Wait.  No herbivorous mouths?  Why?

Really, I have no idea. They give you the top two rows in full, but that's it. Row 1 is reptilian/dinasaurian, row 2 is insect, and both are strictly carnivorous.

Agreed, This is what I do too. If you like the unevolved forms of the mouths better, than just choose it and live with the consequence. Forget about the stats... That's not really what this game is all about anyway.

Ah, but Spore is magic, and will mean different things to different people.  :)

I like to design creatures and see what there natural traits are. Sometimes Im surprised just how powerful my creatures end up being. My Lhus Gami turned out to fly and glide and attack and dance and basically do everything extremley well but it was entirely unintended ;D Speaking of I need to put her in my Profile!

Of course, there is certainly something to be said for that approach. Actually, all my creatures have been purely aesthetic up to this point, and will probably remain so for the most part.

I just like the possibility of being able to sneak some more stat points on if you choose to do so. You can even make it a part of the evolution of the creature. Give it a higher bite stat without changing the mouth that you like, for instance, and just say that your creature developed a venomous bite that increased its efficiency.

It's all part of the story, if you make it so.

Having only one mouth is the eye with mess up the bite attack, but it's a good idea.

HOWEVER... not all your creatues need to be lvl20 attack. Full Stop.

Well, the idea is to give it a herbivorous mouth later on.

And I agree that not all creatures need to be maxed out. I'm just pointing out a way to get the look you want and some more stats if it goes with your concept.

So, I've been thinking about parts and how they affect stats. The parts aren't treated as having stats themselves, but rather adding to the base statistic of the entire creature (and, of course, enabling the ability/stat if it isn't already present).

For example, a mouth isn't said to bestow a level 3 bite attack, but rather to ADD 3 to the bite attack. So, if you put a mouth with a +2 bite on the same creature that already has a mouth with a +3 bite attack, you get a bite attack of 5 overall, rather than two separate attacks of differing power.

So, therefore, we are capable of making creature purely for aesthetics, if we think a "weaker" part looks better than a "stronger" part. We just have to get creative!

Take the Proto-Jesterling (seen in my avatar). Now, he's a herbivore, but as the free trial has no herbivorous mouths (foolish), and the editor won't let you save a creature without a mouth, I had to add one, but I don't want it to be seen. So, where is it? Hiding under his two front eyes. I picked the weakest insect mouth, shrunk it as small as possible and rotated it until it was inside the head, then placed eyes over the part that protruded.

So, think of an alternate situation. You want to create a vicious predator, but you don't agree with the editor's limitation that he needs that +5 mouth to have the power you want. You much prefer, say, the +2 mouth, and you REALLY don't want the +5 mouth on your creature (or at least you don't want it visible). All you have to do, then, is take a mouth of +3 or above, hide it on the creature in some way (by shrinking and rotating, putting detail parts around it, whatever), and then put the +2 mouth where you want it. There you go -- powerful bite attack, but it still matches your vision of the creature.

This technique is especially useful if you are like me when it comes to creature creation -- "Simplicity is beautiful". You can get good stats on a creature without bogging it down with parts you'd rather not see.

Of course, I could be wrong about all this. I have not playtested combat or anything. This is just what I have deduced from observing the interplay of parts and stats in the CC.

EDIT: Yes, I forgot about how the game loads creatures appropriate for your power level. Sorry about that.

Hello, everyone!

I know I'm not exactly the most social GSer around, but I still want to show off the stuff I made. I'm proud of what I make. They may not be the best, but as long as I'm happy with them, that's all that matters. If only I could come up with better names...

Most of the time, my motto is "Simplicity is beautiful." I don't like to clutter my creature with a lot of detail parts. Of course, since I'm using the free trial, I don't have too many said parts available to me. Anyway, I experiment more with body and limb configurations. Also, I'm trying to create as many small creatures as I can, as I think the Sporepedia needs some little guys.

(In my defense, this was my very first creature, and I only had a little time with it, so it's not my most polished)

(Even with only half a body, he got the complexity meter in the red)

(Got the idea while just fiddling around with the shapeless mass of creature clay. Made him backwards by accident the first time. I maxed out the complexity meter, unsurprisingly)

(My first attempt at a small creature. I love his eyes. I wish he could jump better)

(So far, the smallest I've gotten. Probably bigger than a hamster. One of my favorites, actually)

Note that, at the moment, I only have the free trial. I didn't preorder the full one because I didn't think it would work on either of my computers, though it turns out I was wrong despite the fact that I don't meet minimum graphical requirements and have to deal with minor glitches here and there. So, anyway, at the moment, all my creatures will have to be carnivores as determined by the eight mouths I get to choose from.

