Storytelling and Roleplaying / -Dwarf metagame-
« on: July 15, 2008, 06:24:11 pm »
It's that time again, folks.
Obviously, i cannot see reason and stop making and quitting meta games, so here's a new one.

Meet Trilby the dwarf. (unless you have a better name.)

To make this meta game, you'll have to decide what Trilby will be, a generic warrior? a backstabbing dirtbag rogue? a devilishly handsome magician? or a ... erm.. bard. anyway, make something up together, unless you're just can't work together.

And then, you will have to decide what his starting proffesion/persona/situation will be, will he be a guard? or perhaps a captain of the guard in a mighty fortress(dwarven or human, doesn't matter. i suppose the universe this will be set in is the dwarf fortress universe, with some twists.) or will he be a daring adventurer, seeking treasure from dark caves and dungeons? perhaps a skilled scientist living in the forest, shunned by the local villagers after using some of them for experiments?

the choice is yours *x-files theme*

Like i said, it will be set in the dwarf fortress era, but more gritty, i suppose i might go all nothing is taboo in this one, or extremely violent.
hammerspace will be used.

Forum Games / Guess what i am doing as i post.
« on: July 12, 2008, 05:07:24 am »
The next poster tries to guess what the above poster is doing at the time of his post, what kind of clothes he/she is wearing, what kind of food is being consumed, what kind of monsters is being fought, what kind of vehicle is being driven... etc.

Poster 1: wee, i started this topic.
poster 2: You are drinking a beer, listening to sonata arctica, and there are seagulls outside your window.
Poster 3: you are swimming in the Mediterranean, there are sharks nearby, you are eating a twix.

Spore: General / Missions made by other players
« on: June 27, 2008, 10:37:07 am »
I was just wondering if maybe it would be a good idea to make a system for the space stage and/or the tribal and civ stages that allows other players to make missions that other people can do?

like... mission: you must explore this planet and then start a colonizing project there. then, i would edit the mission to have a random aggressive(or not) race also try to colonize the planet, and you then get to stage two in the mission where you either have to tell the new creatures to get lost, or if you decide to befriend them.

if you befriend them, you then get to stage three in the mission, where you are to establish trade between them. then i as the mission creator could have a random native tribe attack the traders(caravans i suppose going from your colony to the other colony you befriended) and you then get to stage four of the mission, where you have to eliminate the tribal threat or make them stop attacking you by either paying them a share of the deal.

if you attack them, you would get to stage three in the mission where i would edit the mission to make the creatures attack you and have them establish military outposts nearby your own colony. i would then give you the task of either creating a defensive force of say, 10 armoured vehicles(if you are on the same tech level, if you are higher up in tech, then the needed number vehicles are lessened, but if you are technically weaker than them, you must make more vehicles) and have them... say... defend the main gate... or make a skirmish run on the nearby outpost.

just a rough scetch of what i am thinking, so that the space stage won't get dull after one hour of gameplay, which i fear it might.
or do we know anything about say, procedurally created missions?

you'd get missions like you get creatures, you download them automatically or not from the sporepedia.

i don't know if it would work very well, but it's a thought.

PC Games / LotR - Conquest

Gameplay video

So, i have always been a battlefront player, and Pandemic are making a new one only based in the Lord of the Rings world.
Overall, i really like what i see, and see potential, but i really hope they won't be as idiotic as Might and Magic Dark Messiah Multiplayer :D

The first one, Gazurg, who i had planned since 05'.

Then Poe, notice the leaf underwear. though it is of no effect if he moves though  :D

Then the tall and spooky Cold.

Exosaurus, originality <3

Laff laff!

This one is not viable for hugs.  ;D

Made one with wings, wonder how it'll do in the game  :P

I have tons more, but uploading to imageshack takes time and boring effort, so just enjoy this.

Ahoy, mateys!

I am back again with another meta game. this time, you'll be helping a mountain troll through life! you decide what our friend will do, will he become a hunter and simply roam the mountainside gathering leather and food from the local wildlife? or will he become a warrior mercanary fighting for the highest bidder? or will he create his own mountain home, mining for unknown treasures in the mountains?
Or will he become a cunning wizard, mastering the techniques of ancient magic?

you decide. but for now, our troll is very basic, having a leather loincloth and a wooden club.
through your wise decision making, you'll turn him into something great.

Our troll has awoken from a very long slumber, and is ready to take on the world.

Ages past he raided a dwarven merchant caravan and stole whatever he could. he got this map, depicting the local area. it's pretty old and parts are fading away, exploring the countryside will help us know more of the area.

So, what to do? first you must decide an awesome name for him. then what he should do, visit the local tavern? though there might not actually be a tavern, as the map is quite old.

(I'll use hammerspace for items. don't actually need to eat or anything, won't go that deep and advanced. though he'll get a strength boost if he eats.
i'll add more, need sleep.)

PC Games / zork game maker?
« on: June 08, 2008, 02:31:32 pm »
anyone know of any way to make your own zork game?

"This is an adamantine goblet, all craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with emerald and ruby. on the item is an image of a dwarf sitting on an adamantine throne, the dwarf is laughing."

