Joel Veitch of RatherGood fame is releasing his band's first single, "Twister" in a couple of days with the money he was given in a settlement from Coca-Cola (who stole one of his cartoons).

Everything Else / Cricket World Cup
« on: March 19, 2007, 08:56:53 am »
I've been following various matches on and off, but there are some interesting things happening.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHzKdBJBc8o

Ireland beating Pakistan (like, WTF?) on St. Paddy's day - luck of the Irish I suppose.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5eYZOp1VzQ

Holland really sucking (and having six sixes hit off them in one over; first time that's happened since the 60s).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs4KAQDBwNo

I need to start watching some more of this now I'm home.

EDIT:
For the Americans.

I went to see them at the Brixton Academy in London the other day - I have to say I was blown away by the atmosphere. Trent Reznor knows what he's doing, musically speaking, and the gig was generally awesome (except for the support band, Ladytron, who weren't my sort of music).

We got to hear some great stuff - Survivalism and Hurt were possibly my two favourite tracks of the night.

So, the results are in. Pity the game was marred by Terry's injury and the brawl at the end. Anyone manage to catch it? I've been incommunicado for the last couple days so this passed me by.

Everything Else / The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect
« on: February 22, 2007, 12:34:09 pm »
I don't think this has been posted here before. It might go in Books, but it's not exactly a book (more a short online story). I found this some years ago, and recently came across it again after trawling my bookmarks; it's a neat little short story which I recommend people read.

Thoughts? Personally I'm rather sceptical of the concept of an imminent technological singularity (especially one that requires such flagrant violations of the laws of physics), but it's still a fun story.

Everything Else / Plasma Pong (and sandbox art)
« on: January 29, 2007, 09:48:28 am »
Okay, this is a game I discovered about a year ago (I think), and it's languishing at page 6 of the Free PC Games thread. I downloaded the latest version today, just to see what has changed, and it's pretty awesome. I've been playing with the sandbox mode for hours.

http://www.plasmapong.com/

In the basic game, it's like Pong, only you can control the flow of plasma through your paddle - you can inject plasma into the field or you can suck it in to hold the ball and release it in a burst. The playing field follows the rules of fluid dynamics, so it gets pretty hectic after a while and you have to pay attention to flows and vortices.

If that wasn't cool enough, it has a sandbox mode where you can play around with the fluid (there are loads of options). After playing with it for ages I've discovered a way to generate unstable fractals in the fluid (turn on jello and vorticity, and set the view to velocity grid, and click briefly with the swirl tool). There's so much cool art you can make with this; here's something that demonstrates what I've been playing with recently.

Everything Else / Social Networking Sites
« on: January 17, 2007, 12:17:11 pm »

So, which social networking sites do you use? Why? Which are the best ones?

I use Facebook myself, if only because everyone in Oxford is on it and everybody uses it for everything like events/parties, groups and messaging and the like. I've not used Myspace or any of the listed others because I don't see the point (plus very few of my friends use it).

Music / Fantasy Band
« on: December 29, 2006, 12:00:50 am »
Okay, so this is a game which I've seen elsewhere, and which is pretty fun (it's partially duplicated in the "GS Musicology 101" thread, but I feel it deserves one to itself). The idea here is to put down your dream combinations of musicians (you may do more than one). They're getting together for one album - you can pick the style/name/whatever. Just be creative, it doesn't have to be musically brilliant, just interesting.

Band Name:
Genre/Style:
Members & their instruments:
Describe the album:

Here's my example.

Band Name:
Seventh Salvation (I love band-name generators)
Genre/Style:
Soaring and apocalyptic prog metal
Members:
Matt Bellamy, guitar and vocals
Herman Li, guitar
John Petrucci, guitar
Chris Squire, bass
Rick Wakeman, keyboard
Bill Ward, drums
The Album
Self titled, the album would experiment with soaring and expansive keyboards and guitars for the first half, before plunging into a heavier metal style at the end. Written by Bellamy and Wakeman. Probably wouldn't be a commercial success, but might gather a cult following.

I'll post some more ideas when I get them.

Everything Else / Truthiness: Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year?
« on: December 01, 2006, 04:00:57 am »

Guess what. Merriam-Webster are having a vote for word of the year. And as we're all Colbert fans here, why not help make "truthiness" that word?

Follow the following link to the M-W site, and type "truthiness" in the suggestion box.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/info/06words.htm

Or, alternatively, you could vote for wikiality. Whichever floats your boat.
