The "Stop the Mad Scientist with the Giant Magnifying Glass!" RP
-Or The Whatever RP-

The OOC - Information Station

*shoots a confetti cannon*

Welcome one and all to TSMSGMG! This RP is a very laid back super fun times for all sort of game. All you need to know is that despite being loopy and fun, the quality of your posts cannot be set to the side. You are still expected to write well and work with the rest of the group. That said, feel free to have fun and experiment. Just don't godmod or be a total dickasaurous. The world is a world separated into territories that are dominated by different genres. You have Wild West Town located just a short trip from Dystopia Land and both of them are down the road from Samurai Village. All of these places are fully aware of each other and normally keep to themselves for reasons that we really don't need to worry about. Sometimes they get together for parties and poetry readings. And for some reason no seemingly superior genre takes over the others. Space Marine Orbital Platform doesn't feel it necessary to subjugate the fine, upstanding citizens of Caveman Paradise (they have mini-golf).

So do you get it? Good. It's not complicated, just don't be an asshat or stupid. GO!

Welcome to The Micro-RP!

The general idea behind The Micro-RP is to construct a short story with a minimal number of players. It's really easy. If you know how to RP, you know how to Micro-RP! We all know the rules and we all know the philosophy so there's no need to go into major detail. In fact, these bite-sized RPs are a great place to throw the rules and guidelines out the window and delve into some advanced play styles! Any and all are welcome and if you'd like to start up your own Micro-RP, simply register the idea here with this topic and we'll get it put on the list. That's all!

Arc I: Of Orbs and Octane
Arc II: Resurgence

OOC - Information Station

Greetings adventure-seekers! DiRossi Experimental Science Concern welcomes you to the DRE Sidereal Hour. If it was our Scientific Extrapolation Analyzer that chose you or if you bested the competition in the Hazzazaf Energy Supplement heavy lifting contest, the board wants to extend its most sincere congratulations and wishes you good health the journey you are about to begin. Like the non-negotiable contract you signed said, you are given free reign to explore the galaxy and learn as much as you can about whatever you can on board one of civilization's most-advanced ships. In return, you have agreed to allow DRE and its associates to monitor your activities. Additionally, you will be given mission from DRE and it's associates from time to time which you must see through to completion. If you fail to complete your missions you may be ejected from the DRE Sidereal Hour. Don't forget, you are representing not only your species, but galactic civilization as a whole.
And remember our motto: DiRossi's concern is your concern.

Do us proud, adventurers!

Here we are, the first test of the unified RP community. Let's start off with some general info! First and foremost, you can read our guidelines here. For the time being things are going to be in a bit of disarray but it'll be fine during this testing period. Should this RP prove successful, we'll continue it! Right now though, all we have to worry about is getting some character bios up! Just fill out the following form and you'll be ready to play once things start! We will need a...

Name:
Age:
Species: (Also include a short description of your character's appearance - pictures welcome!)
Bio:

As far as your species is concerned, feel free to bring over one of your old creatures or start a whole new one if that's your idea. The thing with preexisting creatures is that they're starting off with a blank slate. As well, it isn't required that you write up an entire history of the species up front. In fact, it might be better if you didn't. Play the character first and develop some insights... keep the rest of us in suspense as to why your creature is the way it is. Finally, on the topic of humans... there are humans! They're just another species out there to play as, if you feel inclined to do so. The one thing I was advised to make clear though was that we don't mention Earth. It's been lost for years or something, I dunno. Just avoid it.

We'll do character bios for the next couple days and I'll throw a basic outline of the story up for everyone to familiarize themselves with. A person to play the antagonist's role will be selected in the coming days. If there are any questions feel free to ask them in this topic. Otherwise, remember that we're all working together on this so keep it respectful and keep it clean! Move out!

In exchange, you have agreed to allow SIC and/or other interested parties to monitor your progress for the betterment of galactic life. Additionally, from time to time you may be given directives from SIC and/or other interested parties, which you must see through to completion. Phlogiston: Return to Adventure
A Steampunk RP

Fifteen years have come and gone since the end of the previous story. Isaac Kysely and his mysterious Promethium Engine lie dead and buried. His once-grand palace of industry now silent, slipping further and further into ruin and decay. Lucinda Tos is no more. Her grand scheme to control time broken into bits and pulverized, much like the glass tower she once called home. And yet the wheels of progress continue to turn. The world marches onward into the future and is now bigger and better than either of the old tycoons could have ever imagined. Stars rise and fall in the same spectacular fashion that they always have. And empires are still created and destroyed on the backs of those less-fortunate. But something is different about the world because of what the mega-tycoons did. Attitudes have changed and the competition is more fierce than ever before. It is uncivilized. Honor and tact are gone and the art of the game is no longer valued. Grand Central, the main hub of all business in the world, has become a dour place of walls and locked doors... a far cry from the energetic and optimistic social club it had been. Survival in this brave, new world demands a keen sense of awareness and the ability to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

Anything less and the competition will swallow you whole.

