Everything Else / Help with laptop
« on: November 01, 2015, 01:52:40 pm »
Hey people, I'm not dead yet.

Okay, so I have a problem with my laptop. It's a lenovo X61, which has a fancy monitor that doubles as a tablet to draw on, with a special pen that comes with the tablet. This has worked very well for years, but... once I upgraded to Windows 10, the pen stopped working. I already tried various wacom newer tablet drivers, believing it's a compatibility issue, but none seem to work. I tried to get help on lenovo's website and their forums, but the forums are dead and the support feature there is a cruel joke (it just keeps linking me to their FAQ after asking me to fill in details about my laptop for ten minutes). I also can't roll back to Windows 7, because the option is missing in the software settings (where it's supposed to be).

So now I'm at my wit's end, and I thought since you're a smart bunch, I thought it couldn't hurt asking you. Even if you don't know, maybe you can point me in the right direction.

It sucks, because this thing costed like a small fortune, so buying a new one is not really something I'm looking forward to. :(

Movies / Re: The Hobbit

The third part was great, make no mistake, but I can't help but feel it really should have been 2 movies, instead of three.

Also, I think that the death of Smaug was the most anticlimactic thing ever in the entirety of cinema history. They had us really wait an entire year for 15 minutes? Like, really really? And then Smaug literally dies on the first try? o_O

You heat it up, duh.

No, but at least the person that got my candle was someone who I worked with very close and is very awesome, so at least that's covered.

As a matter of fact I gave her a gift earlier that day as a little thank-you for being the best. :3

That's also pretty good, albeit meta. I suppose Hussie just wanted to ensure literally everyone gets the password right, so he couldn't do anything fancy.

Some venting is in order.

So we had some secret santa event in our department as some kind of after work event. Basically everyone buys or produces some little thing wraps it in and then everyone gets a gift at random, so it's like a surprise.

Now the thing is, I believe I got the most uninspiring, boring, stupid and ****ty gift ever gifted during secret santa. It was just a 0.2l bottle of Korn. Like seriously, that's it. Not even a funny modification on it or something. Just the bottle.

I was so mad I considered just passive-aggressively leaving it there when leaving, but instead I just gave it away to someone else. I mean, other people also got lame junk, but at least it was either remotely funny or at least somewhat original in its own way. A bottle of run of the mill alcohol you can buy in literally every supermarket ever is none of that.

Bah.

(I guess the bright side is that I don't have to feel bad about my own present. Some people really poured a lot of work into their gift and crafted something unique. I basically "just" bought something. (Though I spent a whole evening looking for just the right thing.) I would have been so embarassed if I would have gotten one of the bucketloads-of-work gifts.)

Yes, because in Homestuck there are no such things as multiple meanings for one word, am I right.

Also there went my theory of using the glitches to defeat Caliborn... Because Lord English was supposedly only killable by exploiting glitches. It would have been cool though, that Caliborn would ultimately sow the seeds for his own demise.

Anyway... Bye bye, theory!

So, I just gave the demo a try. After reading all those bad reviews and watching those rather bland preview videos and images, I have to admit I was positively surprised. I expected worse.

That is not to say, it doesn't have any flaws, but I like quite a few of the things they did.

For one, I'm a sucker for those mini events they had back in Civ 4 and so I'm glad they made this quest system, which also features some kinds of mini decisions etc. Though, I wish they would have given it a different name. Quests? Really?

However, the interface and world are just poorly handled:

The interface, while looking sleek and sci-fi I guess, is very hard to read, especially when you're not used to it. And even when you're used to it, you still have trouble making out the different shapes, because colour is used very sparingly. Building units and buildings in a city is horrible, because the entries lack the little coloured icons from the main game, which really helps navigating the build menu.

The same goes for the technology net, although ten times worse. I love the idea, but the execution is... not good. Again, the lack of actually little clearly distinguishable icons makes it hard to navigate, even when you know what you're looking for. On top of that having all the technologies radiate outwards makes it difficult to compare different paths at a glance. I guess it's an inherent problem with how a technology net works, but man, there must be a better way.

Then you have the problem that in the virtue overview it's hard to see which virtue you already have unlocked.

And don't get me started on the terrain. It took me a whole while (I already had my first outpost) until I realized that grassland, desert and plains were actually different terrains. They all looked the same to me when I didn't look to closely. Basically the entire planet is a big bluish-greenish blob. And miasma is so hard to spot that I actually have to resort on the tooltip to tell me if it's on a tile or not.

Interestingly all those negative points are solely about usability and not content. The actual content is fine, but the way it's presented leaves much to be desired. I suppose I'll wait a year or so, when it'll be bundled together with a bunch of expansions and cheaper in total.

What is Homestuck without Sburb?
Forty two adolescents having internet conversations and occasionally punching things.  Sometimes it's about an alien mobster instead.
Mmh, I dunno... Maybe it's just me, but the hook for me was Sburb and its mechanics, not the squabbling and dicking around.

So I guess a homestuck game without Sburb is not my piece of cake.

Some mroe info on the hoemstuck game:

http://mspaintadventures.com/KSupdate.html

From the sounds of it, it appears as if it won't involve Sburb that much, if at all and honestly I don't know how to feel about that. What is Homestuck without Sburb?

I kinda agree with Neo, killing off characters in Homestuck doesn't have the same impact that it used to have. Also, I wasn't a big fan of some of the art used in the flash. Especially Kanaya and Rose looked off, like not-belonging-to-homestuck off.

Other than that the flash was great. Not as great as Cascade, but it's hard to beat that. :P
