Site News / Working on a new podcast ... feedback requested
« on: August 18, 2014, 08:32:13 am »
For various reasons I stopped the podcast, mostly due to time and effort (on average it would take me around 20+ hours a week to do a single podcast) and although I loved doing it, it was a huge time-sink.

However, with various changes in technology and such I am going to try to do it again as I believe I can get the timing down significantly per week, perhaps just a few hours at most. Even if I can do a 30 minute show once a week would be better than nothing I would expect...

However with that being said the video game landscape has changed significantly. It's both somehow larger than ever before, but yet smaller if that makes any sense. More people are talking about gaming and doing gaming with YouTube and Twitch and such, but yet the number of games fragmented into so many different areas that it's hard to focus on anything specific. And I don't want my podcast to turn into something like "all Minecraft or all DOTA all the time". I am noticing that most of the most popular shows are extremely focused on just one game or one topic, which I find extremely limiting and boring personally.

With that being said I want to perhaps have the podcast not just focus on video games but ALL "nerdy-type" games in general. My knowledge and experience with boardgames, Magic, RPGs, and just everything and anything relating to gaming is fairly deep, nearly as deep as my video game knowledge. Plus I know people in that industry as well (not as many as video games, but still more than your average person).

I am thinking of bringing back the podcast but rather than doing 100% video games all the time I want to mix it up a bit and talk about a wider range of topics relating to gaming. For example, the new version of D&D is out and I might talk about that as well as anything in the world of video games. I'm still figuring out the format a bit, but I might just talk about a wide variety of games in the news segment depending upon what's going on that week. I would try to cover all topics and game types to give equal weight to a variety of topics.

My experience is that most people who are hardcore into video games also do other types of gaming. It's rare to be focused on just one thing and even people who are not "into" something like RPGs doesn't mean they wouldn't enjoy playing them. I sort of came up with idea recently as I finally managed to get some of my video game playing friends to play some D&D after pestering them for years to play ... and they loved it. In fact they are loving it so much that they are playing a weekly game now after it took me years to get them to just try it. I am finding that many of my friends who "just play Magic" or "just play LOL" I am finally getting them to branch out a bit and, surprise!, they actually love trying something new and want more of it.

So my question/request for feedback is as follows:

What do you guys think of this different type of format? The show would basically be the same as before, just a slightly different scope. It would be a true "gaming" show where I discuss all things gaming... The advantage of this type of format is that it opens up more people to the show. The disadvantage is that by focusing on several items rather than just one the show doesn't seems as centered and focused and might lose people who are looking for "just video games" and nothing but video games.

So does the advantage outweigh the disadvantage? What do you guys think of this new format? Let me know what you think...

PC Games / Wildstar
« on: May 07, 2014, 11:13:38 am »
Anyone planning on playing this? As some of you might know I used to do some pretty hardcore raiding in WoW for awhile, but stopped raiding when they made the dungeons completely mindlessly spamfests.

I know some of the people on the Wildstar team and I like a lot on what they are going to be doing on the raiding and dungeons ... basically making them super hard and rewarding guild play. This type of gaming isn't for everyone as hardcore raiding can make Dark Souls seem like playing an Atari 2600 game ... but I like it quite a bit.

If anyone is planning on playing in the open beta tomorrow let me know and we can hook up in the beta. A few of my old raiding friends are going to give this one a try and try to do some of the early bosses. Here is an idea of what to expect on the 1st dungeon boss ... it's just a touch harder than your standard WoW boss:

Site News / News Update
« on: January 02, 2014, 11:16:41 am »
Hey guys a few things are happening:
  • I am pretty happy with all the new spam filters I put in. No bots so far and spam posts appear to all be filtering automatically, which is awesome. So that's a load off my mind.
  • If you haven't started to follow me on Facebook please do. The link is https://www.facebook.com/thegamingsteve
  • I've been experimenting with promoting the Facebook page, and it's actually working. Will try to convert those into new forum members in a little while and see what happens.
  • I am working on an update for the front-page section of the site. Basically going to redo the whole thing and relaunch, at least that's the plan. But I have good people working on it and I've done this for so many other people at I might as well do it for myself.
  • Going to try to start podcasting and perhaps posting on YouTube (or both). The old podcast is still ranked pretty high on iTunes even though I haven't updated it in years. So I try a bit I should have a chance to bring it back to life. Might change the format a bit and include other games besides just video games to see how that goes. I have to get my equipment out/working and see if I remember how to do this.

So we'll see how that goes...

Site News / Gaming Steve Meet-up at Pax East?
« on: March 10, 2010, 06:06:45 pm »
So it seems that a fair number of people are going to be at Pax East in a few weeks. I am planning on being there as well, so perhaps we can have a little meet-up while we're there? I'm not quite sure of the time/place yet as I want to check out the schedule of events, but probably Friday or Saturday night would be a good idea.

So who is planning on attending Pax and would like to meet-up?

Site News / Forum back up
« on: May 24, 2009, 06:21:28 am »
Hey all, sorry about that. The site crashed and after I did a restart the main messages database for the entire forum was corrupted. It took all night but I finally managed to get it back working.

FYI, I do a data dump every day so worst case scenario I always have a week of backups. But everything is back and appears to be working just fine. Whew.

Spore: General / Problems I'm experiencing with the Creature Creator
« on: June 14, 2008, 10:53:13 pm »
I think I'm going to write to the dev team about this ... but I've actually been having a surprising number of issues with the CC. Just off the top of my head I have experienced the following issues:

  • The program crashes on me (it just completely quits) very often.
  • I have saved several creatures that are in my creatures folder, but aren't available for loading within the game. They just never appear. Even more perplexing is that is says in my personal Sporepedia I have more creatures available than it displays (i.e. I'll have 9 creatures in my folder, and it says I have 9 creatures, but it only allows me to select from 5 creatures).
  • Inside the game's Sporepedia I can only see my creations and 30 creations from Maxis, and that's it. Not sure if others can only see this limited number of creatures from within the game.
  • I have tried many times to download a creature from the web Sporedia and then load those into the CC, I have yet seen it work. Dragging the PNG file into the program itself does nothing and if I copy them to my creatures folder they never appear.
  • I changed my preferences to save all creature images as "large" but yet all my creatures are saved as the default size.
  • Lots of issues trying to upload to YouTube, often it just fails.

A little worrisome that I'm experiencing so many issues with this program. Perhaps in a few days when it's officially released these issues will "go away" but for now I would like to hear if others are experiencing these or other similar issues so that we can report them to the dev team.

Mr. Springy, the first creature I created with a lot of help from my daughter. He's quite bouncy and very friendly!
