A New World: The Journey RP
« on: September 19, 2007, 09:43:57 am »
September 19th, 2057, Kilamanjaro Space Elevator.
The President of the USA, Steven Gaming, stepped up to the podium. It was to broadcast to all homes, all stations, on all frequencies. "People of Earth, the Moon and Mars, today we step forward into our place in the universe, in the largest manmade structure ever. It cost every human $100 to build this, and now, half a million people will go to Ymir, a whole new world for humanity. For the past 25 years we've been waiting for this moment. I will now take you live to Commander Rhein, who will be in commanding this mission."
Every screen then cut to a tall, middle-aged man, whereing a crisp white uniform. "Guten Morgen vorld. I vould yust like too zank eferyone who helped in ze creation of zis ship vhere half a million people vill make zheir home fur ze next seferal of monzs. I hafe a feeling zis vill be a trip to remember."
Things went on like that for several hours, with various dignetries giving their say, such as William III of the British Isles, and the Middle Eastern Energy Compeny, who more or less funded the enterprise. While all this was going on, half a million people were subjegated to the most intence searches ever. They then took the elevator to the ship. When everyone was on board, after several hours, the elevators retracted. Cmdr Rhein gave his speach: "Today, ve take our place among ze stars!"

On board, everyone got their own large house, and a car-like vehicle. They were given their jobs, and luggage.

On the top deck, Rhein gave the commnad, "Start ze varp drife!"

Christopher stumbled into the docking bay. He was holding two suitcases in one hand, a fannypack, and attempting to push a small trolley with his other. The trolley was packed with several more suitcases.

He stopped for a minute to glance at the ticket he had been holding between his teeth.

CHRISTOPHER WHITE
SERIAL - 002347
DESIGNATED SHIP PSYCHIATRIST 5
DWELLING 435 - A
ENJOY YOUR TRIP

"435 - A..." Christopher mouthed slowly. On front of him was a huge televsion board featuring directions to every group of houses. There was the A corridor. He set off towards a window where you could see India, slightly obscured by clouds.

"Wow." He stopped to admire the scene, before setting off once more to his own house.

After having gone through an extensive search, Dirk was given directions to his house. 17882 - E, 17882 - E, he kept repeating to himself, afraid he would forget, even though the ticket with his house designation was in his pocket. He had to remember though, because he was carrying three suitcases and a backpack, so he couldn't easily recheck the ticket without holding up a lot of people. The large docking bay was crowded with people, most of them carrying even more luggage than he was. Corridor A, corridor F... Ah, corridor E!, he thought, after inspecting the electronic signs, number 177..., err, 17882, yes that was it!. The housenumbers started counting at 1, so he'd have to cover quite a distance. Luckily there were bus-like transporters, helping people get on their way, and he boarded the one going to '1800 Plaza'. It didn't take too long for the bus to arrive there, and his house was only a short walk away.
He only got a short time to explore his new home, before he was to report at the Engine Room to help start the Warp Drive. The house looked roomy enough at first glance. He put his luggage on his bed, searched briefly for his uniform, and changed into it. He then proceeded to his transportation vehicle, and speeded to the Engine Room. The order to start the Warp Drive was given as Dirk walked in, and he quickly walked to his post. All the senior officers where there already, and Dirk got to work helping to calibrate and recheck everything, to be absolutely sure the take-off would go perfectly.

Chris entered the house. It was more like a small apartment, actually. You were deisgnated different houses depending on the amount in your party. Inside there was a hall, which Christopher dropped his bags in, beforing continuing into the master bedroom. There was, of course, a large bed, a small plasma TV was embedded on the wall on front. There was seemingly one wall missing, it was instead a large window. Featuring the majesty of planet Earth below. He edged up to the side of the window and... yep. These people were predictable. It wasn't a window, just an extremely convincing display. There were probably millions of cameras around the side of the ship. That's what 1 trillion dollars pays for.

On the a small table in the living room, there was a thick manual wrapped in an airtight plastic package. He ripped it open and realized the first half was for the house alone, and the rest was for getting around in the ship. A small pamphlet tucked between the pages featured everything you needed to know about Gliese 581c.

"Ah... Lights on."

The cat looked at these strange people from the corner of a plaza.  They didn't look like the others.  The others had white coats and some had yellow plastic hats.  These people came in different colors.

"Miaow".  He was hungry.
He looked around the plaza for a person with a box.  The people with the yellow hats had boxes like these, always full of good things to eat.  He spied a man with not one, but two boxes.  He even carried one around his waist!
The cat followed him discreetly, pausing only to look at the big blue ball with green-yellow shapes.  It had no smell, and it moved slowly.  He soon lost interest, and continued for his quest for food.

After leafing through his manual, Chris heard some scratching at his door.

That's odd...

He stood up and opened the door. Looking up at him, with (if he was describing what the cats eyes were telling him correctly) hungry eyes.

"Er... hello?"

The cat rubbed against his legs.

"Miaow!"

He sauntered into the room, hopping up onto the bed.

