I just 'beat' the game (finished the main storyline). took me 45 hours, but I'm really only 64% done. I think I'll start over and make all the other choices, see what happens. Especially one of the last choices, which seems like it would affect the final mission...

There is a very very obvious reason the GTA series has never featured kids and I'm sure cats and dogs aren't in for exactly the same reason.

Yeah, because it's too controversial. The sky is blue too.

I do agree that all of the street clothes are butt-ugly. I wear a suit all the time, especially since you need one for certain missions. Niko is his own person, a character who actually talks and has his own opinion, so I don't mind the lack of customization. I do wish you could customize vehicles, and have them saved even if you wreck them.

One thing I hate is seeing all the restaurants and grocery stores that you can't walk into. It's cool that you can walk into certain apartment buildings, but there's never anybody there or anything to interact with. I want to be able to walk into people's homes, and see them sitting on their couch or something. Also, as was pointed out by a comedian at the comedy club, there's no cats or dogs, which is lame. I want to see cats and dogs and children and babies. Also, I don't think I've seen any bicycles, which seems like a step backwards. There should be skateboards too.

I do appreciate all the new pedestrian actions, like cell phone usage and coffee drinkin, smoking, etc..

Great game overall. I love the 'taking cover' addition.

Got it for the PS3 today. I gotta say I'm not that impressed so far. Definitely not a 10 point rating. More like 8.5 or maybe 9 just because it is GTA after all.

Things I like so far:

-You can actually see prostitutes get on your lap to move up & down, or bob their head, or move their hand, depending on how much you pay them.
-You fly out your windshield if you crash too hard.
-LOTS of bullet holes remain in stuff, havn't tested that fully but there's a lot.
-Running feels more natural
-You can escape cops by driving out of range
-People move whichever body part you shoot
-Drunk walking is pretty cool
-Everything looks beautiful
-It's GTA!

Things I don't like so far:

-You can't customize the controls, and there's only 2 different schemes (standard or classic)
-6-axis is stupid. Havnt tried it on a chopper yet but on bikes it sucks. I'm disappointed I don't have rumble. Sony is stupid in a lot of ways. I know this.
-Cell phone is too easily hung-up/canceled while driving and I've missed a few missions/conversations because of it
-When driving through extremely busy areas you experience some moderate slowdown (PS3 problem?)
-Have experienced 2 or 3 freezes where the system is unresponsive for almost 1 minute (another PS3 Problem?)
-When trying on clothes, the loadtime between styles/colors is like 5 seconds long...

Have any Xbox 360 users experienced those slowdowns?

I meant that nobody really cares about the differences in hardware, so bringing it up repeatedly is obnoxious. It's not going to convince anyone to go out and buy the other console; the whole thing just smacks of fanboyism - two tribes of monkeys screaming and flinging excrement at each other - which we can do without in an intelligent discussion about a game.

I find it interesting! I'm NOT trying to convince anyone of anything. I think the differences between the hardware, and how that affects the game has a valid place in this topic. I'm in no way saying "PS3 rules' xbox sux".   You saying 'that's pointless and uninteresting' is the exact opposite of being constructive in this topic!

Man, you really don't get off that soapbox, do you?

if you're talking to me, I was merely posting an interesting comment relating to what has already been discussed here. Are you saying that his comments are pro PS3? I think it's a very fair and balanced quote about the differences between the hardware. I should also mention that right after that in the interview he says he's very excited about the downloadable episodes, which you should have if you want the full experience. So I'm trying to be fair and balanced, I find it interesting to talk about either way it goes...

From an interview with Sam Houser (Co-creator of the GTA series)

1UP: Let's talk about the hardware issues. Back when GTA4 was delayed, PS3 technical hurdles were cited as a contributing factor. I take it those have been ironed out.

SH: I don't know what anybody's said on that stuff. I didn't say anything, and I stay out of it.... Both machines are absolutely fantastic, but they both come with strengths and weaknesses. The strength of the 360 is a very, very accessible, familiar, effective environment to work in. You're making the game from the get-go, everyone understands its PC environment -- boom, off we go. It's pretty good. One of the problems with the 360, and it affects games like Grand Theft Auto if you think about how much content we put in the actual machine, is the fact that they don't have a significantly larger storage medium than the previous systems. It's a slightly bigger DVD disc.

