Spore: Sporepedia Exchange / My First Creature
« on: June 13, 2008, 05:22:33 pm »
Actually my 3-year-old daughter made most of this creature, I just sort of guided her. So I still have yet to make a creature of my own. (once she goes to sleep I can finally get a chance to use the creator myself).

Anyhow here he is. Mr. Springy. He's a friendly creature with red spots and a yellow coat ... he would probably last 3 seconds in the wild, but he animates really well (he's quite, well, springy!). Here he is...

Hey there!

On this board you can upload and exchange files, so you'll be able to not only discuss your creatures, but actually trade and exchange them here. Look for some new creations very soon! (I just got the creator editor myself!). Enjoy!

Spore: General / Looking for a Spore-Specific Writer for the Main Site!
« on: February 13, 2008, 08:04:03 pm »
Between running the main site, trying to keep up with all aspects of the gaming world, and working full-time, I simply don't have the time to cover every single Spore-related article and cover it on the main site. Hence, I am looking for a full-time contributor for the main site to cover all things Spore-related on a daily basis.

If you are interested in applying for this position here are the details:

I am looking for a writer who can post on a daily basis on all things Spore-related on the Gaming Steve section of the main site. This position requires:
  • The time and passion to keep up with the latest developments within the Spore-world and writing about them for the site. This will require you to continuously scan dozens of sites and keep close tabs within the Gaming Steve forum for the latest and greatest in Spore developments.
  • Solid writing ability.
  • Ability to write under pressure and quickly respond to the latest news.
  • A professional attitude towards the gaming industry and gaming as hobby.

In addition, I also require that you:
  • Possess a fast computer (a laptop is best).
  • A fast, reliable Internet connection.
  • Have the software and knowledge to create and manipulate photos and screenshots.
  • Understand basic HTML coding.
  • Are eligible to work from wherever you are writing from.
  • Are reachable via cell, IM, Skype, etc.

This is a non-paid position, but you will have access and get insight into perhaps one of the most anticipated games of all time. This can include interviews with the Spore development team, hands out demonstrations of the full-game, invitations to Spore-related community events, and more!

How to Apply
Send an email to an email with the following information (all information will be kept completely confidential and will not be shared with anyone in any manner):
  • Your Full Name (preferably in the subject line).
  • Your City, State, and Country.
  • Daytime & Evening Phone numbers.
  • Your Email Address.
  • A cover letter telling me why you want to join the site.
  • What do you do for a living?
  • What is your educational background?
  • How long have you been playing video games?
  • What consoles do you currently own?
  • Please provide two NEW writing samples, each no more than 300 words in length. Obviously these should be Spore-related and can cover one of the many Spore-related news items which have appeared over the last few days. Please write these two articles as if they would be posted on the main site.

I will only consider 100% complete applications. After I have received a enough applications I will follow-up with the finalists with additional details. Due to the expected volume I cannot respond to each and every application, but I do thank for your interest and will be looking for more contributors in the future. Good luck all!

Spore: General / Some thoughts on the release date and what it means
« on: February 12, 2008, 07:31:30 pm »
It's been a while since I've posted here but I was thinking about the September 7th release date and it actually makes perfect sense.

From what I "know" about how Maxis releases fan-based content and tools they were going to need no less than 6 months lead time, so this date makes perfect sense. A few years ago Will Wright gave an excellent presentation at GDC about their entire "launch strategy" for The Sims and how they slowly released tools to the community over a 6 month period of time. So by the time the game came out there were thousands of Sims-related web sites, objects, tools, stories, and so forth. The community was built before the game, which was a large part of its success.

And from what I know from talking with the Spore dev team over the years they plan on doing this for Spore, and then some!

Hence, I would expect to see the following over the next few months:

  • Tools for ALL of the editors as they are going to need a ton creatures ready when the game launches - and where do think they are going to come from? That's right, us!
  • Spore "viewers" and similar tools which will allow users to view creatures/vehicles/buildings/etc outside of the main game.
  • An online website viewer which will allow people to view creatures/vehicles/buildings/etc via different categories.
  • Fansite kits (of course) as well as more "exclusive" content for hardcore Spore-related web sites.
  • Community/storytelling tools.

Of course, this is just speculation for my part based upon what I've heard over the past few years. But after next week, when I get a chance to speak with the Spore dev team in more detail at GDC I'll hopefully have more to report. But one thing I am sure of is that there will be a lot of community releases over the next seven months!