Webster Astell stood near one of the security checkpoints watching the people fumble through their pockets and struggle to keep up. He placed his right hand into his scruffy jacket and ran his finger over a ticket. There was a brief pause as Astell checked the time, he ran on his own internal clock and it was never wrong; without any warning he did an about face and walked towards one of the many loading docks. As Astell approached the gate his hand went back into his jacket, he removed a dock worker's badge and held it up to the guard on duty. The guard looked up briefly and waved Astell through the gate; Astell checked his watch and discreetly turned a dial as he walked.

Nearly instantaneously a strange interference struck all of the ship's cameras for a few moments, when they eventually recovered Astell was nowhere to be seen.

Astell leaned leisurely up against a wall near the engine room, there was a slight commotion and a gruff looking man came out.

"What the hell are you doing?" he spouted "We're about to shove off! Get your lazy ass into gear!"

Astell nodded and walked into the main engine room. He strolled down a long corridor and once more slid his hand into his jacket, a small gray cylinder rolled around in Astell's hand. Off to the right and about ten yards away was a small access port on one of the engine's various systems, as Astell approached it he tripped and made sure to land close to it. Grunting in what seemed to be pain, Astell gripped the access port and slid the gray cylinder into it. He returned to his feet and unsteadily walked out of the engine room. After walking around for a bit pretending to do work, Astell made his way to the main lobby and entered a restroom. In the confusion nobody seemed to notice the engine worker ripping his clothes off to reveal a smart looking suit. Astell removed the ticket from the coat before disposing of it, then he walked back into the lobby and over to a large desk. He slid a baggage claim slip onto the desk and waited for a moment as the attendant unlocked the high security safe that held valuables. She smiled at Astell and placed a brown briefcase into his hands, Astell slipped a crisp hundred dollar bill into the woman's hand as the exchange was made.

Again Astell went to the restroom and entered a stall. He held his briefcase up and removed the brown material on the outside. With his other hand Astell tore a mask off of his face and deposited it in the toilet with the briefcase's former shell. They both flushed easily and Astell made his way back out into the lobby. He sighted an attendant and walked over to him, Astell removed his ticket and handed it to the man.

"Ambassador's Suite? One moment sir." the attendant said, slightly intimidated by Astell.

The attendant spoke into his communicator and a private car came to pick Astell up.

"If there is anything you need sir, please do not hesitate to call us." the attendant said, slipping Astell an extravagant business card "We hope you enjoy your journey."

"Don't give me crap about supply and demand. No. no. What? Of course not. Tell them to take the regulation and shove it. I am about to be flung halfway to heaven in a dirty tin can and I am not going to skimp on vaccines. That shipment of organ seeds better come through, too, or there will be hell to pay."

Ghet Vellsoon rubbed his shiny, bald head.
It had been a long day.
The trip looked long, too.

He strode across his room, a sparse, metallic space. All sleek curves and curves. Did it look to sterile? Sure. Too empty? That was a matter of opinion.

The cabinet slid open with the touch of his hand. Out came the weathered binder, plastic peeling at the edges. It was full of photographs. Here was him shaking hands with his family pediatrician; early patients; graduation from medical school at age thirteen. A copy of the Nobel prize he received for the zero-gravity operating theater. A  sliver of moonrock splattered with blood, souvenir of his stint as a medic embedded with the 31st Astro Ops division during the Lunar Revolution.

A stamp fell to the floor. Ghet stooped to pick it up, squinting against the fluorescent lighting.
The design was simple, a fuzzy dot of light, captured on some lonely night by Hubble Five, sweeping the comet shield at the edge of the solar system.

"How long until ze varp engine is ready?" asked Rhein, to no one in paticular.
"We still gotta few hours before we can launch the plume, and we should beyond the Oort cloud before then, where we can safely engage." replied a bridge engineer. Opening the plume close to a planet was dangerous, as the robots of Europa Settlement Building found out. So they had to wait until they were out of range of any planet, and for it to warm up.
"Good. You know I zink I might take a little valk on City Deck. See how everyzing is, ja?" With that, Rhein walked out the doors, and across to the lift, not before grabbing his city clothes from his own private house.

Christopher opened the fridge, it contained a small variety of frozen foods. He took a pizza and stuck it in the microwave, then chopped up a steak, warmed it a little, filled a bowl with water and lay it down for the Cat.

"I still can't believe you got aboard the ship." He said to the Cat, who had crawled over to the food.

"I mean, isn't there a space elevator that can only take up about 20 people at a time?"

The cat continued eating.

"I'm talking to a cat."

Christopher opened up a map of the ship. It was huge, a lot bigger then it looked on this piece of paper. His room was a tiny pinprick on the entirety of it.

The private car carrying Webster Astell pulled off of the avenue and into a small enclosure. It's driver stepped out and opened Astell's door.

"Welcome to your home, sir." the driver said "Please allow me to carry your things inside."

Astell held up a hand and shook his head, taking the hint the driver pulled a keyring from his pocket and handed it over.

"The keys to your home and to your vehicle." the driver said, motioning to the car "If there is anything you need please call, the card my associate gave you has a number that will open a direct line with Housing and Food Services."

