Spore: General / Could we figure out when spore takes place?
« on: September 28, 2008, 02:28:25 pm »
Using the altered positions of Sol, Polaris, etc?

That would be SICK.

I think that's what's at the center of the universe.

Save your game often, chums.

Storytelling and Roleplaying / Help me make a campaign setting
« on: June 19, 2008, 09:41:14 pm »
I'm going to be running a DnD 4 campaign on this forum that will share a canon with campaigns that I do with friends. Since I'm totally into collaboration and 2.0 crap, hows about you guys help me plot out my campaign setting's finer details? For each phase, posters in this thread will create their own nation, country, religion, etc, and describe it, then vote on their favorites. The setting will be moderate fantasy, no insane sorcerers who have entire armies of flesh golems. Make about 75% of the things named part of the human sphere, since that will be the dominant race. Don't go into too much detail, about ten sentences total.

PHASE ONE: Nations
Nations are different from countries, they are groups of people, classifications if you will. Perhaps you could call them ethnic groups. Australians, Irish, African-Americans, modern-day Maya, Catholics, and Crane School of Kung Fu all fit into the definition of a nation. Anything with an identity that goes beyond a flag and border.
When describing the nation, be sure to include the following:
-Brief historical background
-Makeup
-Climate origins
-Current status
-Values and beliefs
-Interesting quirks
-Relations with other nations within race (briefly describe other nations if necessary)
-Relations with other races

Spore: General / Girls
« on: June 19, 2008, 09:10:17 pm »
like Spore Creature Creator, on average, more than they The Sims or Pokemon, which also managed to be popular among them. It still falls short of Animal Crossing and Nintendogs in general appeal, however.

You heard it first from Aybraus.

Console Games / What happened?
« on: May 04, 2008, 11:58:40 am »
So the other day I was looking through my collection of Gamecube games, and it suddenly dawned on me: from the fall of 2002 to the end of 2004 we had no major developments in the world of video games. Period.
In 2002 we had Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime, Halo, Pro Skater 4, Morrowind, Battlefield 1942, Rachet & Clank, and Warcraft III. All were games that reinvented their genres. All were huge successes.
In 2003 we had WarioWare, Viewtiful Joe, Prince of Persia, and Beyond Good and Evil. All of them had modest sales. The best selling games were all orthodox sequels, with the exception of Wind Waker and Enter the Matrix, which were generally hated by everyone.
2004 was the same thing, sans innovative games.
In late 2004/2005 we had Resident Evil 4, WoW, Half-life 2, God of War... lots of great stuff! (But it really wasn't until much later that these got picked up. This is especially true for the console front.)

So my question is this--what happened? For two years games just plain sucked.

PC Games / Aybraus's Renamed Solutions for Stuff Thread
« on: May 02, 2008, 02:21:15 pm »
XCITING + NEW STUFF = LOOK HERE
Problem: This is another MMO-related one. People are paying (with real american dollars) Chinese sweatshop owners to get virtual money in online games! Illegally! It inflates the economy and ruins lives.
Solution: Unfortunately, MMO devs, you'll have to embrace dollar-to-gold transactions, but that doesn't mean you can't restrict it. What?
Make a system so that players can turn a certain amount of money into a certain amount of one in-game material. Not in-game currency, material, like bricks or wood or wine, something that can't easily be gathered in game. So they pick the material, then put in a buncha moneys, then put in their credit card numbers.
This will encourage trade and be self-regulating (because people only need so much bricks). If the system is convenient to use, people will use it more than IGE.
Also, force players who reach a certain a certain amount of wealth to spend it on NPC crap before they can get any more. Or just go Zelda and cap people's money tank.
Or ban chinese ips

BORING OLD STUFF WHY BOTHER READING?
Problem: Second Life is filled with weirdos and people I don't like. It seems that anarchy actually is too idealistic. What can I do?
Solution: Having grown up on the streets, I know that even without any  rules, people can make order by using the rule "Dying is bad." Agriculture aside, that's basically how civilization was made. Unfortunately, there's no way to make Second Life players pay the ultimate price. Well I say they should make killing a feature!
Once a day, a given player can kill another using a dialogue box. Ten players will be given the first four letters of his username (so they can do some justice against the murderer if the victim didn't deserve it).
The player who has been killed will have to pay a small fee in order to come back into the game with all possessions intact but under a new name. Having played an MMO and grown up on the streets I know this is like dying in the cyberworld.
The "kill button" will insure that nobody acts in a way that is not appreciated by the rest of the community.

