Syntyan
« on: August 09, 2007, 03:42:37 am »
I finally decided on what I want my creature to be like. I've always wanted the head this way, I could just never be happy with the body configuration of any creatures a drew. So now, I, Scott, me, present...to you...

Syntyan

Stats:

Height: 9-12 feet tall
Weight: 200-220 Kilos
Life Span: Before Medical science, 120 years, afterwards, up to 400.
Defences: Not much, have a large mane that puffs up when threatened or scared to scare predators. Tend to become electrically charged when threatened.
Personality: Peaceful, Kind, Playful, Paranoid about safety
Gestation Period: 12 Months (3/4 of a Gelt year)

General Info:

The Syntyan (Sin-Tea-An) are a gentle species of herbivorous creatures from the planet Gelt (G/Jel-t). They stand between 9 and 12 feet tall, and weigh some 200 or so kilos and are very strong. They are the only intelligent species from their planet. They rose to this position because of an almost complete lack of defences, and through a serious of random genetic mutations.

Their limbs all have 3 sections to them, they have 4 legs positioned in such a way as so that they can move in any direction relative to where they are without turning their body around. The arms were originally in such a way, but when their brains started to get larger (density doesn't mean dumb :P, quite the opposite) the arms evolved to face in one direction, although because of the way they are jointed they can reverse the position of their arms and manipulate things 'behind' them just as well.

They have 4 black eyes, when it gets very dark they can see in infrared. They can also 'sense' (but not physically see) ultra violet radiation, they evolved this way as they orbit a small red dwarf witch has a habit of giving off solar flares quite often, if they sense dangerous levels of UV radiation they head for cover.

Their fur is Violet to blend in with the plants on the planet. The stripes down their back differ in colour, environmental factors and genetics both play a role, if they live in a heavily forested area with red fruit, the stripes would mainly be red, although they aren't always.

For no apparent reason they also developed a copper 'super coil' (coils wrapped into coils, wrapped into bigger coils, and so on and so forth) system through their bones witch leads to their hands, by harnessing electrical currents they can give off electrical charges and even create small magnetic fields. It is most likely that this was a failed evolutionary attempt, at least failed in the sense of what it could have become (although Alien genetic modification has been speculated upon). It is fairly useless in everyday life, although very creative Syntyan can put it to use in everyday activities (with a fair bit of determination and concentration mind you)

Because of this the Syntyan are practically immune to electric shocks, they're body absorbs it and can use it.

Sapient Syntyan:

The Syntyan are safety freaks! All through their sapience their objects, buildings, and generally everything...has been round, nothing ever has corners or edges. They studied physics vigorously, developing control over things such as particle fields very early on into their sapience. Again, being safety freaks they bunkered up and went to ridiculous lengths to protect their species.

They shielded their entire planet from physical objects, this ruled out being destroyed by meteors, although the first few shields being primitive in nature also lead to the tides being screwed up. This was fixed with later generation shielding though. Later generation shielding also boosted the power of their already strong EM field which blocked a lot more cosmic radiation.

Stasis fields were developed for space ships in case anything went wrong, for pretty much everything that required risk.

Although they were a very odd species indeed, try as they might to preserve their own species and lives, they would also make the most suicidal split second decisions when the time came. They are regarded by most, as a very peculiar species.

Planet Info:

Gelt is a fairly largish moon which orbits the gas giant Hydrodor, it's about 9000 Kilometres in Diametre. Originally it was a planet although some time in the distant past it was pulled into a stable orbit around the gas giant. This apparently happened several billion years ago when the star system passed through a small 'arm' of a nebula, a very dense planet most likely captured a lot of gas around it becoming a gas giant and pulled Gelt into its orbit. It's gravitational pull is about 0.8 Gees (1 being standard on Earth).

The planet is roughly 75% Water, there south poll is very small, only a few hundred kilometres in Diametre, there north poll is very large however and is actually part of the main landmass (the largest continent)

Life on Gelt is fairly similar to life on Earth, all life is carbon based and needs water to survive. Life forms are quite a lot larger than they are on earth, the largest land animals are larger than Blue Whales, and the largest sea creatures dwarf even them.