Astell bowed his head to the man and held out a small clip that contained a few hundred dollars. The driver took it gracefully and tipped his hat to Astell before leaving. Alone, Astell took a few moments to survey the garage. It was painted a simple white and there was a bit of shelf space, the door to the carport was made of a very heavy material and was most likely a fortified blast door in disguise. Satisfied with the room, Astell closed the garage door and turned to the house door, he slid his key into the lock and turned it. There was a short series of clicks and the door swung open, Astell let out a bit of a laugh as he walked inside. The floor directly beneath him was polished wood and the wall treatment was a smart milky white. Further in plush carpeting took over and everything opened up into one giant great room. The whole room was about three stories tall and there was a large window that covered it's entire surface; Astell approached the window and tapped it, it was real. There was no shortage of seating in the room but it was not excessive either, everything seemed to have been done perfectly.

Leaving the great room behind, Astell stepped into a lift and was taken to the second floor. There was a fully equipped kitchen and dining area which looked out over the great room and it's spectacular view of space. Inside the kitchen was a full bar and a wide assortment of gift baskets and the like. Also on this floor was one of the suite's two bathrooms, it contained everything one would expect and sported top of the line sanitary systems and accommodations. Thoroughly pleased with the home so far, Astell moved on to the third floor, the living quarters. The first thing Astell noticed as he entered the third floor was how utterly silent it was. Peace and quiet was something that Astell had always been partial to and he found it immensely pleasing. There were three doors in the short hallway, the first led to a guest room which was better than most people's master bedrooms. Behind door number two was a recreation room which had a pool table, a television with a sofa, a place to play cards, and of course another bar.

The third and final door led to the master bedroom and it was wholly worthy of it's title. A dark carpeted floor surrounded a plush king sized bed that was flanked by two bedside tables with lamps. There was a sofa off to the side that looked out yet another window and there also seemed to be a television that descended from the ceiling if the view became boring. On the remaining wall was a fireplace with a comfortable looking white carpet in front of it. The walls of the room were an ultra-futuristic glossy black color and a soothing light emanated from fixtures located just above the semi-transparent ceiling. Astell turned a dial on the wall and the light in the room changed slightly, he dimmed them a bit and walked over to the door that would open into the master bathroom. The master bathroom was as beautiful as it's bedroom counterpart, the floors were a polished black tile and the walls were a dull yet classy gray. An obvious focal point, the jacuzzi stood up on a sort of pedestal and seemed to beckon Astell forward.

Satisfied, Astell returned to the great room and sat on the sofa. He flipped his briefcase open and thumbed through a dark green file folder, there was a photograph of a certain part of the ship and Astell stared at it for a moment. Nodding to himself, he replaced the picture and the file and placed the briefcase on the table. Astell walked over to a mirror and examined himself, he fussed with his hair a bit. He reached into his jacket and brushed his hand against the sleek black pistol that resided there. With that Astell walked out of the room and headed into the city to scout around.

Gerald pushed the door to his house open, pulling a cart loaded down with his possessions in behind him.  "Lights," he called out, greeted immediately by light fixtures coming on.  He'd helped design the programs behind the vocal interface, and probably knew them better than the manual they'd left could describe.  He turned his attention to the video window, "view reset, 180 degrees by zero, reference point:  Helm."  The screens view changed from the open star scape to a real time picture of the space directly behind the ship, he figured that it would be his las chance to see the solar system like this, he may as well take it in.

He set about unpacking, first setting up his personal terminal and turning it on.  In a few minutes he had logged into the ships data-net and descended to the base levels of its code which few would ever see.  He cleared his throat and spoke clearly, "Athena, online."

A light blue tint appeared at the edges of the screen and a vaguely feminine, but still resolutely mechanical, voice answered him.  "Athena program initiated."  Athena was one of several personal AI's he'd developed over the years and brought on board to either assist in his work or continue developing.

"Begin monitoring the data-net base level, log all anomalous readings and interpret for possible patterns."  Patterns were Athena's strong suit, and usually the Achilles heel of AI's.  It had taken more than a year to get right.

"Acknowledged, data log established, monitoring begins now."  Gerald nodded to himself and headed out the door.  He thought he should get his bearings before the crowds got too bad in what he expected would be dozens of post-launch parties.
Nefarious?  Nearly.  Ne’er-do-well?  Never!  Neither nearly names this narrator.  Naive and knowledgeable, notorious and inscrutable, this nascent Nero is known naturally as Neoadept.

Rhein was originally going to go to buy a new hat, but decided against it, seeing as the younger civilians would be partying on the City Deck, so instead he went down to Suburban. They would be directly under Saturn's rings soon, so he went to Observation Park, a window to the Galaxy.

The park was just like any park you would see in a city centre, except it was in an entirely different room. Instead of sky there was a 2 foot thick glass and perspex barrier, complete with transparent heat insulation. Rhein knew some artists were on board simply the sights.

Rhein stood in the centre of the park for about fifeteen minutes, when he heard the doors open. "Ah, guten tag!"
