Demos
« on: August 07, 2007, 09:36:42 am »
I've been meaning to start a topic about demos for a while, especially now because xbox 360 seems like it's been getting two demos a week. Any way if you live in the US I highly recommend you download the demo for Eternal Sonata, it so good. The battle system is great, it looks pretty as all hell. It comes out a week before halo 3 here in the US, ahh I'm going to be broke all winter.

In other demo news 360 should be getting a Strangle Hold soon, and I noticed that the new OXM as a demo of Beautiful Katamari so I would expect a demo on live next month.

Me too.

Anyone who owns a 360 should download the Ace Combat 6 demo. It's amazing.

I played the Eternal Sonata demo months ago when it went up on the Japanese market place.  The whole thing was in English.   ;)
I quite liked the game, the graphics are very beautiful, and the battle system is actually fun.  I'd definitely get it over Blue Dragon, but the typical Japanese storyline seemed a little too cliche for me.

And Strangle Hold is surprisingly good.  I wasn't expecting much from it, but it's a lot of fun being able to dive around massive areas and just shoot everything to pieces.  The storyline is very generic, but it's done in a way that it's pretty funny.  My only real problem is that it seems like a very short game, you get the full first level in the demo, and there's only seven in the final game.  Don't think I'd pay full price for it because of that, but maybe when it comes down a little.

Stranglehold looks like a fun rental.

Of course, Kotaku put up the specs for the PC version, and they are not slack at all!

The Special Edition PS3 version of Stranglehold comes with an HD version of the film "Hard Boiled". An HD film and a game for $70 isn't a bad deal, but, y'know, it's still $70.

Shooting people in the balls: Priceless.

I really enjoyed the destructability of it all. If you haven't already, go into the demo, and destroy the fountain at the start. Oh, yeah!

I love demos. I'm one of the few people who buy a game before they get the demo.

Ninti need demos on the Wii. Yes, they have releases of old games that have some relevance to ones coming out soon (mario kart 64, pit's adventure, paper mario - all are brilliant games though...) but propper demos could attract so much more attention. The problem is, many of the nintendo only games at the moment are very... open. One idea, massive gameplay (kind of like spore) as opposed to several ideas, one main gameplay route (half life 2, for example, or 90% of other console's games) so a demo would effectivly be giving away most of the game for free...

Well more controlled games like Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy would work well in demo form. The only problem is that it would be near impossible to squeeze those down into a manageable size that would fit onto the Wii's 512 MB of internal flash storage. And I think most of us have some of that storage taken up with VC, game saves, channels, etc.

What Nintendo should do is offer DS demo's through the Wii. That, and/or release a Wii HDD.

I tried the Bioshock demo and it was cool but I had to stop because of technical problem. I picked up the crowbar and bashed the door but I had to crouch to go under. It kept saying "press LS to crouch". What is LS? I pressed the left trigger and button. I pressed every button on the remote and some together and I couldn't get him to crouch. What did I do wrong?

Finished the Bioshock demo tonight.
It's not bad but, based on the demo alone, I'm not sure it lives up to the hype.
Controls are tight and the environments are beautiful. However, the coincidences needed to lay the basic storyline are, in my opinion, too many.
Going to have to replay it later but, at this point, I don't think it's going to be worth $60.

Beautiful Katamari is now out in demo form.

I tried that one last night.

OMG, LadyM is an Xbox newb! Shocking!

Why is that so shocking? I'm a gamecube girl. I haven't played many XBox games. The main one was Oddworld Strangers Wrath.

I got further in the Bioshock demo, I'm not sure it's my kind of game.

Has anyone else been playing the Culpcept SAGA demo on 360? I've been having great fun with this one. The game is best described as a combination of Magic the Gathering and Monopoly. I was excited to here that it will also be only $40 when it comes out in February!

The new Burnout Demo should be hitting the 360 and PS3 on Thursday. I'm looking forward to his game sense the last one was a ton of fun.

My post got deleted but I'll do it again see. Anyway a demo for The Club should be hitting all you Euro and Aussie kids with 360s today (I think it's already out for PSN). Us americans might have to wait but from what I hear the game sounds interesting. It's a FPS with a combo system and you don't need to shoot everyone. I don't quite get it either but it sounds like SEGA is trying something different so they should get some kudos or some kool-aid at least.

But from what I have been hearing this is a jucy topics, any who, anybody play the demo for anything like MGS4 or gta4. And not that this counts or anything ilikesanta you coulda' modified your post instead of double posting. ;)

I checked out the demo for The Club last night, and it is indisputably the most fun I have had with a game for months, just as the opening cinematic rolled, I knew I would love the game.

The score system is fairly similar to the Kudos system in PGR, except it plays an even larger role in the game play. As soon as you kill the first enemy, you need to rush to get to the next one in order to build a combo. This system is fantastic in that it adds some real time pressure to game and it's great fun to repeat a level over and over again to sustain a combo throughout an entire stage. The game also awards you with points for style and hit location, for example if you do a roll and the instant you finish the move you headshot three enemies in a row, the game will award you with a massive amount of points. Also, I really do mean a massive amount of points, with the potentially enormous multipliers my scores on the demo level were at roughly 3,500,000.

As far as visual design goes, this game has hit the nail on the head. I'm not sure what engine they are using, but what they've achieved can be likened to the awe present in Call Of Duty 4. Running at what seems to be a solid 60 frames a second, the game places huge explosions, tonnes of enemies, beautifully realistic lighting, and great textures all in the frame at once.

The character design is also inspired, although only one is playable in the demo, the demo allows you to flick through and check out their stats and biography. Each character is presented with fantastic detail and personality, only loosely based on familiar stereotypes.

