Console Games / Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility

The newest in the Harvest Moon series now out on the Wii.

Gamespot gave this game a 6.0

Now, as much as overinflated scores irk me, I didn't realize how bad understated scores are by comparison.
If you are a fan of the Harvest Moon series like I am, this game has that core gamplay feel that made the earlier titles in the series the guilty pleasures that they were.

If you are a fan of the Harvest Moon series, and you happen to own a Wii, I would reccomend buying this.

That being said, it is not without a few flaws.

1. Loading screens. It reminds me of the PS1 days where you have about a 3-4 second load between areas. A little annoying, but not a game-breaker.
2. Frame Rates. The frame rate can slow down a bit when it rains. Again, not unplayably so, just slightly annoying.
3. Camera Angle. On the upside you don't have to wrangle with a camera. On the downside, this is because you can't. It is pretty much a fixed angle everywhere you go. Granted, most areas are designed with this in mind and you can navigate pretty well, but sometimes you just want to shift it over or zoom out a bit to see a larger area. Like the first two, a bit annoying but nothing game breaking.


These three items combines are not enough to sour my enjoyment of the game. There are enough new characters, animals, mechanics, jobs, and storyline items to more than make up for these three flaws.

In short, don't get scared off by the 6.0 gamespot score. The average user score (8.4 at the time of this post) is much more accurate to the game's true enjoyment factor.

An easier fix is to turn your graphics settings down to the very lowest. This seems to load the models much quicker, (though still not immediately like it was pre-patch). This will allow the game to remain playable, if a little harsh on the eyes, until they have a patch for the patch.

I'm a fan of the 132 - 2 setup myself.

As for happy faces, the only thing I think they might be useful for is "loyalty" meaning the chance of them converting to an enemy attacker rather than fighting until they are outright destroyed.

You do, however, want to make sure and keep unhappy faces out of the mix. You'll get riots that hurt production that way.


I just wished we could store more spice. I feel my "bonus to spice production" perk from my trait cards gets wasted because of how fast a T3-3 colony planet's spice fills up.

A: It is a technique for prepping an seasoning meats.

Once you get the reuseable terraforming tools, the ones that use up energy, you can pretty much terraform anything, so don't let a T0 with a red orbit scare you off. Even horrific planets can be wrangled into T3s.

If you are doing a lot of wrangling with an energy tool (such as the heat ray) I would reccomend building a colony first, even while it is T0. That way you can phone up your colony and buy a decently priced recharge while you terraform the planet.

Update: Turning all my graphics settings to low allows me to play without the lag.

This makes NO sense since pre-patch my system ran spore on the HIGH settings with no problem whatever.

Okay. I feel really silly for not knowing this. This is like a "you can turn you sentry" type tip, but just in case anyone else didn't realize it.


You can befriend and add creatures of your OWN RACE to your pack. Good filling out your pack for both friendly and agressive creatures. and you know exactly how good your allies are.

Okay, major sound AND animation lag issues, not just in space, creature too. Often I'll go through a whole series of socializing and it isn't until I start on the 3rd member of the nest that ALL the sounds from the past two rounds catch up and are played at once. Ugh.

I've got another display problem myself, though mine happens when I zoom into a planet, somtimes various plants/animals/buildings/pirate ships are slow to display. Some dont' display at all.

I actually failed a mission because I was unable to abduct a specific creature because my radar kept pointing to a patch of empty ground.

If you finish up cell stage as a carnivore, and thus will only have access to carnivore mouths, you can actually make your creature an omnivore by keeping the filter feeder mouth somewhere on the creature.

You can keep this filter feeder mouth on the creature indefinitely and is a good supplement to the predator's normal head(s).

If you find yourself low on food and health, you can easily munch on some fruit if you don't have the stamina to attack and kill something.

The benefit continues in tribe, as you have access to picking fruit for harvesting as a food source, among others.

My first was GGGG and quickly became unfun due to constant raids.

My 2nd was much better

BRGB which gave me the Bard trait. That bard +10 to all starting relations went a LONG way to letting me be friendly with even the hostile/agressive empires and make up their -30 with some missions before they got a chance to delcare war.

1. Seeing my creations in my own game.
2. The dynamic trait system, leading up to a final space trait.
3. Clothing editors: Awesome way to personalize your race.
4. Exploring in space. Never in any game have I ever gotten task-ADD as badly as with Space. In my book, task ADD is a GOOD thing. So many fun things to do, I can't help but randomly jump from one to another as a whim catches me.
5. Creature voices. The fact that they are based on the mouth and the scale of the mouth is awesome. The thing I loved most about my Teralyte (seen dancing) is its voice. Once I heard that voice, I knew I had my creature. Its body came after.
6. Sporepedia. Creating for creations sake is one thing, but creating knowing that others have a chance to not only see but play with your content is awesome. I always log in looking for new comments on my stuff.
7. Achievements. While it seems like every game out there is hoping on to the acheivement band wagon, Spore is a PERFECT context for acheivements. The goals are creative, rewarding and unique, encouraging play styles that one might not have otherwise tried.
8. Building editor. It gives me just enough freedom with the part placement to try unique and odd things while keeping things nice and smooth and easy to use. I think it rivals the creature creator for how much creativity it allows.
9. Music. The in game music is nice and dynamic. It never seems annoying or out of place. The music editor is a nice addition.
10. It has the Maxis charm. Every game I've ever played (back to Sim City on the SNES) has always had a certain humor and charm to it. Spore is NO exception. You can see the heart and love that was poured into the making of the game.

I find the outfit editors for Tribe/City/Space to be quite fun. Its one thing to design the creature, its another to dress them up. I'm surprised how 'good' most of the stuff looks on creatures. The space mask with the filter fits my Rasslan's tail eyes creepily well.

The fact that once you hit City/Space, the outfits have no in-game effect makes them even more fun, as you are dressing your creations for looks, rather than patchworking fugly stat bonuses.