Pictures:

Standing Up Straight:

Defencive Stance, cheek fur and mane puffed up to give the illusion of being much larger, arms positioned in menacing manner:

Hand (cos I thought it could be interesting :P):

More info later (constructive criticism welcome, etc etc...blah blah blah, bye)

Well I've always used Trunks and black eyes, think of the many times I've tried perfecting the Zyyo...and failed :P I just used the same head that I like, and shoved it onto a new body :)

About the hands, I used to wonder what it'd be like if people had hands like that. Then I found that the Elites in Halo had hands like that, so it was decided, from there on...Sci Fi Alien hands like that rocked!

Even if I were stealing ideas, you should be happy I like them that much, that's what I always think (unless you designed something, then the plans got stolen...that'd totally be totally uncool).

I don't think you're in the position to blame someoe else, he just ripped off his creatures of yours, since you already stated, that your Nauceans are just a bunch of different creatures like mice, raptors, dolphins, nautili, etc. mixed together! :P

That's because i mean it dozens of times. No matter if he did it on purpose or subconsciously it still looks like it.

I am constantly doing this and then trying to see if i can think of something else. Its hard to thing of something new. In fact its nearly impossible!

But the reason it looked familiar was because it resembled Zyyo, but i had forgotten about them until he mentioned it so i just grabbed mine since i knew where they were. In short i really should have posted this before rather than mine.

But its not surprising it looked like that becuase he drew the other one.

And I am not doing anything he did not say to me about my creatures in my thread.

...and never give that decapitated Naucean head a Ram Jet Anus.

...oh, that's about the same as what you said :(

If you're trying to find something new, go watch TV, read books, surf the web. You'll find plenty of inspiration for something original. In truth Hydro, nothing is ever created without having some influence. That's how the creative industry experts make original stuff is by using what's around them, it's no secret.

Yup. Also, you must learn to make constant redesigns and tuning. slt has the right idea of changing his old Zyyo or how I redesigned my Sombreron. Never fall in love with old designs and make new ones until it's perfect.

Yup :), at first the Zyyo had 6 legs and 2 tails with Graspers, but since then it's drastically changed (well not really that much :))

But it does look a lot different now, in fact I call it a new creature now, the 'Golough' :), and I think that this design is 'poifect'!

From a cartoonists perspective, I wouldn't say it's completely refined just yet. (If I'm being nit-picky too just ignore me.) The body layout and posture is fine, but its presentation is a bit clunky. That kind of detail work can be left to someone else to do.

There are two kinds of cartoonists. One that creates designs from scratch and ones that refine designs from the first guy.

UPDATE!

Quote from: ...ME!
Pre Sapient Syntyan:

Being a herbivorous species, and numerous, the Syntyan were looked upon by every large carnivorous, or omnivorous creature, as a feast, they were large and there were lots. They were one of the least likely candidates for intelligence on their planet (well, moon). Fortunately, because of some fluke of nature, the genetic mutation that lead to their intelligence, also started what would eventually lead to their "Electric" abilities, this ability couldn't have come at a better time at all. Had it come any later their wouldn't be any Syntyan left now. There would just be bones, echoes of the past, maybe not even bones.

The gas giant they orbited gave rise to many Jovian life forms, one of which was extremely large. The Nilorintim (Nilor in tin) were a species with a wingspan of approximately 40 metres. They were about the same length, had 4 wings, and 'biological combustion engines'. They had an entirely metal exoskeleton covering their entire body. They left the safety of the upper atmosphere every 10 or so of there years to mate on the moons and devour anything in sight (living or not). Although this began to become more frequent.

When they finally made it to Gelt the Syntyan were prepared, not by some meaningful evolutionary change, but by pure chance. The only species on the entire planet that could actually stand against these foes and claim victory were the Syntyan. At night time massive flashes would light the sky, but the lightning was going up, not down. Entire herds would be fighting for their very survival against these monsters that might as well have come from the mind of some, sick, cruel, twisted, and seriously downright evil person. Well over 60% of the planets creatures were wiped out, but in the end the Syntyan stood the victours. Entire forests and jungles had been burned to the ground. Over a billion dead corpses with well over a foot of metal covering them littered the planet, never rotting, just lying there, silent and still. Reminders of the horrible past that had pushed their very species to the brink of extinction, but they prevailed, and eventually become intelligent. They Syntyan came, they saw, they conquered.

I realise their are flaws, so sue me! :P, I'll work them out!...the ummm...the Nilorintim got tired...YEAH!

'nother slight update!:

Some info on their sapience, mainly their own preservation...

