Spore: General / Changing Names

It's a simple concept, it really is.  Since the beginning of time, people have been able to change the names of the various stuff they create upon computers.

But, when I use a base creature, and try to outfit it in different ways, I notice that Spore does not allow you to change the name once it has been outfitted.

I try to upload it, download it, change the filename, and get it back into the editor, but the filename has no connection with the name of the creature.

I rightclick, leftclick, highlight, go online, but the Spore team seems to have been determined to make the player be stuck with the name that they gave their creation back in the creature stage!

Does anyone know how to change the name of tribal, civilization, and space creatures?  It seems like a pretty glaring issue.

There was an interesting article in the Escapist this week, about how the author's child was taught how to communicate through the use of videogames.  Apparently, being able to create a creature in Spore and have it be animated helped him understand how to recognize emotions in other people.

I suppose it's about time I made one of these topics, since the GA expansion is getting my hoped up for Spore, and more imprtantly, increasing the number of things I'm creating.

First and foremost, here is my rendition of a Travelar.  They say you can't make humans in Spore, but what "They" didn't predict was the introduction of the ponytail part from C&C.  I love detail parts.

By the end of the second millennium of the Keijha Confederacy, the loose collection of cultures that thrived upon their respective planets was in a state of complacency.  All mechanical projections showed the seemingly fragile STL system of government to be eternal, without error, and without decline.  The machine minds had prevented all revolution, and ensured the continued expansion of the Keijha races.   But the Xiha had one more projection to make.

With the introduction of FTL transport, their “empire” would crumble without question.  Without a sense of unity or an effective army, a government that had persisted for over 500 years would be rendered obsolete within days.  Without even a rudimentary FTL communication system, a hypothetical war fleet could attack whole systems at their leisure, outracing the warnings from the planets they had conquered before.

The Xiha managed to suppress these technological advances within their own spheres of influence, but they lived in constant fear of outside invasion.  Little did they know that the fall of the Confederation would come from an unexpected source.

Two unexpected sources, actually.  Two inevitable events, completely unpredicted, that coincided within the same century.  Originating from within the Xiha itself, these revelations would change the course of Keijhalian history forever.

It is clear to us, the MINDS of the confederation, that the greatest threat to our so-called "empire" is the advent of the impossible, the realization, or contact, of the ansible, or FTL drive.  Within or without the Keijha confederacy.  Measures must be taken to ensure the quick suppression, and silent manipulation, of the colonies close to such a breakthrough, and those that rebel against us must be eliminated.

For the good of our creators.

Spore: General / Perhaps an explanation on the "stealing"

I was playing Spore today, and I didn't feel like making yet ANOTHER factory.  So I took a maxis building, colored it blue, and plopped it down onto my city.


When I checked the Sporepedia, the offending building was sitting there, with MY name as the author.

So obviously, many of these nefarious hardened criminals of creatures may just have done what I had accidentally touched upon.  They saw something they liked, they wanted to play with it, and decided just to change the paint job to fit with the rest of their stuff.

Art / An "art" game

I just unearthed my old copy of gamemaker 6, and after some hours of obsessive coding I created the product below.

Basically, this "game" is not much about gameplay rather than exploring concepts, such as vector physics, "planetary" terrain, lighting, and soft camera movement.  I focused on getting a graphics style more than anything.

So, here is the game.  Left/Right is rotating the ship or moving (counter)clockwise about the planet outside the ship, up is jump or thrust, and space is leaving or entering the ship.  You can only do so if the ship has landed and isn't moving.

So, as you can see, it is basically polished but mainly empty.  The idea of this thread is to give suggestions to what I can add that will still fit the style I have tried to convey, such as objects, concepts, sounds, and other music (I just chose a file at random).  In the end, we can create an "art" game.

Spore: General / Exploration?

Sooooo, there have been threads about the boring replayablitly, the sucky combat, and the shallow gameplay. Boring!  Let's talk about something interesting instead!  :P

What is the exploration like?  That is my top concern for this game, and it will be the first thing I'll look for when I get it.  What is it like, prowling with your "pack" at night, through a world with a starry sky, those huge mushroom thingies, and creatures of the dark trying to eat you?  Is playing around with the minds of the tribal species fun when in space stage?  What was your first impression when an alien race talked to you in gibberish talk?

Storytelling and Roleplaying / A Faerie Tale

(Note:  In this story, I shall be using actual folklore.  So do not try and “correct” me on certain subjects without a source.  For instance, a Kobold is not a lizard-like denizen of DnD, it is the German version of the Knockers, a Cornwall goblin that haunts mines.)

Prologue:
The wind billowed around the old elderwood trees, shaking their thorny branches violently in the early morning fog.  It was a cold autumn morning, and nothing moved save for the swaying branches.  Nothing, that is, except for two small figures stealing quietly through the wood, tears of fright and exhaustion streaming down their faces.

One of these, a boy of about fifteen years, looked sharply back over his shoulders, making sure that no one was following them through the desolate glade.  He was of a thin stature with wild hair, and his gaunt eyes peered fearfully into the dark behind him.

“Never once must we speak of this.  Not once.” He whispered hoarsely to his companion, a small girl covered in ash from head to toe.

He repeated this to her, and she nodded solemnly.

“Not once, brother.  Or the hags will find us again.” She answered softely.

Naught saw them save for those that do not matter…

Yet.


1.   The village
Jack ran through the marketplace, scampering between the legs of the taller villagers, much to their protest.  Despite being of the age of seven, he was still at the short stature of 3’ 6”, and was ridiculed for this many times by his schoolmates.

