Everything Else / Re: Philosophy Thread

I thought I'd say-though I disagree with the sentiment that there is no God, I see how it logically works.  But I have no idea whatsoever how one can argue that there is no such thing as a soul.  I can argue that someone else doesn't have a soul, although I can't prove it and have no evidence to support it.  But it's absolutely ridiculous to claim that oneself does not have a soul.  Effectively, the fact that you're experiencing anything-including reading this paragraph-proves that you have a soul to yourself, because you just experienced reading it.  It doesn't prove it to me, because I can't experience it for you.

One way to show what a soul is and why you must have one if you're experiencing this is to imagine a world where a random fifty percent of the population has souls, and the other half consists of soulless p-zombies.  By the definition of a soul "a point that experiences things"- which is what I use- any one person could prove to themselves that they were in the former group, but could not prove that any other person was in the former group, as the p-zombies would, since they have a brain that acts the same regardless of the presence of a soul, would say that they were experiencing things when they were in fact not.
While I agree with you, I can see why somebody could say they don't have a soul. It depends on what you think a soul is. If you mean soul as a spiritual thing that is not connected to your body, I would not believe in it. But I just think our "soul" is that part of our brain that has our consciousness.

And for the people that say your consciousness would be destroyed, think of it this way; you have a hand written book. You type it, word for word, then burn the book. Did the book survive? Well, no, the book didn't survive, it was burned. Did the book's ideas survive? Yes, it was copied word for word so the idea of the book survived. I would consider the consciousness the "ideas".

Uro, I think Always/Flisch are talking about a computer which simulates a brain, so it would be like transplanting all a fish's innards into a robotic fishbody what mimicked the physical parameters of a fish.
Then in that case, all you're doing is constructing a facsimile of yourself. Your consciousness dies along with the original brain.

But why would your consciousness die along with the brain? If your consciousness got uploaded and copied too, and there were no flaws, it would be an identical copy. I agree with Daxx on this, since we are all just chemical/electrical inputs/outputs, there could (theoretically) be a machine that can copy our "soul".

You know how at the end of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the movie, but this happened later in the books too) the Earth got recreated? All the inhabitants and locations were just copies of the originals, but they were exactly the same.

The idea that were are nothing more then chemicals and stuff is bothering, but it can't really be argued when you look at it in a rational way.

Well, I think he is telling the truth. If he did post the rat thread, he probable wouldn't apologize for it because I doubt it was that bad.

I want to get into the game industry, but not really for coding the game. I would love to make the plots and concept arts for games, do you need to know how to program for that? I mean, I would be able to teach myself some coding, and I'm planning to take 3D modeling in highschool, so I will gain more knowledge after college and highschool. What are the job options for someone who wants to help create plot, levels, and characters for video games?

Hey, are you a book at a library because I am looking at you.

Do you work at Subway because I think you're hot.

Is there a mirror in your pocket because I want to have sex with you.

You fell down from heaven, did it hurt?

You must be Jamaican because I like Jamaicans and I like you.

Are you tired? Because you have been running. In my head. All day.

Maybe these are only funny to me and my friends...

Can we do a game with a psycho?  I don't remember what it's exactly called, but I think game three had one and the psycho won.

That was cool, we should do that again.

Yeah, it was on Luminar's last game.

If I remember correctly, 7 was the one with that role.
Yeah, I think there was another time too where I wasn't that role. It probable was here.

I remember one time I played somewhere and we had more mafia, and there was a betrayer inside the mafia (they still wanted the mafia to win, but they also needed to become the mafia leaders by killing the other mafia leaders). That made it interesting. Maybe keep the numbers fairly small, like 6 or 8, and have 2 mafia betrayers. That way we wouldn't need to wait as long for the game to get interesting.

Actually, it was pretty complex, so it might be hard to pull off....

Attack the part of the hypothalamus in charge of decreasing the host's sexual drive. Make it so that the infected cannot stop themselves from doing it.

Give them Extreme Satyriasis! >:D

Every one vote for this! It is kind of like zombies, but with sex instead of biting!

They could build people new hearts! They could make new eyes for the blind! Or white blood cells, and just cure aids! Basically a cure for all diseases (yes, i know they can't do it right now im just talking 50 years from now)! They could breed the perfect food or plant or pet!

Well it IS more likely, man. xD
Even if it IS God, you don't know for sure which parts of the bible were true, and which were misinterpretations/lost in transition/etc. At least you can trust the non-militant atheists and agnostics to at least mull the idea over and rethink their stances, have a big debate and reshuffle themselves accordingly.

Exactly what I would do. I'm not an atheist because I think that there couldn't be a god, im an atheist because I think it is good to allways question and rethink ideas. I know that makes me more of an agnostic, but I still call myself an Athesist.
