The real power play is to short bitcoin right now and wait until 2020 when it's worth three cents.

Yeah every time bitcoin being worth a bajillion now is mentioned I think of this thread.

But the bitcoin bubble popping is inevitable. Once the vast majority of bitcoins are owned by a few investors, as the trend appears to be going, the fact that they are based on just speculation and functionally are worthless are going ruin it. Maybe that won't happen in the next few years or maybe it will and maybe we all still have time to get filthy rich off of it, but that's what is eventually going to happen.

Yeah the tl;dr is "Germany wins WW1, ect" which comes off a bit Wehrabooish, which is sad because it's way more than that.

The reality is a game that has a trillion times more depth and flavour than the base game, every country having unique paths (ie. actual internal politics rather than HOI4's "I'm Venezuela in the 1940s, I guess"), and a pretty engaging 'story' if you want to call it that. I don't want to spoil too much if you want to jump right in and experience the thrill of looking at America in 1937 and trying to figure out what the hell is going on, but the basic summary is:

Instead of Germany experiencing the massive social upheaval after WW1 it happened in the Entente (because they lost, duh), and in the '20s the UK and France experienced far-left Communist Syndicalist revolutions. The Entente powers ran away to their colonies - the Dominion of Canada and India for the British, and North Africa for France - and plot their return home. In Russia, the Red Army is defeated by the Whites, and President Kerensky is the only thing holding the Republic together and hopefully nothing bad will ever, ever happen to him. Communist Communard France plans to take on Germany and save the world from the chains of capitalism ect, so hopefully Germany doesn't have a financial crisis or something that might make them vulnerable. A whole bunch of other insane stuff happens later, but I'll let that be a surprise.

The main thing setting apart Kaiserreich from the other Alt History wank mods is that it has about 8 years worth of development since it original came from an older Paradox game, so the main draw is less the novelty and more the huge attention to detail.

Australia voted that gay marriage is ok in a vote that mainly happened because the government was too cowardly to do it themselves.

Yeah! Keep Cornwall under a tight leash!

It has less claim to being its own country than fake countries like Liberland.

The future is independent and also has no Irish protestants or Bosnians.

I was in Barcelona the day after the referendum and during the General Strike.

What is happening is basically Brexit-plus. Catalonia is essentially a very rich region being tired of paying for the poorer regions of Spain. The results of the referendum are iffy, but that's what happens when half the region is trying to stop the referendum and the other half is physically trying to stop it happen. The problem is that it's almost purely nationalistic rather than ideological - both the left and the right want independence (creating the weird situation of communist flag wavers next to football hooligans and actually not punching each other for once), but this means a lot of the arguments for independence are based in "we're Catalan and we want a Catalan country" rather than actually improving Catalonia.

Independence is going to be stained by a series of extremely dodgy referendums (92% in favour at 40% is absolutely not any kind of mandate). Unionism is stained by Madrid being authoritarian. Everything is clucked.