Everything Else / Inkblots
« on: April 24, 2008, 12:34:08 pm »
So let's go ahead and identify what each of these inkblots are. Should be fun. I made them with this thing.

Look at the inkblots first and scribble down your perceptions, then post them and try to interpret them if you want.

ONE

TWO

THREE

FOUR

FIVE

My thoughts are:
One--Father Time
Two--A moth, then Tabuu from Smash bros
Three--A lion, then a Golem
Four--A skeleton knight with a face painted on his crotch, then some animals making a pyramid
Five--A yoga master, then a skeleton with a bowtie.

Spore: General / Living Campaigns like the Spore RP?
« on: April 02, 2008, 08:52:42 pm »
Does anyone know of/want to recommend a living campaign going on that would be comparable to the political space opera that is the Spore RP?

If not, I think I might be onto something...

Storytelling and Roleplaying / Dvořák's No. 9 -- The Story Thread
« on: March 25, 2008, 01:12:27 pm »
The goal of this thread is to put up anything related to the story that's being told in the Civilization IV PitBoss game I'm running. You can act in-character here, but it's not required or even encouraged.

PC Games / Civ4 Pit Boss Game
« on: March 19, 2008, 01:33:59 pm »
Game started!

Storytelling thread

So I'm going to be running a PitBoss game on my computer-turned-server. The game starts at 1900 GMT on Wednesday (EDIT: at the latest).
My goal with this game is to create a non-competitive, immersive, RP-esque Civilization IV PitBoss game played by the forum members that I've grown to trust.

For the sake of searching, I should probably say "Dvorak" without special characters.
===DETAILS===
Technical Mumbo-Jumbo
  • Civilization IV base game v1.74
  • Connection via Hamachi
Maps 'n' modes
  • Standard Size PerfectWorld Map
  • No AI
  • Normal pace
  • Noble
  • PitBoss server
  • 14 hour turn time limit
  • Simultaneous turns
  • Permanent Alliances, normal everything else.
Roleplaying?
  • Play like an actual leader from the time period, basing your actions, especially your wars, on things other than you goal of "winning." Act sort of like an AI player. Get into the mindset that the "game" is a tool to make stories, not a contest of skill.
    Good reasons:
    • your civ's religion
    • trades/offerings
    • history
    • economic need
    • your made-up society and government
    Bad reasons:
    • genocidal policy
    • being a looney barbarian
    • saying your political leader got shot
    • 9/11
    • trying to "win the game"
  • Establish a persona for your civilization and/or leaders. Keep it for at least five turns or so, and stick to it!
  • Storytelling outside of gameplay (in the sister thread) is neither required nor encouraged. Still, it's a good way to do diplomacy and can be quite fun.
  • You must have a very good explanation or story for sending your civilization to war.
  • You must have an extremely good reason for breaking an agreement between you and another player.
  • I will step in and punish players who are extremely unsportsmanlike and contrary to this game's goal for long periods of time. Beyond that it's peer pressure and honor system.
  • This is based on fictional history, not real history.
  • Play like your leader, but don't talk like him/her. This isn't an in-character affair.
Rules of Conduct
  • This isn't Starcraft. Don't get ready for wars before you even see your opponent, don't attack Settlers who aren't intruding on your territory. No fighting before 3500 BC.
  • Don't double-move when you are involved in a war, even if you aren't doing the fighting. Simultaneous turns are on so that the game moves quickly, but don't betray this convenience.
  • Check this thread OFTEN
  • Try to log in from 1600-1900 GMT on Saturdays and Sundays so we can get a ton of turns out of the way. Tell us if you can't come so we don't have to wait for you
  • It's no big deal if you are going out of town for a bit, just tell us a few days in advance. We're all busy (I'm normally busy but am spring vacation now)
Players
  • Aybraus - Random
  • Brandonazz - Catherine
  • josasa - Mansa Musa
  • tomasgaquino - Isabella
  • Plank of Wood - Genghis Khan

HOW TO JOIN THE GAME:
Get Hamachi and Civilization 4 v1.74. Then PM me for our hamachi network, password, and other things.

Music / National Anthems, good and bad
« on: February 28, 2008, 08:39:52 pm »
Good:
-Mexico (it's a fight song. An epic fight song)
-USSR (why don't we sing before government meetings?)

Bad:
-USA (it's about war but is slow-paced. Also impossible to sing)
-Japan (it's as if every game composer is making up for this sucky song)
