Spore: General / Released for the holiday season?
« on: August 12, 2006, 01:08:29 pm »
This isn't a topic about whether you believe it will be released by Christmas or not, it's about whether you want it to be.

I, for one, am opposed to this idea. I want Spore to be released when it's ready. If they might have to take out underwater civs, who knows what else they have to take out? I hope Will Wright stays on the project until he's confident that it's good, and EA doesn't force him to finish prematurely.

Either that or release an expansion pack within a couple months that includes all the crap they didn't put in.

First things first: www.oldeenglish.org

Next things next: Absolutely hilarious sketch comedy. They recently took a long break, but now they're cranking them out every day (except Tuesday. **** Tuesday).

Here's one that I found particularly hilarious: The First Date

You're going to want to peruse the site and watch every video twice. It's worth it.

But be warned, there is some adult language. So go in there and watch what you want if you're man enough.

Movies / Fight Club

There has been discussion about Fight Club, but never a topic about it.

I saw it for the first time last night on Spike TV. That was messed up! I'm gonna need to see that again.

And since this is one of those movies where one spoiler can ruin everything:

PC Games / Conqueror!
« on: July 01, 2006, 08:09:52 am »
This is in the Free PC Games thread, but it's not a game you can jump right into. So here's a topic for it.

It's a multiplayer territorial expansion game. It's similar to Rome, but it's much simpler and therefore, much less frustrating.

www.conquerorgame.com

  • The red numbers in your province represent the number of armies you have
  • To move armies, you can either click the province you want the armies to move from, a) then shift-click the one you want to move to, or b) drag to the province you want to move to.
  • There are production types. You can see these types on the gray bar on the left side of your screen. You can change these by pressing the "change" button next to the production type. You can also speed up production by purchasing the production for the specified amount of gold under the "buy" button. They are
Build Farms- Will increase the population of the province by 10,000 peasants. The more peasants you have, the more they can build in a turn
  • Advance Culture- Will help your peasants to build things more quickly
  • Build armies- Should be self-explanatory
  • Send diplomat- Will make the peasants in the province you send them to more loyal, along with all surrounding settlements[/li[li]
  • Build fortification- Will give you province a defensive bonus if attacked.
  • Levy Taxes- You will gain the specified amount of gold at the end of the turn
[li]The name of the game is to get as many territories as you can[/li]
[li]You will need to pay your armies in winter. The more armies you have, and the farther they are away, the more you have to pay them. You can see how much you have to pay them from the "info" button below the yellow box on the left side of the screen, along with your income.[/li]
[li]If you don't pay your armies in winter, they will desert you, which could leave you up **** creek.[/li]
[li]If there is no path from your capital to your provinces, then the armies in those provinces will desert in winter, which could also leave you up said creek.[/li]
[li]If you lose your capital, you lose control of your treasury and you will have no money and no way to collect money. This will screw you over in winter, but the same rule applies to your enemies, so go for their capital first. >:D[/li]
[li]There are rebellions, so make sure you either have garrison in your provinces or spend some money on diplomats to make them dedicated to you. The best way to make them dedicated, IMO, is to have garrison in there for a while then build farms and culture until they're happy. OTHER PROVINCES CAN REBEL TO JOIN YOUR FACTION, so I'd recommend spending some money on diplomats to make them want to be with you[/li]
[li]A province can support as many armies as the population of the province is. For example, if the province has 80,000 peasants, then 8 armies can be stationed there free of cost.[/li]
[li]Fortifications are a good thing, castles give you an additional 200% bonus to your defense. So if you have 10 armies in your province with a castle, it's like you have 30 armies there to defend. If you attack out of that province, though, you'd still only have ten.[/li]
[/list]

That's all I can think of right now, post your questions or comments on the game here so I can answer them, or just look at the help file on the top of the page.

Those are the quick and dirty rules, in order to get good you'll have to know more about the mechanics of the game. Have fun!

BTW, I misspelled one word in this whole post.

These are the actual instructions, for if you want to actually know how to play well: http://www.conquerorgame.com/help.html

IF YOU MAKE A GAME, CALL IT GAMINGSTEVE AND SET THE PASSWORD TO SPORE

This way, we'll all know what's going on. Oh, and make it an infinite time limit, with 1:45 turn limit.

Everything Else / School's finally out!!!
« on: June 29, 2006, 03:13:58 pm »
Now what? I am bored to death in here. What should I do instead?

I need to talk to actual people, and to get out of this room. Maybe move my legs before I get a blood clot in them?

So, the point of this thread is: What should I do with my summer? Hell, I just need to know what to do for the next week before I go on a trip to Boston with my family.

Any suggestions?

Everything Else / Married to the Sea

A bunch of random and whacky comics.

There are others, but they have swearing so I'm not going to post them. Some very funny comics if you don't take them too seriously.

Spore: General / Tube creatures?
« on: April 23, 2006, 06:19:07 am »
I'm worried that we'll only be able to make creatures that look like tubes. If you look at the willosaur, he's just a tube that tapers, perfectly circular all around (with different diameters, but still). Look at your own chest, it's like a flattened tube. And the hoppies and splodeys weren't any better, they were just too small/ too spherical to notice this. Do you think that the game will be able to allow us to change the basic shape of the torso, and how would this tool work?

Also, what about having animals that sharply taper? What if you want to simulate a segmented body, but you can't because of the fluid way the game makes the torso when you adjust the size of a rib bone? It changes all the rib bones around it, and through the whole body, to make it look fluid.

Spore: General / My honeymoon with Spore
« on: April 13, 2006, 08:01:33 pm »
I forgot how awesome this game is gonna be. For some reason, I've just thought of it as a far-off novelty that's fun to think about, but won't be fun to play. Maybe it's because E3 is right around the corner, but recently I've realized just how incredibly awesome this will be. I never thought through how I would play the game, I've always just thought about fragments of the gameplay experience. I recently thought about the sequence of the game, the ownership of your creature, and the personal pride you get out of the colonization in space. It's probably because I played Conqueror today, and I was exhilarated through the whole thing. It reminded me that Spore is the same thing, just on a much grander scale and it gives you more ownership over your game.

I saw this movie yesterday, and I loved it. It was intelligent, but still had a lot of exciting action. Also, a buttload of suspense. My only gripe, the fight scenes were all shaky and my eyes went crossed.

I would highly recommend this movie. I liked it a lot.

Spore: General / Slavery
« on: February 22, 2006, 08:55:34 am »
Interspecies slavery. I'm for it. It would be cool to have the splodeys and the hoptarts working for you, like draft animals. You could also abduct sentient creatures and have them research things for your own race. What do you guys think? What is the potential of slavery? Will it be in the game?

That's something I wouldn't half mind seeing in Spore.

Movies / Stay Alive
« on: January 28, 2006, 12:17:23 pm »
A movie about video games, but not a movie about a particular one, which means it might not suck.

In this movie, some kids are playing a horror game called "Stay Alive," but when they die in the game, they die in real life in the same way. Looks pretty interesting, I'll probably see it.

Any thoughts?