A Brief Fantasy Adventure
Information Station

Hello and welcome to A Brief Fantasy Adventure. This RP is meant to be a shorter more open-ended RP. Players can make a character and jump into the story and if all goes well the game will be over in about one or two weeks. If the players wish to play longer, so be it! There are no deadlines or any such thing in play with this RP. We're going to go by the book with this one. The standard guidelines and concepts will apply. Players will make their characters according to our standard chart (which can be found at the end of this paragraph) and everyone begins the story in the local inn. Simple, easy, and to the point.

Character sheets should be set up as follows...

Name:
Age:
Bio:
Abilities:

And beyond that we'll begin the RP topic with a very simple story outline to be fleshed out in-character. That's all!

Storytelling and Roleplaying / An Introduction to the Hybrid System

The Hybrid System
Last Edited 9/29/09

An Introduction

Welcome! After a lot of deliberating and arguing back and forth we've (Neoadept, Yossitaru, Zolinn, and myself) have come up with a system that we feel is ready to test. Special thanks to Mr. Wizard and Yokto for offering additional insight. What we have here is not a replacement for the old system of Role Play; actually, what we've put together will hopefully be a viable alternative to the current system and will allow newer players a chance to actually be able to breathe whilst playing with the veterans. Our primary goal was to eliminate the ever-increasing amount of scripting taking place in our RPs. Scripting (which is basically pre-planning the story) makes for interesting plots but only for those involved; as well, the veteran players pretty much have exclusive rights to scripting and can dictate the entire RP. This is not good for the longevity of what we do. New players suffocate under the pressure of having to comply to the story laid out by the big guys and regular players become frustrated at not being able to exercise their creative abilities. Worse still, the stories have been becoming increasingly predictable and to say that we've fallen into a rut would be an understatement.

The Hybrid systems offers a way to alleviate these problems and without a lot of stress. Basically what we've done is inserted some random chance elements (like what you would find in Dungeons & Dragons) that will impact the outcome of the story as well as faction movements. This should prevent people from planning too far ahead in the RP since now nobody will be able to predict the outcome. Of course, the outcome of a story arc can be influenced; however, it is no longer just a simple matter of writing in the advantage. All of the existing guidelines and concepts will remain unchanged. The Hybrid System offers two major additions to the current system that I will now explain. Please offer feedback, we're very interested in seeing what you think? We've also got a test RP planned which will be starting very soon. We'd love for anyone with an interest to join and help us out!

The Details
There are two major additions that the Hybrid System puts forward and they are the Outcome Roll and the Sabotage Roll. Both are related and both tie exclusively into the plot of the RP.

Outcome Roll: The Outcome Roll is the simplest of the two new mechanics. It's so simple I almost don't need to explain it. During the critical moment of the story a twenty-sided die is rolled to determine the outcome. By default, each faction will have an equal chance of winning the roll. Since we typically only have two factions (heroes and villains) the roll will be easy enough to conduct. There will be opportunities for the factions involved to improve their chances of winning the Outcome Roll; however, neither side is assured victory and the story could go in any number of ways.

In the old system we would leave this up to the individual writers; however, that led to choices that were usually self-serving and more or less predictable. With the Outcome Roll, nobody really knows who is going to come out victorious. It can be used for physical fights amongst characters or elections or even plain old luck. This should drastically cut down on scripting and keep players focused on the present. And really, focusing on the present leads to more fulfilling stories and a better experience overall. It will also mean that newer players will have a much better chance of getting their voices heard.

Sabotage Roll: The Sabotage Roll is the real essence of the Hybrid System. With it a faction has a chance to increase their chances of "winning" the arc. Sabotage Rolls have a direct impact on the Outcome Roll and will be a player's best friend. The way it works is fairly simple; though, there is some basic math involved. To use a Sabotage Roll a player has to be in a logical situation in which their character has a chance to score some points for the team. Now, this does mean that a Sabotage can be used at any time; however, remember that you'll still be operating within the traditional guidelines and so you must be mindful of when and how a Sabotage is being used. There is a lot of leeway in using Sabotage Rolls and it was designed that way such that the players' creative juices won't be stifled.