Why in the heck did they give us the full first two tiers of mouths, anyway?

Also at the very end he mentioned "if you give it a pig mouth it'll sound like a pig." 

I hadn't yet heard on what determined the sound the creatures make.

Oh, yeah, I've seen the acoustic effect of a mouth in a previous video. Forgot which one, exactly, but it was a vaguely monkey-ish creature, and I think it had two buzzsaws on its shoulders and kind of a cone head. Anyway, it had a monkey/ape mouth, and it sounded just like a chimp.

Adding more than one mouth should make for some interesting blended vocalizations...

Being as I'm bored, I was wondering what people think would make Spore even more social and interactive with the internet crowd.

We have YouTube integration. We have MySpace-esque features. There is the email a screenshot feature. The only thing I can see making Spore (whether expansions or in Spore 2) even more interactive is Wikipedia function.

Imagine a Wikipedia in which people can create and maintain entire Wikipedia articles about their creatures. Never gonna happen, but it would be the pinnacle of interactivity with the "Net-suave" crowd.

I like this idea. WikiSporepedia. There's only so much information a regular Sporepedia card can hold, after all, or so I assume. With Wiki entries, players can have entire essays on history, culture, behavior, evolution, etc. Perhaps screenshots, as well?

Even if Maxis/EA didn't implement this, though, I'm sure it could be done by fans. It would just take more work outside of the game and be a lot less integrated. There's always the problem of who they allow to edit the entries, though.

I see that other replies have suggested chat functionality. If you'll forgive a moment of "spam", I'd just like to provide a link to a topic I just made yesterday that has a concept that incorporates just such a feature: http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?topic=12395.0

I dont know... there is no way to control the content and 'drinks' would certainly be out considering the ages involved. Nah, no 'second life' or chatroom. There would be no way to predict the community... the sims online was will's only venture into true online in-game experience and do you know what people did in it? Sex and virtual prostitution! A spore bar setting would be... similar. Hey baby, does the Smilax want a drink?

Hmm. You have a point. It would be even worse, with virtual prostitutes that could be giant genitalia. Maybe a gathering place with no chat?

this is a singleplayer game - get over it.  :P

Doesn't mean I can't exercise a little creativity to think about how to expand the sense of community.  :P

How about it's a function of the Sporepedia?  Maybe it's unlocked at the CENTER OF THE GALAXY?

I don't know. Can it compete with the Restaurant at the End of the Universe?  ;)

It WOULD be an interesting thing to find at the center, though...a gathering point of those seeking the great Mystery.

since there's no real way to have true spore multiplayer, something like this sounds great. It could be like a chatroom (expanding on your idea). You could invite friends to private "chatrooms" to socialize and maybe challenge each other to mini games. Or you could choose from a couple public servers to go into.

Exactly! I never even thought of private rooms. Good one.

Hey, maybe there could be UFO racing, too? People in the bar could place bets.

Since I wanted to contribute something to this forum besides a random comment here and there, I thought up an idea that hasn't been discussed before (to my knowledge). If it's popular, let's hope the Spore team hears of it and implements it in a future expansion. :)

Anyway, it all started when I heard "Copacabana" on the radio. That immediately brought to mind the parody, "Star Wars Cantina". And, since I'm obsessed with Spore and always have it on my mind to some degree, my thoughts stumbled onto the concept of the Spore Cantina.

Essentially, it's an interactive chat room, or a single location in an MMORPG. It's a cantina (duh), either on a planet or a space station, where all races can gather to socialize. Players could log in with their chosen creature, meet other players, and talk, play darts, drink, maybe engage in a barroom brawl, whatever.

I just think it would be so awesome to have an in-game location where you can directly show off your creature to others, all the while interacting with theirs. It would be a perfect roleplaying opportunity. Players could even contribute to it in interesting ways, like inventing drinks, maybe composing background music, stuff like that.

Anyone else have any interest in this concept?

While I in no way condone slavery in any real-world sense...

...I think it would kick butt to have a race going around conquering the galaxy and enslaving all other races.

Really, there are only two things you can do with the enemy when you're at war:

1. Exterminate
2. Enslave (to some degree or another, from occupation to full-blown forced labor)

I guess there's always the "Globetrotters" option, as well: show the enemy that they are all jive turkeys and move on after the battle is won.

Anyway, slavery would make it possible to be like the Ur-Quan. Battle thralls? Excellent.