1UP: Plus, you're not guaranteed a hard drive in every system.

SH: That's a complicated one. I met with a bunch of the senior fellows from [Microsoft]. I said, that's kind of complicated.... The upshot of the technical challenges we've experienced on either the 360 or on the PS3 is [that] both companies stepped up to the plate and have supported us in a way that was beyond even my greedy expectations. They've been amazing. I think that the 360 is going to have to get 'round this issue we're talking about. I can think of various ways they can do it. Hopefully, they're going to adopt one of those in the next year or so, because it's going to become more of an issue. If we're filling up the disc right now, where are we going? It's not like our games are going to get any smaller. I think that issue's on the table with a bunch of games right now. I'm sure they'll come through with an intelligent solution.

Getting things running on the PS3 initially was challenging. I think it was challenging for a lot of companies, but it's also a machine where, now that we've got comfortable with it -- I don't want to say we've cracked it, but we've got comfortable with it -- we know we can make our games. We're at a point now where the games pretty much look identical side by side. There's a slight difference in the way they look. I think that's to do with really low-level technical stuff that I'm not the guy to explain. The 360 games have a certain look to them; PS3 games have a certain look to them. I like the way [the PS3] renders. There's a certain kind of softness without being blurry -- some warmth to it -- and then there's a certain more clinical element to how the 360 looks. Both have plusses and minuses. As far as I'm concerned, they're neck and neck now. That's very much our goal; we do not want to get in the middle of that rather heated, fervent debate.... These guys who wanna defend their systems, you know what? Good on 'em, and let them do it. We just didn't want to give them something that would in any way fuel it....

PC Games / Re: What are you playing now?
« on: April 17, 2008, 08:18:01 pm »
I've been playing games a lot lately. I get to play my PSP at works sometimes, but I usually only play emulators on that because I'm not that interested in many PSP games. So I play Shining Force II at the moment, just finished up Lemmings. On my PS3 I'm really into Dragon Quest VIII right now (didn't have a PS2 so I never got to play it, it looks really good for an old gen game), and I just got the Simpsons Game. I also have PixelJunk Monsters which is fun to play with the Wife. We played the Playstation Eye game 'blurbs' or something which is really interesting experience to be playing with your hands. All killing time before GTA IV which will probably take most of my free time for a while. Any way, I thought I'd ressurect this topic after 120+ days of inactivity.

I don't see how you could consider Playstation to be the underdog, the Xbox still very much is.

The PS3 has sold HALF of what the Xbox 360 has!   That Makes it the underdog!!! DUH!

Current Numbers:

Wii:  20 Million
360: 18 Million
PS3: 9 Million

Quoting that source of yours, "We decided to put this Microsoft-provided information up undigested. Thus, enclosed is a Microsoft-made comparitive analysis. We have not altered, added, or tinkered with the data. We have not interpreted the specs. We have cut and pasted this information from the email into our site and formatted it. Make of it what you will, but be clear we know Microsoft has clearly slanted this info, and we're not endorsing it, just printing their version. There is a difference."

I will not be surprised if GTA IV is better overall on the 360. It's easy for me to get caught up hating on Microsoft. I guess I feel for the underdog and want to support Sony. Competition is a good thing. In defense of the PS3, I do believe it's potential is greater than the 360 for future performance, once programmers figure out how to program for it (of course Microsoft might release a new console by then). There are lots of things I don't like about Sony and the PS3, for instance the controller is too small, is outdated and anti-ergonomic, but let's not make this thread a debate between the systems. Let's wait and see how the reviews and side-by-side comparison screens come out.

I can't wait to play this freaking game. It's going to be awesome no matter which system it's on. WOOOH GTA!!!

yeah you're probably right, it will take longer to load all those extra pixels and better graphics ;)  Load times shouldn't be an issue once you start playing though, I remember reading something about there being no load times for buildings or anything this time.