A few things about the Sabotage Rolls so that we're all clear. As far as the two-faction system is concerned, the villain faction will have one Sabotage chance per arc and the hero faction will have two per arc. This means that some thought must go into using a Sabotage Roll, as all characters in a faction will be drawing from the same pool. There is a 50-50 chance of successfully pulling off a Sabotage Roll. If you succeed in a Sabotage Roll, your faction's chances of winning the Outcome Roll increase. Should you fail the Sabotage Roll, your faction's chances of winning the Outcome Roll decrease. Here is where you have to pay attention. The breakdown of how a Sabotage impacts the Outcome differs depending on the faction. I'll try to make this as simple as possible but if you get lost, please ask questions!

I'll be using the two-faction setup as a model.

Hero:
If you are playing the hero role and succeed with a Sabotage Roll your chances of winning the Outcome Roll increase by 10%.
If you are playing the hero role and fail a Sabotage Roll your chances of winning the Outcome Roll decrease by 5%.

Villain:
If you are playing the villain role and succeed with a Sabotage Roll your chances of winning the Outcome Roll increase by 10%.
If you are playing the villain role and fail a Sabotage Roll your chances of winning the Outcome Roll do not decrease.

And that's more or less it. I tried to make the Sabotage Roll as easy to understand as possible; however, I'm sure there are questions. So I'd like for anyone and everyone with an interest to voice their opinions. Feedback is encouraged and will help us make a better system. Ask anything and tell us anything. If you like it, great! Don't like it? Tell us why. Thanks for your time.

The Medieval RP

Welcome to the Medieval RP at the Gaming Steve forum. If you are interested in playing or have any questions feel free to go to the Out of Character topic or the Information Station. Otherwise, please respect the people taking part in the RP and do not post here if you are not playing. Be sure that you are aware of our RP Guidelines and our Creation Guide. Finally, we have an Out of Character topic for a reason, post your out of character musings in there and not here in the game topic.

Remember, everything that is written in this topic belongs to the person that wrote it and nobody else!

And that'll do it, let the RP begin...

Welcome to Aerd, a world of Medieval fantasy! In the many ages since Aerd's creation vast empires have risen to power and been cast into oblivion. Aerd's bastions of civilization stretch far and wide with little standing in the way of daily business. Yes, there are those that wish to rule and others that wish to conquer but they are rarely able to shake the established order. A general feeling of contentment permeates the diverse peoples of the world and few have reason to question their place in it; still, the adventurer's spirit is not dead. Driven by the stories of old, some decide to set out in hopes of finding fame and fortune. These adventurers, whether they know it or not, are on the front lines in the fight against those who would rather see the world burn. Most of their stories are never told but every now and again one of them bridges the gap between adventurer and legend.

Storytelling and Roleplaying / The Medieval RP OOC

This is the topic for the Medieval RP. Over time this topic will grow and change. We've got a poll built in so that we can discuss and vote on RP issues. You can find the Medieval RP's Information Station by clicking on the orange text. It will take you to a complete list of story arcs and characters.

For the time being let's talk about this "Medieval" RP. Before anything else try to keep an open mind and don't think too hard, have fun! We are going to be using a Medieval setting with Fantasy flavoring. All of your favorite things are here: kings and queens and princesses, dragons and knights, wizards, orcs, and whatever else you want. The only real parameters are that you not be silly about some things. Make your characters fair and believable. It would go a long way to read our general RP guidelines as well as our creation guide.

Also one last thing, no one person is in charge of this RP. Every person that joins will have equal representation. When time comes to vote on things everyone's vote counts the same. No one person can tell you what to do. The panel of players, however, can and by joining you are agreeing to accept whatever rulings the panel of players in this RP says. Yeah, that sounds a little like serious business but it's just a formality. Don't worry about it too much.

Now that we've got all that stuff out of the way feel free to start making your characters. Try to follow this form:

Quote from: Medieval RP Character Form
Name:
Age:
Bio:
Skills:

After that our next order of business will be to choose who will play the first villain. That'll happen once we get enough people into the game... probably five or more. Thanks for your time and tell your friends! :)

Storytelling and Roleplaying / The Historical Superpower RP: Volume III
« on: October 21, 2008, 08:15:23 pm »
The year is 1452 and it is the height of the summer season. The small Roman suburb of Excessum is gearing up to commemorate the longest day of the year. Celebration is the word that is on everyone's mind and nightly parties are not uncommon during the buildup. Still, there is more to the day than most know of. The solstice is a time that sees the guiding forces of the universe bend and twist in unexpected ways. For some it is a time of great opportunity, for others it is a time of fear. These are the last days before the longest day and a time of judgment approaches. Tread lightly and keep alert.

June 19th, 1452 - Two days remain...

