Spore: General / Re: New Spore logo: HQ
« on: February 18, 2008, 05:45:37 am »
that's what worries me...

this new logo makes Spore look like it was made for babies  :P what's up with that new bubbly font?

i don't like it... not a bit (and i'm glad to see that others agree with me... i thought i was the only one ;))

i realized that the GUI changes significantly as you move from one stage to another... that would explain the many different versions we are seeing

Spore: General / Impressions about the new screenshots

hi again...

i was going through the most recent screenshots of Spore, and i noticed some interesting stuff...

first of all, the GUI appears to have been completely redesigned, which IMO is a very good thing... i was fearing that Spore was on a downhill path to a 'The Sims' like style... but it seems they've sprung out of that

also the new architectural styles in those new shots were really refreshing... until now, i only found pictures of rounded, cartoonish looking 'bubble-buildings', and i was starting to think that the whole visual of the game would stick to that...
now there are more 'realistic' (although stylized) cities and buildings in these shots, which, for me, are very welcome additions

take a look at this shot here... it illustrates my thoughts much better than i can voice them:

i'm very happy that spore is taking this turn into what IMO is a much better visual solution

EDIT: one bad thing i just noticed is the lack of shadows... hopefully they'll get that working before the game is out

Spore: General / Re: Creature missions?

you only progress when you click the egg.

this is great  :), the last thing i wanted was to be hurled into another stage without being ready for it

i think i remember seeing one of the early spore videos demonstrate this (not explicitly though...)
i remember seeing that 6 legged yellow-ish creature sneaking into a pack of other creatures to steal an egg from their nest or something
or was it the other way around? i'm not too sure

the point is that i do recall seeing creatures other than your own roaming about in packs, so there definately is some logic to what other species are doing

i don't think that after all the effort maxis put into this whole 'eco-system' thing, they would let their creatures roam around erratically
actually, now that i think of it, i remember Will Wright talking about food chains and balanced ecosystems in the very first spore video...

i honestly believe there must be a high level of AI-driven behaviours for you to see and interact, if not, Spore will be a major dissapoitment for me, at least during the creature phase at least

actually it is a countdown for the spore launch date... it is scripted to get your pc time and calculate the remaining days to sep 7
that's why it needs to be flash   ;)

Everything Else / Flash signature

Hi everyone

i made myself a little spore banner in flash, and i want to use it as my signature... i noticed there's a BBCode option to add flash to a post, so i figured since signatures also accept BBCode, i could use it to have my little banner...
but all i see is a hyperlink that points to a page with my banner on it... isn't there any way to embed it into the post?

Spore: General / Re: How many days?
« on: February 13, 2008, 07:53:00 am »
i first found out about Spore around march 2006 that makes about 690 days for me, give or take a few

we still have 204 days:11 hours:08 minutes :2 seconds to go as of this post (GMT-3 here)  ::)

that would make a 894 day wait for me overall

Everything Else / Re: Hypercube: a 4d game

i think that hypercube would be a lot easier to visualize if it weren't just a wireframe object.... it would make a lot more sense if it were shaded...

hmm and for those having trouble using the crosseyed view, try this:

hold up your thumb in front of the monitor;
focus the thumb instead of the screen;
now move your thumb back and forth until the duplicate images on the screen merge into one (careful not to lose focus on the thumb)
after that try to look at the middle image on the screen, without shifting focus again
when you manage to focus the single 3d image, it'll appear to hover midway of the monitor and your head, then it gets easier to hold focus
then just try not to look at anything else to not lose it.

i've got a release date prediction which, IMO, is the most reliable one i could find so far...

one of my teachers in college (i study game design here) actually works for EA (he's a marketing guy for EA Brazil)
so i couldn't hold myself and went to ask him

he said that they're antecipating a release around early April 08, give or take a couple of months (i'm adding a buffer zone and expecting it sometime around May, June), to be more precise, his actual words were 'after this fiscal year' (which ends in March 31st)

he couldn't tell me for sure, but he said they were going to start planning marketing strategies for Spore around January (now)...

i know there are numerous other sources giving all sorts of different release predictions, but for me at least, this is as close to an official source i can get, and it's the one i choose to rely on until a more official word comes around, so i'm gonna stick with that for now

Everything Else / Hypercube: a 4d game
« on: January 21, 2008, 08:23:28 am »

i was looking around the net and came across this hypercube game thing...

it's a very simple game... the challenge here is trying to figure it out in 4D mode...
try playing it in 3D mode, then attempt wrapping your brain around a 4 dimension space (or hyperspace for that matter...)

very interesting indeed....
