Matt Groening versus Seth MacFarlane
« on: August 25, 2007, 11:07:26 am »
I think most people agree The Simpsons (created by Matt Groening) is the best cartoon show ever made (despite the gradual loss of quality since 1996 when Groening left the show).
But then a new series, Family Guy (created by Seth MacFarlane, which some people insist it's just a Simspsons rip off) started to take its place. Later, MacFarlane comes up with American Dad! stating his superiority in this genre.

Groening just had some sketches and about development, he drawed and writed. MacFarlane draws a bit, voices the most funny characters and develops.

Now, do you think this shows will ever be half of in the Simpsons in their peak? I love both series, although I prefer the other two to American Dad!. Which designer you like the most?

Personally I prefer The Simpsons. Family Guy is fun but it isn't anywhere near as deep as The Simpsons used to be.

Definately, and Family Guy and American Dad are both ripoffs of The Simpsons. And by making a second show he just displayed that he really didn't care enough for the first series and was leaving it to work on itself, and moving back and forth just brings to worst. But Matt did that too, making one other worthwhile series.
But this is all my opinion, so don't flame me

Family Guy is vastly funnier than the Simpsons. American dad has brilliant spunky political humour. Futurama has an incredible style to it, and is very inventive.

Then again, I own all series of Futurama, Family Guy and American Dad.

I'm starting to like South Park a little more than the Simpsons now, despite its legacy. Family Guy...is just meh. It's ok for awhile but then it just becomes toilet humor. IMO South Park = Robot Chicken > Simpsons > Futurama > Family Guy

Seasons three through nine of the Simpsons are some of finest achievents in television histroy. They will not be topped by family guy or Futurama. (even if futurama is awesome and Family Guy is good as well)

I think Futurama is the best, I've get every season, give me a quote and I can name the Season, disk, and episode number or name :D...well usually I can, recently I've been sorta forgetting because I haven't watched them in a while.

I like them all, when it comes to my cartoons, I don't care...they're all great! Hell, if they kept making Tom and Jerry I can bet you I'd still watch it!

Hmm they all have great characters...

For instance i like Bender but also like Stewie and then there Kartman. Its very hard to choose. Guess they just will have to merge them all into one mega show written by all of them.

I agree with Sam that Simpsons was only really good from about 3 to 9, although the movie was a blast. One of my main problems with it is that when I was little, the majority of jokes were aimed over my head, and now that i'm older the majority of jokes are totaly childish. It's unfair to say that Family Guy is a rip off of it, too, since only they only really share superficial things. Infact, Simpsons is acctually ripping off Family guy more than ever, now - although the pointlessness of the jokes are so out of place you don't laugh at them.

Futurama was brilliant for depth, and totaly beat Simpsons out of the water, and it's a shame it's been gotten rid of (and that it cant take a tip of not staying down if the public wants it from FamilyGuy)
One problem is that the jokes are very... insider (although the same could be said for Simps and Fam, since their humour seems to be directed at cirtain generations, although Fam less so)

Family guy is brilliant if you want mindless fun, and it's about the only show that makes me laugh-out-loud any more, although they do take some things a tad too far and most of the reason your laughing has nothing to do with the acctual story. That's not to say they don't touch on some deep points from time to time, too, but that's not the shows job. Stewie's and Brian's characters are acctually very deep when you consider why they were made as they are, for example, and although many of the episodes greatly exagerate points (iraq war, FCC, etc) they still bring attention to them and offer an often unheard perspective, encoraging alot of people to dig deeper.

I never watch southpark, honestly, I love it, but I can't get into it.

The humour in the Simpsons is by no means childish. Maybe you just aren't clever enough for the adult humour and satire so all you see is the childish slapstick :P

Also: Where have you been? Futurama is doing exactly what Family Guy did and making three straight to DVD movies, the first of which is set to be released later this year.

Futurama is the show god would watch.

South Park has kinda gotten bland over the years. I think they need to kill Kenny some more. Although their WoW episode was pretty awesome.

I watched the Simpsons ever since it was first aired, and it has changed much over the course of it's run. At first I loved it, then over time I started to feel like it's on cruise-control in relation to it's plot ideas.

Family Guy is funny, but not in the sense that makes it great. Not to mention the show would be completely hopeless without the pop culture references and constant canned humor. I feel the truly entertaining parts of the show are the interactions between Stewie and Brian.

Best show though? Frisky Dingo.

I have to agree, Frisky Dingo is easily my favorite show now. Although its not really the kind of show you can just jump into and watch, a lot of it is referencing itself and in-jokes.

I lost interest in Simpsons, Family Guy, and American Dad all together. Not too sure how it happend. But strangely everytime I pass thos eshows while flipping through channels, I just keep flipping.

Though, if I find Futurama, I always watch it. So I'll consider that my vote for Matt Groening.

I personally like family guy for it's humor, futurama for depth and the simpsons is good for both, although i've never really liked king of the hill. By the way, family guy isn't really a simpsons rip-off of the simpsons people just say that because they don't like that it's funnier.

I have too admitt I didnt grow up watching the Simpsons, although later in life I did get my dose of Simpsons and it was alright. I prefere family guy as its good for a nice easy laugh. But lately Ive just been passing Family Guy, as for South Park Ive maybe watched 4 full episodes in my life, it was alot of fun but meh. King of the Hill I never really watch, seems too old for me and its just not that funny. So I have too say Futurama takes the cake, I mean can you go wrong with an alcoholic Robot? A poor and starving lobster man? An an old and senile yet brilliant scientist? best TV show evar!

Hmmmmm... All great shows in their moments.  I really liked Frisky Dingo, it was my favorite show on adult swim until Dark Place came along, but being that I own seasons 3 - 10 of the Simpsons, I'm going to say that's my favorite.  It's possible the other shows creators are the same (especially Futurama) but in just listening to the commentary of the Simpsons you get a real since of how much they care about their characters.  And for all the talk of the Simpsons going down in quality, have you actually given a chance to the most recent season or have you given up on the show already?  I think now that some of the best writers don't have to write for the Simpson movie any more, they are able to make much higher quality epsiodes then the past few seasons.

I barely watch it those days if channel surfing and I come across and episode I'll often watch but you can't say it's the same quality as season 3 through 9. A few years ago i used to say The Simpsons has dropped in quality but it's still better than 80% of all television. It's been getting lower though it's probably now just on par it's worth watching but not must see TV.

I really did enjoy the movie though.

Actually I was pleasantly surprised by the movie but then I was expecting something of similar quality of the current episodes. While the movie wasn't great it was much better than I thought so in the end I really enjoyed it.

I don't think its valid to use evidence from within a rival show to say Family Guy is bad.

There are plenty of reasons that aren't made as to why Family Guy is bad, just take your pick.