Niiiice, that's really good (I'm currently updating it in a new tab too, I just refreshed in this one and was like 'weird'), thanks :) I'd love to see that when it's done. That's almost perfect, but the arms look a little...odd :D, just make them have 2 sections if you want, I've found trying to draw limbs with more than 2 sections always turns out horrible :(.

When the idea hit me in that spice topic I just had to use it...

Fuel:

While the Sytyan's were still 'developing' a more advanced civilization, they stumbled upon an interesting fuel source. A certain sap like substance that is secreted from giant mushroom shaped trees/plants to attract animals was found to be extremely reactive with other chemicals. It is several times as efficient as fossil fuels and is abundant. They started creating entire plantations just to harvest this chemical for use as a fuel.

Upon burning it Carbon Dioxide is released, although the trees could clear this up (being the size they are). They used this fuel source to power machinery and such, although they discovered Fusion extremely quickly and switched to this. Being a moon in orbit around a gas giant was extremely useful when you needed a supply of hydrogen.

It is rumored that they accidentally came upon another energy source a little later on, some say that it was antimatter reactors, but nobody has ever said.

How do you mean about their culture? They don't have a god as they realise that doesn't make sense and complicates matters. Uhhh, you mean like the way they may interact in everyday life? The way they treat each other and alien species?

Sltamina, Culture means clothing, weapons building styles, technology.
And Hydro, you've made like a 100 creatures. Its just coincedence if one of those things slightly his creature.

Yeah like this. Name some hobbies, how they interact, are there casts, filosophy (bad spelling?) in life? I really like that part.

I can't do all that at once, I...oh ok, reply and I'll work something up. I might get some paper to be on the safe side, specifically what do you want to see or read about first? Do you want any pictures of anything, or just what you said then?

What is their government like? Communist? Democratic? Feudal?

Government:

The Syntyan don't have a government as such, there is no one 'leader', it's more a council. The high council consists of 16 Syntyan, together they will make decisions in the best interest of the species as a whole. It runs very smoothly, they'll take into account what the population says, but should disputes occur they will always try to take the peaceful path (being the cowards they are).

Being extremely intelligent makes it hard to understand how they work. They seem to look at every possible outcome, as if they've somehow mastered the chaos theory to an extent to which they can almost accurately predict the future. Of course this is not true, but they can quite accurately predict how another species or such will react to certain courses of action.

If a vote results in a tie, a 3rd party will be called upon from the public to resolve the matter, they act much like a jury, listen to both sides, and then make a decision in the best interest of the species as a whole (in their opinion).

A little bit of Space age stuff. I'm not gonna go in any specific direction here, I'll work on past and future as I feel (I just realised now that this computer is in my bedroom with the...chunky monitor, that I was right, things on the LCD really looked different, #0000FF did not look blue on the LCD (although I knew it was) >:()

...Disclaimer: Misleading title imminent!

Conquering the Cosmos:

It is theorized by all intelligent enough species, that one day their population will become too large for planets alone to sustain them. And that eventually their power requirements will be enormous. Being an intelligent species, the Syntyan also knew that this fate was inevitable. They decided to do something about it before it became an out of control problem.

At some point in the Syntyan's history, they managed to build a 'Ringworld'. Rumour has it that graviton manipulators were used to condense almost an entire nebula into a super strong, and fairly dense, yet entirely stable substance. Of course because of it's sheer strength it had to be made in the ring shape, nanobots were incapable of reconfiguring the structure of the substance at an atomic scale, the manipulators fortunately were capable of this. The ring measures approximately 1 AU in radius (or is it diametre...I fforget :-\, someone who gets what I'm trying to say correct me), about 100000 KM wide, and the actual base of the structure is several KM's thick (apparently it's not entirely thick and may possibly contain vast tunnel systems, transport systems, or something else entirely).

More nebula were harvested of Hydrogen and Oxygen to make the vast amounts of water needed, the atmosphere was pumped in, and still even more interstellar gas was used to make the star for the system. The entire structure was made habitable, and eventually was inhabited. The surface area on the inhabited side was several thousand times more than the surface area of every other planet hospitable to the Syntyan, combined.

After a millennia or so of keeping the ring secret from the galaxy, they decided to allow other species to come and take advantage of the, almost completely empty (although inhabited by close to half a trillion Syntyan) ring. The existence of such an artifact of that magnitude, at first caused panic, anger, and fear throughout the galaxy. Although about a century after the rings galactic unveiling, such silly ideas about the ring and the Syntyan themselves were forgotten.
