There's Democracy 2.  It's not new, but if you have the patience for that sort of thing it's pretty good I think.

I love turn based strategy games where you build an empire, but I hate the fantasy setting so much.  It doesn't help that the first game was largely hated.  I think that they're making a mistake by keeping that same brand name, I'm inclined to ignore it outright.  Still though, I'll keep an eye on it.  Anyone have any idea when it's coming out?

I've been learning to code for the past 6 months or so.  I've made some console text games like a clone of the game Drug Wars and Tic Tac Toe, but recently I've started to make some 2d games.  In order of 2D stuff that I've made, I've made a Breakout clone, Tetris, a buggy version and 95% complete version of Solitaire (I should really go back and finish this one), and a very rudimentary version of Snake.

Right now I'm working on another clone of the game Drug Wars but with a gui, which is like 10% done, and a clone of Conway's Game of Life, which I'd say is around 90% done.  I'm trying to expand on the concept for Conway's Game of Life[].  I basically noticed that a group of cells would often break off and be separate from another group of cells.  I thought it might be cool if we could show that these are two groups who can evolve differently.  Best way to do that is with colors, I thought, so I made it so that cells can be any color.  If a new cell is born, its color will be an average of its 3 parent cell colors, but randomly mutated very slightly.  Very very rarely this mutation will be a big change in color.

I experimented around a lot with how severe the mutations should be.  The version in that album tended to mutate the cells to be too dark, but I thought that the results overall were pretty cool, so I'm expanding on that concept.  If a big color mutation occurs, that cell will be assigned a trait that changes the behavior of that cell.  So for example, a trait might be something like a 1 in 1500 chance every turn of spawning a new cell if that cell has two neighbors (in the original rules, the only way a new cell would spawn is if it's surrounded by 3 neighbors). The goal is to get the game to produce a board which is resistant to completely dying off, but which develops competing groups of cells. I think that I might do something like have a max number of traits that a cell can have, and perhaps once this number is reached, it's then unable to breed with differing cells? I would need to introduce something that deletes traits or something, though. In addition to that, I'm also adding a bunch of other stuff that isn't really worth mentioning.

Anyway, here's a picture of the Tetris clone I made

And Solitaire which isn't quite complete!

Also, a mockup I made for the Drug Wars game I'm making.  Most of this is just MSPaint, so ignore anything that looks funny or unaligned.  I just had to get a rough idea of what the final version might look like.

I really have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, but I'm having fun  :P

They just released the beta on Monday.  It has a bunch of bugfixes, three new races, and multiplayer!

I think my favorite race are the Sowers.  I'm a sucker for robotic races, and I think the way that the race is structured is pretty cool.  To reinforce the idea that these are robots and not organics, you get -50% food income per planet, but 50% of your production is added to your food, so you're encouraged to get production up and running asap, which is generally how I play these games anyway.

My only complaint I have with the beta is that it seems to run a lot worse than the alpha did.  I'm not sure if that's just me or if everyone is experiencing that, but I'm hoping they fix it by release.

Anyone playing Endless Space?  It's a 4X turnbase space empire building game on Steam.  The goal is to build an empire by colonizing planets / star systems, researching technology, making friends / enemies with other galactic empires and, well, killing those enemies.  So your usual 4x stuff in space.  It's pretty awesome.

Anyone else playing it?

I'm actually the same way.  I can't play too much or I get too stressed out / exhausted.  I'm getting better at managing it, but adrenaline sucks when playing.

And the only reason I'm not in the NFL is because I don't play football.

You're kidding yourself if you think that 2 v 2's and 3 v 3's require as much skill as 1 v 1's.

So far I really like the game, much more so than Civ 4.  Combat is better, graphics are better, interface is better, love the fact that tech trading is removed (was so so broken in previous games), love that happiness is now empire wide, love that it feels like I can have large empires where as in Civ 4 I felt the game punished you a bit too much for trying to expand, city states are a great addition, limited resources didn't have any impact in my current game but I love the idea.  I could go on.

There are a few questionable design decisions, though.  Most notably, diplomacy is lacking.
-  Why can't I see the reasons an AI likes / dislikes me?
-  Why is there not a screen detailing which Civs are allied / at war with each other?
-  It seems that once you surpass a certain power point the AI all declare war on you.  On two separate occasions, I settled one city and 3-4 Civilizations instantly declared war on me.  I went back to reload and test it out and, when I don't settle the city, no one declares war, when I do, they all do.  I wonder if the same would have happened if my military was stronger.

Too complicated.  Having to go to castles to recruit / refresh my armies was annoying in Medieval II, that sounds even more annoying.

That planetfall mod looks very interesting.  I'm going to give it a shot, I'll post back here about how it is.

It's a shame that EA owns the rights to it.

Alpha Centauri II is not going to happen, at least not until 2k can acquire the rights to the game without spending a fortune.

There apparently is a god, and he loves me very much.

Spore has sold over 2 million copies, and the Sims 3 has sold pretty damn well so. . .