Hello, hello! it's been quite a while since i have touched this part of the forum. I suddenly got the wacky idea of making a dwarf fortress themed meta game. The thing above is what you are supposed to manage with our protagonist; Kogan Kezatgunlel (Fishrape). this dwarf is not your usual one man army-dwarf. oh no, this one barely has a beard! his parents were both killed in a nasty carp accident, possibly explaining his last name. he has been an orphan in the seven year old fortress; Demontaunt.
Kogan grew up without his parents as a fisherdwarf. all the dwarves noticed that he was a bit odd, he didn't have any beard, he was barely strong enough to lift a book! Then one day a dwarf named Terl attempted to sexually assault a female dwarf in the fortress. He framed Kogan for doing it, he was innocent. But nobody believed Kogan when he tried to prove he was not guilty. The dwarves threw him out of the fortress and now he has nowhere to go but to adventure!!

Here goes!

Ack! I got thrown out of my own home! Now what? Where shall i go, where can I go??
They were kind enough to give me some food, though, so i won't starve out here. I also brought my map.

Right. I am here(red dot) and the fortress gate is the horseshoe-ish icon to the right. nothing but mountain ranges to the east, i don't see any reason why i would want to go there yet. The river to my west goes far down south to more dwarven halls, i believe. Right across the bridge the tree humpers, uh... i mean the elves live. further to the west are the humans, maybe they are the answer to my troubles!
Right to the south of the elves lie a goblin tower. i bet there are some riches there. but i don't really have anything to defend myself with, i'm sure the elves have swords or whatever. To the north... don't know. i only know that the farther up north you go, the colder it gets.

So, where to?

((Rules: i'm using hammerspace on this one(like in the Zelda games where link just happens to have all his items under his skirt.) , i'll make an item bag picture later. you can just ask to look around the surroundings, as i didn't get to make a new scene, i'll get right on it when i update. I'll prolly get like, skill sheet and all that covered later. Out in the wilderness we'll prolly find some kobold kids playing or the like. if we're lucky, we might even find a kobold with some sort of weapon, and i want to make combat much cooler for this one, as some of you may remember the fighting in the amazing adventure was really dull, i'll try and improve. Post as much as you can, as that helps me want to continue this. for now, we'll see how this works out, and i hope you enjoy))

Everything Else / My Pc is working with the police/ambulance
« on: May 11, 2008, 09:19:07 am »
i was just sitting on my comp, playing oe cake.

i also listened to muse.

then suddenly my computer harddrive(i guess) makes a weird sound with it's internal speaker thing or whatever like an ambulance car would. i swiftly closed cake, and youtube thinking that was the problem or something, it continued for like two seconds then stopped. nothing happened.

this has happened again some time ago, like tow or one months ago. but i dismissed it as i thought it was ok.

should i be worried?

Spore: General / ian bogost on spores universal appeal.
« on: April 05, 2008, 03:57:46 pm »

After taking Spore's creature editor for a spin at the ICE 2008 conference and watching the average, non-gaming public's response to the editor, Ian Bogost has some opinions on the universal appeal of Spore (or lack thereof). Unlike The Sims, Bogost says, Spore is facing a significant challenge in getting to the general public:

"... The observation that surprised me the most was how people totally unfamiliar with Spore reacted to the very idea of a creature editor. From my perspective, it's a brilliantly engineered, elegantly constructed content authoring tool. But from theirs, it's an unfamiliar interface to an almost deviant act.

... Among the newbies, there was a significant amount of uncertainty and performance anxiety. People weren't sure they would be able to build something, even with encouragement and example. One even said, over my shoulder, "I'm not sure I'm creative in that way." I found this reaction fascinating."

Bogost says that Spore is undoubtably going to be influential on a number of levels, but whether it's going to be a massive commercial success remains to be seen. I don't always agree with his conclusions, but Ian always give good food for thought.

Maybe this means we wont get that many penis creatures.

Art / Drawing fight!
« on: February 21, 2008, 06:43:55 pm »
I got this idea from martyk, basically you start by drawing something like a stickman, then the next poster edits the picture by adding something in that kills the stickman of the previous poster, then the next poster after that kills that person or just adds something or whatever.

Drawing skills do not matter, all can join.

I can start by creating the terrain.

PC Games / Hamachi matches
« on: January 26, 2008, 09:03:15 am »

So, ever heard of hamachi? it basically allows you to play LAN games over the internet, like DotA(wc3), age of empires2, dawn of war, or whatever.

Anyone up for a huge game with people from Gaming Steve?

I like DotA, so i would like to play with people from here.
Doesn't have to be dota, but the game should be something everyone has. And msn is a great way to setup a match.

what say you?

PC Games / The friendly game advice topic!
« on: January 10, 2008, 10:45:48 am »
From request by LadyM, i made a help/advice topic where people can share and ask for strategies and advice about whatever game you want.

Can't think of anything i'd like to know right now.
But go ahead, ask here!

Forum Games / The above poster's name
« on: January 01, 2008, 07:05:11 am »
Ok, so there are alot of people who have strange names. i always wonder why they choose strange names, so why not make a topic about it. Guess what the above poster's name means, or why it was used.
