I've been wondering. What is a metagame, exactly?

I thought a meta game was making a new unintended game out of an existing game. Such as turning the Sims 2 into a caveman game or survivor.

Are they? Or are the more like "choose you own adventure" games or storytelling.

According to wiki it look like none of these are meta games lol

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metagaming

Metagaming is a broad term usually used to define any strategy, action or method used in a game which transcends a prescribed ruleset, uses external factors to affect the game, or goes beyond the supposed limits or environment set by the game.

In short how can i break the rules of a sandbox game like the Sims 2? Or how can you break the rules of a game you made up?

You could spell planning correctly for starters.  Unless your intend is to level metagaming.    :P