Site News / Moving to a new server, site will be down
« on: December 28, 2007, 10:05:34 pm »
Hey everyone, I'll be moving the entire site to a brand, new server Saturday night and I'll be shutting down the forums and server at approximately 10:00 PM, EST Saturday night. The entire move should take less than an hour and as quickly as the name servers are able to redirect the address the forums and site will be back up.

I don't imagine it will take more than a few hours to move the entire site and for it to be back up. So make your preparations for this downtime. Thanks for your understanding and the new server will be awesome (over ten times faster than the current one!)

Plus the debut of the new YouTube button I added to the site!

Everything Else / New Steve City
« on: December 23, 2007, 06:22:46 pm »
This is a totally silly web game where all you need to do is have people "visit" your city and it's gets bigger, but it seems like fun and few of the other gaming sites are doing it so I thought it would would be worth mentioning. So please visit my "New Steve City".

You can visit only once per day and each "day" resets at 6:00 pm EST. Right now we're trying to grow the city, so please add to the population:

To add population:

To add industry:

To add transportation (don't need it right now):

To add security:

To add environment:

I have also started to capture screen shots and I put this together. I'll keep doing this and we can watch the city grow. Very cool! The first image is from when the population was 62. I didn't think to take a picture when it first started, oh well.

Site News / The "ads"
« on: December 22, 2007, 08:30:59 pm »
Hey all, I just wanted to mention about the ads which are now on the forum. I realize that people might not love that these are on the site, but I am simply experimenting with them right now. A few quick notes on this:

  • I tried to put them in places which aren't too obnoxious.
  • The site costs over $5k per year to maintain, so even if I can get a small amount back it would be a big help.
  • I am putting the money back into the site. I am in the process of moving the site onto a new dedicated server. Right now the site runs on a Pentium 4, 2.8GHz. The new server will be a Core 2 Duo 1.86GHz with dual processors. Once installed the site should be significantly faster!
  • Also look few a new design for both the main page and the forum within the next 60 days.

So I hope you all understand why I can experimenting with ads on the site. I don't mind spending the money to keep the site up and running, but I also want to continue to upgrade and improve the site and this might just be a necessary evil in order to do this. Thanks for understanding.

Site News / Top 10 Video Games That Nobody Played in 2007
« on: December 13, 2007, 11:16:06 am »
Hey there, I worked pretty hard on this article to try to find for you the best games of 2007 that nobody played. If you could take a look and perhaps Digg it (there is a nice little link on the page itself now), that would be awesome. Let me know what you think! (but leave the comments in the main article and not this post, thanks.)

Podcasts / Send me some listener questions!
« on: December 01, 2007, 06:36:20 am »
Hey all. I'm about to record a new show and it's been quite some time since the last one so I need some questions so that I can answer them on the show. Just ask me anything you want on the world of gaming and you can pretty much 99% guarantee that I'll answer it on this week's show. But I'll answer them in the order they come in, so the quicker you send me something the better chance you'll have that I'll answer it (this week at least).

Either send me an email with your question or if you want you can send me an audio file (30 seconds or shorter please) to feedback at

And look for your questions to answered on the show next week! I probably need around 5-10 or so, so start sending them!

Spore: Roleplaying and Story Games / There you go!
« on: June 16, 2007, 08:39:45 pm »
Enjoy the new board everyone! Play nice! ;D

In case anyone is interested I'll be attending the Sci-Fi/Gaming Convention I-CON 26 next weekend on Long Island New York. It's an awesome convention with a huge variety of guests, and since it takes place on a college campus there is a lot of room and venues. Personally I really enjoy this convention as it's a great mix of gaming, sci-fi, comics, book authors and famous guests. Sort of the hodgepodge of conventions!

You can find out more at:

There will be other people at the convention that are not listed but who are quite big in the industry. Perhaps even someone from Blizzard might be there?!?

I will be sitting on seven panels in total and here is my schedule in case anyone is interested:

  • Friday, 7:00pm - 8:00pm, [396] Nintendo's Interface "Revolution"
  • Saturday, 4:00pm - 5:00pm, [854] Indie Game Development
  • Saturday, 5:00pm - 6:00pm, [855] Games We'd Like to Make
  • Saturday, 7:00pm - 8:00pm, [500] How to Break Into the Video Game Industry
  • Sunday, 2:00pm - 3:00pm, [702] Proper Use of Cutscenes in gaming
  • Sunday, 3:00pm - 4:00pm, [703] Violence in Media: Windup or Release?
  • Sunday, 4:00pm - 5:00pm, [704] To 3D or not to 3D

Let me know if anyone is going to attend!
