Once I figured out the select button lets you evolve, I beat EVO pretty quick. I actually beat the first shark boss with NO evolutions as a tiny little fish (I had to cheat and save A LOT with my emulator). Took like 200 hits, I had to trap it in a juggle. hehe, pretty cool game though. Keep the bunny body small, it jumps higher.

I think it's obvious that planet-explosion devices would have to be disabled.

At first I thought starship warfare would be a nice addition, but that only takes a way from the planets.

So now I'm thinking that the only multiplayer situation would be transporting your army to someone else's planet, building a base, and trying to take over their planet. This of course would happen in an alternate universe where it wouldn't matter if you were erradicated. It would also contain only players who have FULLY EVOLVED, so no swimming in goo with real players.

There is also the problem of two planets ganging up on one planet before they formed alliances themselves. This could be resolved with TEAMS like Battlefield 1942. IE, you are put on ONE planet with 3 other real people and their civilizations. The opposing planet has 4 real people with their civilizations. Whatever TEAM comes out on top wins.

So what if one player goes offline before this happens? Then the AI takes over for them. So you could even have just TWO real people who each have alliances with the computer, and the computer will help them try to take over the others planet.

I don't think this is out of the question...

Ok, maybe just two teams on ONE planet, and forget space alltogether for multiplayer. Make it like every other Online-RTS except with spore characters who are fully evolved.

PC Games / Re: All the free MMORPGs I have found

Umm I'm not sure Kingdom of Loathing counts as an MMORPG, since I don't think you actually ever PLAY with other people. But I didn't last 5 minutes so maybe I'm missing something. Pretty funny though. I might spend more time on it if I was stuck at a job where the internet was my only form of entertainment. I remember playing something a lot like it when I did tech support in call center. It does seem to have quite a bit of variation and little things like that to keep it interesting.

Ahh Nethack. I've been playing that thing off and on for 8 years or so. It's the only game I always come crawling back to. Make sure you visit and get 3.4.3, it has GRAPHICS! (well, sorta). Quite a learning curve, I still don't know what some commands are for. I usually only play as wizard, Charm spells are the best. Nothing like having an army of pets to protect you.

I almost forgot about that game, I havn't played it in months. Classic.

Catchy and wide open:
"Create.  Evolve.  Expand.  Explore.  Spore."

I like that one because it rhymes. Maybe "Evolve, Expand, Explore. Expect so much more. SPORE"

he did say underwater colonies are possible, so they might have to keep the bubbles, and just have tubes connecting or maybe you upgrade to one giant bubble or something. The Genesis device won't be available immediately so you might have to wait for atmosphere to develop with those volcanoes and jsut have people mining inside the bubbles for the time being.

At the end of the GDC presentation, Will said something like, "This game takes you 'From Bacteria to Galactic God', and if anyone comes up with a catchy marketing line for that let me know"

I thought that was pretty good already, but let's try to come up with more for him!

"From Amoeba to Master of the Universe" etc... OR WHATEVER

LESS POSTING MORE PODCASTING!!! lol - Come on Steve we're dying here. WHAT MORE DO YOU KNOW?!?! I've never been such a nerd I'm checking the site like 12 times a day cuz I can't wait.

Slyght makes a very good point. You aren't going to be able to upload your race until it's completely finished, and that could take a very long time. Many of us know that creating ONE character in COH could take a few hours (and that's with PRE-SIZED parts).

So it's reasonable to assume finishing your ENTIRE species PLUS buildings could take 24 hours or more (if you really gave attention to details, which is especially required for specific ideas). I agree many people will give up on their specific ideas and just enjoy ADAPTING. But I also know not to underestimate the amount of time some nerds have to waste on impractical designs.

I do expect to see spongebob soldiers and their pineapple houses. whether or not they will be rediculously easy to destroy. Plus keep in mind, not every race will be aggresive, so you could explore the universe and leave the spongebobs in peace. Or wipe them out. Your choice.

I definitely want to have the OPTION of choosing new races via some sort of browsing menu, but I also want to be surprised by what comes into my universe. Imagine being ambushed by a bunch of snorkels coming up out of the sea, with no warning. I hope you don't have to MANUALLY download and choose your enemies all the time...

I took one look at this and knew there's no chance I could possibly enjoy it. Not user-friendly whatsoever. Does seem to have LOTS of options if you really wanted to get into it. Props for finding another interesting evo-program though.

I'm surprised this hasn't been asked, but then again maybe it has and I missed it.

How are attributes (hit points, damage, armor) going to be affected by the appearance of our creatures?

for example, is a race of slugs going to stand a chance against a race of huminoids, who can move faster, etc...
or is a 'catapult' unit going to have the same attack power and distance as any other races' catapult?

speed must be affected, so is that the only advantage you can create by altering your creatures? or does the size of a mouth affect how much damage is deals?

Not sure if this has been explored yet, havn't found anything.. This is what I'm wondering...  since different races obviously will move differently (different speeds, armreach, size of mouth, etc...), how is this going to affect the "fairness"... I mean, are attributes going to be affected by the length of my tail and the thickness of my skin, etc... Or is my 'catapult' unit, no matter how it looks, going to have the same attributes (Hit points, damage and armor) as my enemies' 'catapult' unit? if I create a slug army, will I only be able to have snail enemies?

I guess we'll find out a lot more this week, I can't wait.

interesting, seems to use a lot of processing power though... which surprises me for being such a small program. Definitely a good way to kill time until spore is released.

they'll probably give it a 'teen rating for animated gore' and 'content will change during gameplay', 'not liable for players creations' etc...

Also they should give the option of blocking any questionable content downloads, and when you upload your creations you have to give them a rating. Anyone who gives their dildo creatures a rating other than 'ADULT' will be warned and then banned from that server.

Personally, I look forward to battling both obscene breasted-dildos and teletubby carebears (oh my!), along with the endless unique player creations. I don't think Maxis could keep up with all the creations, so they would probably rely on people reporting violators.

Of course, many many independant online communites will spring up, whereby you could sign up for the 'Total Freedom Indy Server' where there are no limitations, and no worries of being banned for creating whatever.

I guess it would make sense to limit the default server to absolutely no adult content, and require that you sign up for the special adult servers if you really wanna share the obscene stuff.

As far as copyright infringement goes - Will Wright himself demonstrated creating carebears... I don't think he's worried about that, so neither am I.
