ok i changed all the misspelled terms so they're correct now (steganography  ;) )

thanks for clearing that up...

as most of us, i'm just relaying information that i've read somewhere else... so a few bits may get lost in the transfer  ;)

Cheers

yeah i did something like that as well... there's no easy way around this...

i removed all my creatures from the folder and reloaded the game... it loaded fine... and i was full of duplicates
then i deleted one by one all the duplicates and old files that remained...

then i dropped my creatures back in... it worked...

but now some of them didn't make it in the game due to creature disappearing bug... now i'm going one by one dragging them in and resaving so at least i'll get an organized 'pedia when it's all over...  ::)

Cheers

ahh well, it makes more sense that way  ::)

steganographing the creature onto the picture always sounded a little insane for me... isn't that like... cold-war spy stuff?

Spore: General / One creature is causing the CC to crash
« on: July 18, 2008, 08:35:33 pm »
hello everyone

i just did the reindex fix for the missing creatures... now a new problem has come up

apparently one of the creatures in my sporepedia is bugged somehow, and everytime the game tries to load it, it crashes to desktop
i don't even need to open it... when i scroll down the sporepedia, the moment that creature is called in, the CC crashes... the problem is that there is no way for me to know which creature is causing, because i can't see it's picture before the crash

this has happened to me before, but i think the missing creature bug might have cancelled it out (go figure :P)

has anyone ever had this problem?? is it fixable?

Cheers

have you guys been running the EADM at all?

The doctor told me to stay away from things like that since they're bad for my health  ::)

seriously now, was there a fix?

They store the information in the PNG using metadata, basically they close the info for the image and store the info for the creature after that so it doesn't affect the image (it's on another layer).

actually... it's not on the metadata section...
apparently, the creature data is steganographically embedded in the image itself... it appears the first bytes of every pixel contain creature data, instead of image data...

there was a thread about this shortly after the CC came out... people were analyzing how creature data was stored... and found that the metadata section is not where the creature is stored... that is... as far as i know... maybe there has been some breakthrough there that i didn't hear about... in that case, my information might be outdated

if you read the CC credits to the end, you'll see that they recorded the sounds on location (there's even a list of locations where they got the sounds) so it's very possible that they got some background noise in their samples and that made it's way into the game

other than that... your pc speakers can pickup radio stations sometimes, and if the volum is very loud, you can sometimes hear them quite clearly... but i don't think that's what's happening here... it's probably background noise in the samples

btw, creature sounds are not procedural... they're pre-recorded

well, from what i've read, it appears they're embedding the information into the image using a process called steganography
it appears that the first byte in every pixel of the .png file is related to creature info, and not the image itself

there isn't much creature data being generated by the CC, it basicaly contains every variable you can tweak in the game.... the rest is generated procedurally on load.

it truly is amazing... i was surprised when i first got my hand on the CC to find that the only file needed was the thumbnail of the creature
and i wonder why they did it this way... they could have included the creature data in the metadata section of the .png file... or created a proprietary file format... i guess they did it to reduce the server load... or to optimize file transfers... i don't know... i just know it's awesome  8)

Awesome work there!!! your creatures have just the right balance between realism and alien-ism... exactly the way i would expect a Spore creature to be... not too far out to the point you just won't believe in it, but not too down-to-earth common fodder as well

i will be definately getting your sporecasts!!! your creatures are the best i've seen!

Spore: General / Re: Poll: Content Ownership
« on: July 18, 2008, 11:06:06 am »
it's as simple as this: it's not a legal problem, it's a SOCIAL problem

of course EA owns the content produced in spore... that's not the case... but don't go as far as saying that there's no credit involved for the player... if that were true, creatures wouldn't have the author name along with them now, would they? let alone the featuring of creatures and the celebration of those who created them.

the author does receive credit for his creatures, and it is a part of the game... stealing a creature is essentially 'cheating' in Spore, for you are creating a situation where you are being gloryfied for something you didn't do, and making the game less fun for those directly involved.

imagine if your creature got stolen and the thief got featured for it...

the bottomline is: stealing creatures without giving credit is CHEATING in Spore, and as all cheats, needs to be addressed in the proper form

a word of warning for those who are running on windowed mode... the close button on top of the window will shut down the CC without confirmation... be careful going near there

I think they've created a whole new genre of pornography now... Spore based porn  :P

i wonder how depraved you have to be to actually get off on that...  ::)

on second thought... i don't think i wanna know

The Hoggamott

Backstory - For some reason, this creature took A LOT of work to complete... maybe because the slightest change in the legs would cause the animation to disrupt abnormally... or possibly due to the fact that the CC crashed twice while it remained unsaved... or just simply because i wouldn't stop tweaking it... i must have changed the colors like 15 times...
anyways, i had this idea of making a creature with a leg configuration similar to the landing gear of a Harrier jet... and the Ungulot head was just screaming to get eyes like that... so there he is... i'm really satisfied with him now... i really want to play Creature Stage with this guy... even though he's just another middle-food-chain herbivore

Description - Hoggamots have a very unusual tandem configuration, with little legs out the sides to help them maintain their balance. They are easy-going herbivores, but they get really upset when others try to ride them. Which is too bad for they make a very cool ride.
