Hooray, my Dad got me...RINGWORLD
« on: August 09, 2007, 04:21:46 am »
Not even started yet, but he's a very good writer, heard amazing things about this book, and I noticed that there isn't an actual topic for it :o...seriously...WTF?!?! How does such a famous book lack a topic?

So ummm, thought I'd start it. Anyone else read the book? Is it as good as the legends say :P, it seems a little too short to me (as are so many Science Fiction books :().

I read it a few years ago.  Great book.  The next couple of books in the series aren't so great but that one is fantastic - and to think that all those ideas came from quite a while back.

Be prepared for some laughs between the puppeteer and Speaker-To-Animals, some of their dialogue is hilarious.

Read to like chapter 3 last night, love it ;D

I don't understand why he chose to piss Speaker-To-Animals off by saying loudly that he had a Kzin as a pet...why didn't he just try to talk? ???

Hereditary luck :D, crazy Puppeteer! :D

No idea, I haven't read the book in a long time.  But just wait until they all start bickering I couldn't stop laughing at those points!  The Ringworld itself is awesome and I was really impressed that Niven gave all of the crazy statistics and details (like how big it is and stuff, you'll see when you get to those parts).

Glad you're enjoying it!

Anyone saw that video where the kid opens the present and goes crazy over his new game console?

I imagined sltlamina doing that when he got this book. :D

Read a lot of it today.

I'm starting to get the picture that this thing has only like a wafer thin base, what the hell happened there?

I dunno why, but I knew it was the impact site from an Asteroid/Meteor (not saying what in case I spoil it for anyone), I dunno when I came to the conclusion, but I did at some point! Is Nessus alright though?

I R IN NEED OF TEH SEQUALS!

Who was Nessus again?  It's been ages since I read the book.  And no the base is huge.  It holds oceans in it!

Oh right, yeah I'm starting to remember it a bit now.  Wow, you really forget a lot about a book after a while.  I don't usually re-read books but if this is how well (badly) I retain information then I'm going to have to!

Awesome book! Read it in 2 days, finished yesterday.

By the way, the oceans are made with indentations, so it's not like the outside of the ring is flat all the way around.

Yeah, if it hadn't been made with indentations then it wouldn't be the way they wanted it, over thousands of years the beaches and such would erode, and they wanted it to look as it did.

Now if you wanted something natural you would make it flat and just dump a s**t load of rock and soil on top.
