in these cases, it's a good idea to get yourself a nice acute case of CSD (Compulsive Saving Disorder)... ;D

happened to me today too... had to remake it from scratch... twice :P

maybe there should be an autoback feature...

I would be irritated if someone just stole it without giving credit b/c it is just not proper etiquette...

That's all i'm saying... it's more a social problem than anything else...

i just hope that maxis comes up with a way to solve this problem... even a subtle change as tagging the original creator of a creature would put every worry to rest...

what if you nuke your OWN homeworld??

maybe that could lead to some interesting stuff... like roaming about on a spaceship that contains the last few specimens of your entire once-great civilization...

wow... now that i think about it... i think i wanna do just that when i get the game!! maybe pretend you're some kind of evil genius cientist that has plans to obliterate your so-called decaying society... then vaporize the entire planet and go repopulate a new world order somewhere else...

hmmm... interesting

 ;D

Never has SimLife, or Creatures, ore even Evolution :P

but i did have Sim Earth!! i think i was too young to understand the purpose of the game... but i still had fun with it!!
i managed to create a planet that support intelligent life... then i changed some atmospheric setting.. and it all turned into a dry desert!! ;D
lots of fun!!

i was 10 back then.... i don't remember much of it... but if i dig deep into my mess of old software i might actually find the original floppy

being a compulsive hoarder is good at times!!

Cheers

it's not a matter of legal rights or your intellectual property i think... it's the moral offense behind such actions that deeply annoys me...
it's the fact that someone is picking my creature as from a catalog, and deliberately taking credit for it, so that others will think he was the original creator... it's just morally wrong  :P

it doesn't matter if i don't have the rights to my creation, or that it is the property of EA... the problem is that SOMEONE out there thinks he's too smart by doing this and will probably get away with it unless he's dumb enough to keep the tags as they are... this kind of people are despicable to say the least, and i hope they fail miserably in all aspects of their lives

actually now that i think about it, the thing that most disturbs me, is not the creature theft in itself, but the fact that people low enough to do something like this exist...

now, until they come up with a feature to at least tag the original creator of something, the best we can do is bash these guys through comments and downvoting... until it becomes such an offense as team killing is in other games

creature theft is Spore's TK

Spore: General / Re: Block Painting in building/vehicle editors?

glad to hear it's still in... painting buildings with predefined materials like in the Creature Editor wouldn't be nearly as flexible
i hope it's in for vehicles and OFUs as well...

Spore: General / Block Painting in building/vehicle editors?
« on: July 14, 2008, 04:21:07 pm »
this just occurred to me...

i think i remember from waaay back, some talk about block painting on the building editor... i think it was one of the very first videos that had something like that there...

block painting was a way to paint buildings and (possibly) vehicles, that allowed you to choose a color/material, and paint an area (or block) of the building with it... kinda like a bucket fill tool in photoshop, but in 3D  ;)

then i got thinking... it's been a while since anyone talked about this... and i started wondering if it's still even in the game... and i don't think this has ever been discussed in depth

so what do you guys think?

Awesome work there Darcie!! you've got some really good pieces of information on those pages! lots of stuff i had never seen  :o

Keep it up!!

oh and as a suggestion, you might wanna add links to each page in your enciclopedia on that left tab there, so we can browse through pages more easily... but that's just a suggestion.. you're doing one hell of a job there!!

Cheers... and Thanks!!

one thing i would REALLY like, although at this point might be a little far-fetched, would be being able to choose an angle for the png file for your creature... sometimes, that default angle really makes a creature look bad... and that picture is the creature's greeting card... i wouldn't download an ugly-pictured creature thinking... 'hmm maybe it's the angle that's bad'

another thing i kind of disapprove with the pictures, is that they don't give any idea of the size of the creature... it always scales to fit... i mean... it's not really a bad thing... but it's not good either...  ::) there should be SOME indication of scale...

maybe giving the option for the user to upload more pictures to the creature page would be a good way around this... no reworking needed

you can already snap the pictures from the CC... but the only thing it lets you do with it is send postcards... that's lame... why not upload them to the 'pedia?

They've had the Maya exporter since the beginning.  And that would bring everything over, animation and rig included.  But when you do get it into a 3d program, don't expect it to be 100,000 times better just because you can use raytracing.  You'll still have the low-res textures, and it will still be pretty much low-poly.  You'll have all the parts being separate from the body, causing seams in the model and textures.  Except for having better lighting and shadows, you'll still have a games model.  You have to think of it as such and go from there.

actually, i think the maya export option is out... i read the EULA for the CC and it states that you cannot remove content from inside the game... so i don't think it'll be available as an in-game function...
however, this guy, whose name i can't remember managed to extract the generated mesh from the CC... and once your creature is created, it is treated like a single mesh... that means that although you will get interpenetrating parts on your model, they will have their UV coordinates already set meaning that once you apply the textures, there will be no visible seam... the texture will be as hi-res as the game itself can produce though... and i don't think there will be any animations... since they are done procedurally and are likely not stored anywhere

The Teratop

Backstory - This is another one of my 'cargo' beasts... a huge creature that the closest thing it would ever come to being civilized, is being domesticated by another species... they're big, slow herbivores that spend all day in the pastures.. and make good meat, if you can hunt them down... btw, i'm not sure if the name i gave him doesn't exist already... if it does, let me know so i can change it  ;)

Description - Teratops are dumb as doorknobs.
Most of the time they're bored out of their minds. A busy day for a Teratop is when the grass it eats is moving with the wind. It is very stressful for a Teratop to keep up with such fast-paced action.

I've heard in recent interveiws that they have greatly improved the leggless animations for the final game.  I do wish they would release a CC patch soon though.

ooh that's great news!! here's hoping for a CC patch... not that it really matters anyways... Spore is less than 2 months away now  :)

this is a neat trick... i wish they would post videos of actually making it instead of videos of the final result.....

i don't go for glitched creatures much... but i think hovering creatures could use of this bug to remove that horrible slug squirming animation

Cheers
