Console Games / 360 won the console war?
« on: February 24, 2007, 11:14:48 pm »
It's very late right now and I haven't posted on this website for a long while, but I think it's the best place to discuss my ideas about gaming first hand. I'm not going to list the reasons now because I'm rather tired, but I believe that Microsoft has won the console wars. Agree? Disagree?

I'll follow up later with a more detailed explaination.

PC Games / ATI burns Nvidia.. here we go again.
« on: July 26, 2006, 03:52:13 pm »
Official Statement from ATI

Nvidia has seen the writing on the wall, and doesn't like what it's saying.... Nvidia's words are bravado, designed to confuse the market while the company tries to find a way to compete now that it's standing alone.

But personally, I think that's just ATI trying to talk trashm because Nvidia has been dominating recently in the gaming market.

PC Games / Game Preview: Timeshift
« on: July 23, 2006, 12:19:26 pm »
For those of you who are first-person shooter lovers, you’re in luck, because a game called Timeshift is coming out and it’s going to suck out hours and hours of your life. Due to the fact that they changed publishers, the game actually took a turn for the better and looks really promising. This weekend, a demo of the game was shown by Ben Serviss from Saber Interactive and I have to say, the game looks a lot sweeter when you actually see it being played

First of all, as you might have guessed from the name, the game involves the manipulation of time, which allows the player to go into “bullet time”. What’s different between this game and other games like F.E.A.R. and Prince of Persia is that it’s not just a “do over” button, but you can use it to get over obstacles and kick ass at the same time. For example, you can shoot down an elevator, step on it, then press reverse so that the elevator goes back up and you will be taken up with the elevator. Or, you can pause, shoot some explosive barrels near a barred gate, step back and press play, and watch the fireworks.

Another thing that impressed me a lot was the reaction of the AI to the time shifting. One of the cool things you can do is pause, walk up to the enemy and take away his weapon, the press play, and he’ll look all confused for a sec and might even surrender. Also, if you are spotted by an enemy, you can pause, walk behind him, and after you press play again, he’ll be going to the direction he was headed to before but since you are not there, the NPC will appear to be confused and will look around for you. Obviously, you can shoot the enemy in pause, watch him explode afterwards, reverse, and do it again in 7 different ways, but I don’t think the AI minds that.

The game is due out on September 5th for the 360 and P.C. with 11 single-player missions spanning over 35 levels (whoa that’s long). They are also planning of releasing multiplayer function with 7 modes, 14 maps and 8 different classes, which will be interesting to see how it’s going to work out. The game looked really pretty too, with cool bullets frozen in the air effects and a nice synergy of some Russian and American art styles (partially because most of the actual production is based in St. Petersburg).

PC Games / Mythic Entertainment - Aquired by EA

Bleh... Now I'm kinda doubtful about Warhammer online... I never liked EA too much. No offense they produce good games, but warhammer online could definitly go in a different direction.

PC Games / The Decline of Video Games
« on: June 23, 2006, 08:40:12 pm »
Games are on the decline, and many of us gamers know it.

If someone made a slideshow of ground-breaking games, it will go in the order from stuff like tetris, to mario, to mario 64, to half life...

But from the past couple of years, the only game that might slightly fit into this ground-breaking category is Wow... and it's really not the greatest thing ever.

Lets take Oblivion as an example, i went through that in less than five days. I don't regret uninstalling it. And its branded with one of the greatest games of the year.

Other small time, but yet fun games are entertaining.. but their value just downgrades after I finish them up. People are trying to expand the gaming industry, but what they are doing is not getting more gamers, but rather just a presentation of new technology. Spore sounds promising, but seriously, not all people like things like sims and as crazy as I might sound, I do not think that game will even have as much of an impact to my gaming life as to stuff like starcraft.

Now, I know a lot of you out there will disagree with me. Go ahead, I hope that one of you will convince me that gaming is what it use to be: a revolution and not just a fad.