He scratched at the band concealed under his black tangled hair, and thought with dread about the tasks that awaited him that day.

It was Sunday.  And Sunday meant going to church.

Oh, how he despised it.  The stiff clothes, the hard benches, but worst of all was the prattle of the priest.

He did not know why, but for some reason every time the priest gave a sermon he felt the uncontrollable urge to laugh out loud, cry, and cringe in terror at the same time.  He disliked this surge of emotions, and thus he had volunteered to get water for his family so that he could clear his head.

With this in mind, he jumped over the stile at the end of the road, an impressive 2 feet tall, and stumbled up to the river bank on the other side of town.

Humming to himself a tune he heard in a dream, he slowly watched as the rushing water filled the bucket in his hand.

Suddenly, someone finished the tune for him.

He looked up startled to see a grinning girl of four years, shorter even than he was, wearing a cloak of scarlet and prancing about on the stile.

“Oh.  It’s only you, Rachel!  For a moment I was worried.”  Jack sighed in relief.  He had heard stories of water creatures like the dreaded Peg Powler, whose sole delight was to drown and devour little children.

“Heya, cuz!  What’cha doin?” she asked, half giggling, half speaking, always prancing about in an almost hypnotic fashion.

“Getting some water to douse your silly hood with, little Red!” he laughed, gesturing the bucket toward her.

She immediately frowned severly, trying not to smile, and said with a pout, “Don’t call me that!”

He laughed, and started to prance around her, flinging water with every step.

“Little red!  Little red!”

She squealed, and started to pelt Jack with acorns.

Suddenly, a clatter from the stream froze them in their tracks.  A green head, adorned with shells, surfaced from the water.

In a dry rasping voice, it spoke.  “Hello, children.  Would you like to go on an adventure?”

It leered at them cruelly.

"Greetings, ignorant masses!  I am Richard Von Rich, and I am here to tell you that, despite the fact that my wealth is far greater than anything you will achieve in life, I'm getting bored.

I tire of bribing governments so that they can provide me with amusement.  I tire of buying the most expensive things I can think of and crash them into each other.

So, as the massive amount of unethical moolah that I have collected over the years (And through various inheritances) is losing its interest, I will turn to you all, the human capital, for entertainment.

I am currently standing on the future site of Gamingsteveland, where all of you will be soon, attracted by the promise of wealth and being idiots on television.

In this wasteland, you will live, love, fight, and die.  The audience will enjoy your deaths.

To commemorate the fact that I'm better than you, I will now burn this money.  Have a nice day."



((Okay, so this is the planning thread for a meta-game I've been thinking of.  I was thinking, perhaps we could have a village "map", with buildings and areas.  People would sign up, and state any preferences they would have for their character:  i.e. Have them be male or female, have a crush or not on another member (chosen randomly), and a job or family.  If they don't, it will be randomized (fun!)

People will post public actions in the game thread, and private actions (Like having an affair or backstabbing a friend) would be pmed to the GM.  Just to have things interesting some people will be psychos or thieves, and once every game "day" the gm will post one private action (chosen randomly) that everyone can see.

There will be pictures, interesting conflicts, epic battles, and the game will go on until everyone tires of it, or is killed.

There you have it.  A village simulator with no win conditions, but interesting enough social dynamics and some mafia-esque ness thrown into the mess to make it fun.))

Everything Else / Skyscape

(Some of the things may seem a little wierd, like the "Tiros wars".  But don't worry, I will fill in the history later.  Fall is the island upon which this story takes place.)

Ragged, battle scarred, and tired from the Tiros wars, the humans of Fall made their way up into the North, a barren land filled with ash and wyrms.

Standing upon the barren land, they declared, “Never again!  Never shall those of sand and dust harm us!  Never shall the great behemoths of Earth defeat us!  From henceforth, we stop running, and we stand our ground!  From this moment onward, we rise into the sky, and dominate both this land and the secrets of the universe!  We will return one day, and build a citadel upon the very ground where the Tirona fell!  We will conquer the very forces which govern the universe!”

And with that, they built and planned; researched and discovered.  They churned the landscape with factories and mines built out of sheer determination.  And on the 599th year of their defiance, a magnificent iron city rose into the air, the very force of its engines turning the ground below it into dust!

The city of Golgotha.  A massive construct of iron and steel, its builders used about 1.5 million tons of material to build it.  It stays in the air through the solar sails, which through the ingenious use of wyrm ash and glass particles keeps the city aloft.  It is powered by the Source, silicon particles fused to a state similar to the sun’s surface, and uses the same power which kept the Tirona moving.

The land of Skyscape is barren, cold, and has the fertility of a block of arsenic.  Therefore, most of the people of Skyscape relied on commerce to provide them with necessities, and eventually luxuries.


This is the basic transport of Skyscape.  It has room for five people, can fly up to twice the length of Golgotha without having to turn back for refueling, and can go about as fast as a speedboat.


The ship in the middle is called a Guardian.  About the size of the Hidenburg, these babies can reach speeds similar to those of an airplane, but due to it only being able to go twenty times farther than a Sunsail, many preferred to use lower speeds.


The fastest ship of all, Arach’s pride is a flagship of Arracha, the second city of Skyscape.  It can fly four times farther than a sunsail, and is twice as big as one.


Quote from Exodus:  “Humans are resilient.  What they cannot jump over, they chop down.  When they cannot outrun the sun, they build a vessel fast enough.  Even without their abilities, humans can rule the world one day.”

Note:  Remember the past tense.  Due to some unknown event in the past, all what remains is the huge flying cities, a few spires in lava, and the motionless husks of people who where crystallized when the event occurred.
