PC Games / Sins of a Solar Empire
« on: January 31, 2008, 02:25:49 pm »
Anyone else looking forward to playing this game?  I probably won't get it right away, I'm low on cash, but so far it seems like my kind of game.

It's a sci-fi space RTS that incorporates empire management stuff like a turn based 4x game from what I can gather.

When I first heard about it my initial reaction was not very excited.  But recently after I had been trolling around galciv2.com for a while I stumbled on it again and actually learned some stuff about it, and became intrigued.  Funny, that's the same thing that happened when I first heard of stalker.  I went "meh" then learned more about it and went "oooo".

Anyway it comes out in a few days (Feb 4th I believe) and I was wondering what other people thought of it.

TV / A Song of Ice and Fire, the TV show
« on: February 23, 2007, 08:05:37 am »
Couldn't help but notice nobody else mentioned this, but George R. R. Martin's awesome A Song of Ice and Fire novel series had been optioned by HBO to be made into a TV series. http://grrm.livejournal.com/11326.html

I'm pretty excited, I think it definately has potential, even if there's hardly any chance of it being made within the next 2 or three years.  George has stated in the past he wouldn't be against the idea of his books being made into movies, with the stipulation that in order to do it correctly, they would have to split each book into 3 movies like they did with LotR.  While that seems excessive (especially since there will possibly be eight books in the series, and possibly more if he splits more up like he did with A Feast for Crows) he justifies it by saying that each of his books is about as long as Lord of the Rings is.

This may be an excellent middle ground, people will get to see the series made visual, and it can be as long as GRRM wants it to be (or as long as HBO will allow him to make it).

Any thoughts or gripes?

Edit:  I just noticed GRRM's news page, too: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/news.html  12 hours per book...  SWEET.

PC Games / New Sam & Max Game
« on: November 08, 2006, 10:57:56 am »
I can't believe I didn't notice this earlier!  Apparently, the first episode of Sam & Max came out on November 1st.

There will be 6 new episodes between now and May (if all goes according to plan).  The first episode is $8.95, but if you buy the whole season ahead of time, it's only $34.95 for all 6 episodes with the option of getting the whole season on a disk after it's all out for only the cost of shipping and handling.

I haven't gotten it yet, but I'm giving it serious consideration.  I've heard mostly positive things, with the exception of a few people who think the puzzles are too easy.  This episode is apparently about 2 hours long.

I was always a fan of the LucasArts adventure games like Sam & Max Hit the Road, Full Throttle, Maniac Mansion 1 & 2, and the Monkey Island series.

If anyone gets/got this, I would very much like to hear your (SPOILER FREE) impressions.

Everything Else / Net Neutrality in danger in the US

I was casually browsing http://www.nuklearpower.com/ today (the home of Brian Clevinger's Webcomic 8-Bit Theater) and came across an update on his site. In this update was fairly disturbing news, the internet and the freedom it entails are under attack! While the situation may not be quite that dramatic, it is something to look into and something that people should be made aware of.

That is an article that will explain what's happening.

PC Games / Jets'n'Guns

Anyone heard of this game?  If not, it's a fun shareware 2d action side scrolling shooter game.  Most fun game of its kind I have ever played.  Just wanted to tell you guys about it.  The Devs call it "The Ultimate Fiery and Bloody Experience".  Its got a good soundtrack, too.  I have just played the demo so far, but I might buy it ($20US).

Have fun!

PC Games / Mac Bootcamp
« on: April 06, 2006, 06:14:15 am »
Hey all,

Just found out about something that Apple is making called Bootcamp which will allow Mac users to install and run Windows XP natively on their Intel Macs. I used to be a Mac user (a LONG time ago, it was a Performa 6200CD), and they really are very good and reliable computers. I think this was a great move by Apple since this will get Windows users who were thinking about getting a Mac to get one, and still be able to use their Windows programs.

PC Games / N by Metanet Software
« on: April 22, 2005, 08:43:50 am »
I just thought I would bring this little gem to everyone's attention. http://www.harveycartel.org/metanet/downloads.html

N is a fun 2D side view jumping puzzle game were you play as a ninja (though you cannot attack enemies, but the CAN attack you). You have to find a switch that opens the door so you can leave and get to the next level. It has (fairly) realistic physics, especially for a 2D game. No story to speak of, with N it's all about the gameplay.

In it's current iteration (version 1.3), there are something on the order of 60 episodes, with each episode having 5 levels within it. That means that there are 300 levels!

And now, we come to the best part, the price: $0.00. That's right, 300 levels for free.

"But, Morslok," you ask, "What good is 300 levels if the gameplay stinks?" Fear not, fellow time-wasters, for N is a superbly crafted game. There are only 3 controls, move left, move right, and jump. "But that doesn't sound very fun..." you may say. Well when you include the ability to wall-jump, jump off surfaces diagonally, and having to avoid a few dastardly enemies (from rail gun robots to homing get-up-in-your-grill-and-zap-you robots, to homing missile firing robots, to chain gunner robots, to robots that run along the ground at you faster than you can run away) as well as having to avoid that deadly fall from on high, and of course the time limit (which can be increased by grabbing coins), and the fact that it takes only one hit from an enemy or one fall from too high up to kill you making you have to restart from the beginning of the level, this is one seriously fun and challenging game.

I am currently on episode 6 in the first column (you can start each column before finishing the previous one). Each column consists of 10 episodes.

I'm running out of stuff to say, so... go download it. At ~1 megabyte, a dial up user can get this game too. You should however check the requirements on the site, though. This is a fairly taxing game. It's no Doom 3, but it is also no Doom 95.

Also, not to leave out you Mac (I was once misguided like you) and Linux users, all three major platforms are supported by N. Fun for the whole family.

If you actually read all of this, then you have way too much time on your hands (or my writing is JUST that good).

Spore: General / Bars in the upper left corner
« on: March 28, 2005, 08:55:43 am »
I was just looking at the screenshots (again) and noticed something interesting, at first, in the single cell phase, 2 bars are visible (and judging by the curve of the circle to the left of the bars, there are none cut off on the top). Once we move on to the 3d game, there are 3 bars. in the editor, however, there are 6 bars whereas there are clearly only 3 for the rest of the game (all the way to the spaceship). It is my opinion that there bars represent 3 basic properties of your creature (One may be speed, on strength, one intelligence, just my opinion but feel free to speculate). So therefore, concievably the other 3 shown in the creature editor are like a before and after, how speedy was your creature before evolving this appendage? Check the bars. How much more intelligent will it be when i replace the (or add a new) brain? It's right at the top of the screen. Please remember that this is all my opinion of these bars and doesn't represent anything official.

Let the speculation begin.
