Not a lot of people know that...
« on: August 12, 2007, 10:07:28 am »
This is a thread in which people can post interesting and unusual facts about themselves or their relatives and friends.

I'll get the ball rolling with: My Great-grandfather sold glassware to the second coming of Jesus.

Now, as far-fetched as that may sound, especially coming from me, consider that the foundation of Rastafarianism is that Haile Selassie is the second coming of Christ.
My great-grandfather owned a crystal glass factory in Prague in the early 1900s, and among the people he sold to was the Nigerian royal family.

Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

Ok here's one: My granfather was a member of the military in World War II, but he never saw any action.
He somehow got to a fairly high rank.

You know that spot on your back that most people have and can't scratch? Through genetics or what-have-you, I am able to scratch that spot with relative ease.

My grandfather served in Vietnam until he got hit by shrapnel in the back of his leg. He recently got a new knee I believe.

I am descended from Hermann Hesse ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_Hesse ), a famous german writer and poet who once got a Nobel prize.

I can also bend my legs so that while sitting in a chair I can put my legs on the table in front of me, sometimes more for comfort than showing off.

Hey, I've read Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha!

It was a great book, it flaked out at the end but it was still a great book. :)

My great uncle was a head tariff officer in hungary or europe or something like that..except then there was some scandal about a guy cheating on taxes or whatever, so he quit because the government was corrupt. I think. Maybe not.

My grandparents survived the holocaust...

not a lot of people know that somewhere out in the pacific a man sitting in his fishing boat, was killed by having a cow landing on him.

thats a fact, really high up in the sky there was an airplane carrying cows, they noticed that the weight was pulling them down, so they had to "drop some load". unfortunatly the guy in the boat was hit. what an embarrasing way to die :D

I had a Great Grandfather from Sicily who owned a small plantation in Brazil until the yellow fever epidemic, when he moved to Pennsylvania.

My family counts Mathew Hopkins as one of our ancestors, thank god for grandparents who have too much free time on their hands and an interest in our family tree. Although we're not sure if he's a direct ancestor  or not.... :-\
What have you got against intellectual midgets? They're quite smart little guys as far as i can tell.

I'm a descendant of Hannibal Hamlin, vice-president to Abraham Lincoln in his first term.

Luckily he was dropped from the ticket in 1864. I say that because the new vice-president, Andrew Johnson, was almost assassinated the same night as Lincoln, when John Wilks Booth (or an accomplice, not sure) tried to slit his throat with a knife. Fortunately, Johnson had been in a horse-riding accident recently, and his throat was protected by a brace. Had Hamlin been vice-president at the time, he may very well have been killed.

I hear he was a merry old soul.

Do you have any proof to back that up?