Darkness had blanketed Excessum and a low rumble of thunder crept up from just beyond the horizon. A small celebration was happening on the streets, one of many that seemed to appear during the season. With the solstice so near, spontaneous celebration was expected. Tables had been pulled out into the street and drinks were procured. Music was coming from somewhere and a couple dozen people were laughing and making merry. Three people sat at a table that was set back slightly from the rest. They were by no means members of "normal" society. Sitting on one side of the table was a very prim and proper looking man. His posture could only be described as perfect and his clothing was smart while still being slightly subdued. He was Alessandro Aurelio Muraro, an amazingly successful banker and the man to see if you needed something taken care of. Next to Alessandro was a portly fellow who was leaning back on his chair and scratching his belly. He was Ferruccio Piccoli, a well-known landowner and highly decorated military man. The third and final person at the table was a pale woman who, until that night, nobody had ever seen before; however, Alessandro and Ferruccio were worldly men and so nobody thought anything of it. Still, anyone with any sense of foreboding and danger would find their hairs standing on end as they walked past the mysterious woman.

The three were speaking about something in semi-hushed tones. Every now and again Ferruccio would burst out in laughter, much to the chagrin of Alessandro. The woman watched with an emotionless stare and nodded every now and again. Thunder rumbled again, this time much closer, and Alessandro looked over his shoulder.

"We will have to conclude soon." he said "A little more time... are we all clear?"

"I would hope so!" Ferruccio said jovially, lowering his tone "I want the Southern District cleared, those peasants are destroying my view from the south wing."

"It will happen, you need not worry about that." Alessandro said "Do you have my contact ready?"

"Certainly, I will personally give you the location of the meeting tomorrow." Ferruccio said reassuringly.

The woman shuffled in her chair slightly and glanced disdainfully at Ferruccio.

"Do you have something to say?" Ferruccio cut in, noticing her icy stare.

She shook her head and glanced sorrowfully at Alessandro. He stared at her for a moment but didn't think much of it.

"Well, let us enjoy what little time remains of this celebration." Alessandro said, sipping from his glass of wine "The rain will be here soon."

Storytelling and Roleplaying / The First Grand RP - Whetstone's War
« on: August 17, 2008, 06:05:55 pm »
Welcome to Gaia, an oddly familiar planet. In the time since life first began on Gaia, humans have come to rule the roost. It isn't a perfect world but then again who's to say what perfection is anyway? At some point in the past there was a split amongst the humans of Gaia. Some groups decided that they could be better and so they began augmenting their bodies. These augmented humans (known as Augs) were far superior to their basic counterparts. Of course this did not sit well with many and eventually someone did something stupid and a war started. In the end the Augs were beaten into submission and their augments removed. Well, mostly removed... you see, humans are a resourceful bunch and they decided to use the Augs to do their heavy lifting. The Augs were stripped of their weapons but allowed to keep anything that would be useful to the jobs they were assigned. And so this is how things went for centuries. A futuristic utopia was developed on the backs of the Augs and things were good. Then came a time of social reform and many began calling for an end to Aug oppression. Another war was fought, a war of words, and in the end the Augs were granted their freedom. This is the world that you will enter. It is a prosperous world with limitless opportunity for those who are willing to seize it.

Michael Whetstone stood at a podium in front of a massive crowd. Behind him was a glass tower in the shape of a double helix. Etched into the glass above the doors were three words: Augment Resource Network

"And it is my promise that this network will afford augmented humans the resources they require to get ahead and allow the non-augmented humans to feel the sense of safety that they need to move forward." Michael was saying "Gone are the dark days of oppression! Today we begin a new chapter in humanity's story. We may now finally begin to coexist as one and move into the future... together."

The crowd erupted into applause and Michael turned around to cut the ribbon draped across the tower's doors. Shortly after he had finished, a sleek black limo descended from the sky to whisk Michael away. He was a very busy man. Leading a third of the world tended to tire a person out. As the Augment Resource Network slipped off into the distance, a clipboard was pushed into Michael's lap.

"What's this?" he asked.

"The final bit of paperwork associated with the ARN." his assistant said "You know... that bit of paperwork."

"Right, how could I forget?" he laughed "Do they really believe that it'd cost a trillion dollars to design a computer that would give weather and traffic reports to Augs? I swear, some people. Once the authorities begin enforcing this new law though it won't matter. The days are numbered for those pathetic dogs that try to call themselves human."

With a swift pen stroke Michael signed the document. He leaned back in his seat and smiled. The limo raced past a small gathering on the outskirts of town. There, a man was preaching loudly to anyone who would listen.

"Beware the kind words of Representative Whetstone!" he hollered "Beware the Augment Resource Network! It's just another form of control! The war is not over! No... the war is just beginning!"
