Console Games / Are "hardcore" games a dying breed?
« on: February 13, 2010, 12:42:47 pm »
(I'm not sure if this is the appropriate section, nor if this already has a topic, if either are true, please direct me to the correct area)

I was recently pursuing GamingSteve's twitter, and came across an interesting article he mentioned

He not only proclaims everyone in said article is correct, but that malstorm is one of the very few gaming journalists who "get the industry".

So, what are your guys thoughts? Hard core gaming totally dead? Casual gaming actually going to die? Something inbetween? Yes, no, maybe so?

I ask here, because it involves GamingSteve, and I found this board to have rather intelligent discussions about gaming. I'm wondering all your thoughts on this...

Console Games / Re: Chrono Trigger sequel poll

Yeah, I know what you mean Gec, which is why I said I can always dream with my idea of a Chrono sequel, (Ala a Chrono Trigger 2, not a Chrono Cross) given I am sure what I want will not happen hehe. Though, it is easily recognizable that the common reaction is that Cross was a disappointment in terms of a sequel (1up I believe featured it twice in that regard)  , so maybe not? Still, the poll is about what people would want, rather than what is expected to happen.

My views on Cross as a standalone game are fairly common, that it is alright game, but not a good sequel.

I would say it was more of an indirect sequel, it was a Chrono Trigger Sequel in the same sense Star Trek DS9 is a follow up to the original series. A Chrono Trigger (though, I would call it more of a Chrono Cross fanpage) fanpage put it in better words.

¨The other instance in which the game might legitimately be called a sequel is the case of convenience. It might be a reasonable convenience to call Chrono Cross a sequel, if one is simply referring to that game’s major plot events and standing in the Chrono universe. "Sequel" is an easier concept for people to digest, and most people aren’t going to care about the distinction anyway; thus, most of the time it hardly matters. However, if pressed -- or if the issue is important -- it would be better to give the more nuanced explanation that Chrono Cross is only a sequel of the most indirect of sorts, and that properly it is an addendum of Chrono Trigger,¨

I think you mean an direct sequel, since they have not made one yet? Cross was an indirect sequel, vaguely at that also I believe. But I probably just misinterpreted what you typed, sometimes I do that  :D

To define what I mean by the choices

Direct Sequel, think Star Wars, Terminator, Lord of the rings, etc.

Indirect Sequel, think some of the Star Trek movies (like star trek 4 as a sequel to star trek 2), AVP movies in relation to the predator and alien movies, Chrono Cross (well, I guess that is a good example as any for this topic  ;D )

I would personally prefer a direct sequel myself, not in the vein of Chrono Cross, but in the vain that star wars episode 5 was to episode 4, (basically a true chrono trigger 2) but that is just me. (Hey, I can always dream  ;) )

I know sometimes this topic can get heated, so please, no flame wars, no attacking anyone´s opinions please. I just am curious as to Chrono Trigger fans opinions on what direction a future sequel should take place.

Console Games / Re: Xbox 360 refurbished scam?
« on: July 27, 2008, 11:36:49 pm »
Never buy anything refurbished or used...I bought a ps2 from a group like them the thing blew up when I turned it on. Then I got a second one and that one destroyed my cd's inside of it. Lastly the third one had cut wires. Your better off spending the extra cash for a brand new system.

I bought my second gamecube refurbished (first one broke) and ps1 used, and never had any problems with them. However I know not to trust this site, I just wanted to see peoples thoughts on it. Funny how this site and its wii affiliate are advertising here.

I have not found anything about this site indicating it is a scam, but I am sure it is. Still, would like to see what you guys think and could dig up on it.

I have to say, for the first time, I feel a bit worried about Spore. It seems the sandbox experience is going to be a bit minimized in the game, and the start off with goals and slowly go into ultimate sandbox is now not that, but only the ¨easier modes are sandboxes¨. It also seems the space mode is now less about playing as long as you want, and now more goal oriented, but I guess even after you beat the space mode, they will still let you play as you want I would imagine, so maybe I am just over reacting.  Regardless, I am sure I will still love it, just a bit worried.

I know, but they said before you could play afterwards, and they always talked about how the space mode would be infinite in the sense you could play as long as you want in it checking out other user submitted material in the universe.

I have to disagree with him that RTS campaigns tend to be compelling, I have often loved RTS single player campaigns, and loved getting the maps and playing them with AI players, (assuming the AI is good) like Sins of a Solar Empire.

Also, the question in regard to sandbox mode, by his answer it no longer seems the Space Mode goal is to be unlimited play..., but that could just be me.

Spore: General / Grobb in extracted documents?
« on: July 07, 2008, 02:07:11 pm »
I heard that more information on the Grobb was released in the extracted documents from the creature creator, but I can't see any info about them. Am I just missing it, or is that not true?

Amazing that with just 25% of the parts there's so much to do, can't wait until I get my hands on 100%

I am no longer in this. Use the other guys T.

Alright then.  Kregaaron, can you post the orrigional creautre file?

Here it is.

The reason I didn't post that earlier is because it doesn't look much like a T from that angle, but I hope it is still usable.