But all this presentation wouldn't be complete without the fantastic sound design, I first played the demo with headphones, and it is perhaps one of the largest reasons I took to the game so quickly. The helpless enemies in the stages hurl, along with bullets, gloriously acted insults at you. Whilst every sound in the game echoes and reverberates through the environment perfectly, allowing you to gauge where enemies are shooting you from, and to feel the bullets brushing against you. Also, no review of this demo would be complete without a comment on the fantastically composed soundtrack. They must have got the guy back who does the music for PGR, because those electro/techno beats could not be more suited to the intensity.

Yeah so it's a fairly good game!

When do you guys in America get to download it?

Yeah I checked it out, the first bit in the cave was fun, the first bit in the Jungle was fun. But after that it just got a little bit dull, sure the graphics are great, and the combat isn't too bad, it just got a bit repetitive.

My favorite thing about it in fact was the presentation, in particular the animation of the knife kill moves against the dinos and soldiers.

They need to work on the dinosaur combat, they end up just surrounding you and the controls make it really difficult to just swing round and shoot them individually.

However, one thing that was interesting for a while was the whole 3 sided war thing that's going on, sometimes the dinos will attack the enemy soldiers, it's entertaining choosing which ones to kill first :P

Wouldn't the idea be kill none of them 1st and just pick off the winners. Or at least side with who is losing switching sides to keep things even until they effectively destroy each other?

Well most of the time when the dinos attack the enemies it's because there's nothing else to attack, so it's a  bit boring watching them all fight, I need to shoot things!!

Then like i said shoot the winning side so there are less of them to shoot when they run out of enemies. If your shooting efforts turn the tide of battle start shooting the other side until it's 1 on 1 then just shoot who ever gives you the most trouble.

Minor Necro double bump...

For those that like Strategy RPGs, there is a demo of Operation Darkness out on Live for those of us in North America. It takes place in WWII but there are werewolves and zombies and stuff magic! The demo starts a little slow (the map is huge compaired to most SRPGs) and the camera can suck at times but the demo is farly long and I haven't beaten it yet but I'm liking the game so far. It comes out June 24 in the states I might have to pick this up.

I think it's pretty bad when you're enjoying cutscenes more than gameplay...

Meh. It's ok, not as good as the hype (nowhere near), but it seems like the only way you can really control groups is by mass-selecting them. Difficult to select small groups...

The sad thing is Universe at war had better controls for the 360 then Halo wars does.

Yet another sub par game that will sell and get ace reviews because of the name.

Anyway i tried the Resident evil 5 demo, Fantastic cant wait for the full game.

Eh- halo wars wasn't bad, just not worth the full price, it almost felt like a XBL arcade game, but that's probably just because that how i feel with console RTSs.

The cinematics were very pretty though ;D
but yes it will get a lot of good rating simply because it is a halo game. Halo itself is great, but halo wars just seems...unpolished.

A disappointment.

Meh, all my console-gaming friends seem to think that the game is amazing.

...I really want to direct them to company of heroes. Seriously, the game is "Who can build more units?" The squads in the game...feel a lot less like the squads in other games. More like one unit with 3 characters representing it instead of 3 characters who are working together in a team. But that may be because of my difficulty selecting less than 8 groups at a time...

They are improved RE4 controls and they wont change, I didn't have an issue with them at all personally.

Actually after playing Halo wars some more i actually grew addicted to it. Its a lot more in depth then at first glance. The funny thing is Gungir said what i first thought, That it was just who can build more units. Its really not though.

I pretty excited for the full game now since i gave the demo a second chance and dug a bit deeper in to the gameplay. Its surprising since i hate the halo series with a passion.

I will get it but RE5 has first priority. I'm still attempting to play the GC RE games so i have the low down on the story. ...not going well the older REs scare the crap out of me. Not to mention they are confusing because they have player choices and multiple endings so its a pain in the arse to figure out what is canon.

Anyway while i hate Halo and like Halo wars..i am actually hoping it does very well. RTS is one of my favorite genres...and while i love PC gaming..i just cant keep up with the upgrades anymore. So if Halo wars does well then i am sure more RTS games will come out for the console.

Still have to try that...
Found an interesting demo on steam the other day for an indie title called Gratuitous Space Battles.  Essentially, it has you building ships from scratch, deploying their locations, adding in some behaviorial tweaks and then relinquish control and watch the battle unfold.  It's a pretty interesting take on the genre, but I'm not really sure that the full version is worth the cash.  It can get pretty boring pretty fast, it seems like.  Cool concept, though.

That's what Gratuitous space battles is about? I have to try that now.

That said I have been having more fun with the AVP demo then I have with many many full games.

ON the 360, the demo for Sonic Kart racing is out. I gave it a "spin" and it seems like a good kart racer. Looks good and Banjo is in it so it has that going for it.

Necro double post bump!!!

Demo for Crackdown 2 is out on 360. I've played it a couple times now and I'm really digging it. I didn't like it at first. The graphics don't look that great, and the combat seemed boring, but than I played it some more, and found some more depth. Splattering hundreds of freaks in a car is great fun, and then there are my lovely orbs. It's defently not the deepest game but it still is fun for me. Oh and 4-player co-op.

Is it much better than the first?
I found the first game to be pretty damn sloppy and quite often really dull.

Um, you probably won't like it the 2nd one. You can try the demo and see for yourself how much you don't like it.

There's a glitch where you can play the demo past the half-hour mark.

Loving it so far. Thanks for that link, santa. Living up to your namesake, I see...

Edit: I think it was fixed, as this just boots you to the end of demo sequence.
Re-edit: nvm, works. I think the difficulty has to be on tough.
Re-re-edit: Played a bit with Santa, had fun. Unlocked wingsuit...is difficult to control.
Re-re-re-edit: Update released. I'm assuming it's been patched.
