Shoot a bodyguard
E)   Other

Serious business

Rivalry over the contract for warp transportation has caused much fighting between previously unrelated companies as they vie for this very profitable opportunity.  Lobbying has whittled down the contenders to just two, the strong bid from UTZC and the weaker but not insignificant position occupied by Lasko.  The Treasury must decide how to handle this.

How should the contract be handled?

A)   Award the whole thing to UTZC
B)   Give control to UTZC but give Lasko a small stake
C)   Let UTZC handle the routes and share ship construction with Lasko
D)   Let UTZC handle the routes and give ship construction to Lasko
E)   Other combination
