Console Games / Re: 360 Arcade Stick in the Works?
« on: August 19, 2006, 12:16:22 pm »
Damn, I might have to buy two, since whenever friends come over we play XBLA games almost exclusively. Yeah, all of my friends are Luddites when it comes to modern gaming... :'(

What!? No one has mentioned Table Tennis? I've had quite a bit of fun with it so far.
G.R.A.W. is simply a must-buy. I picked up Fight Night Round 3 after playing the demo and haven't been disappointed. King Kong is definitely worth a rental -- it's short and pretty easy to beat (but still really enjoyable), plus it basically amounts to 1000 hassle-free Gamer Points.

I'm thinking about getting this when in comes out. Uber-marketing/product placement aside, it looks like it could be a nice, relaxing game.
Of course, I could just wait until Nintendo makes a version of Animal Crossing for the Wii...

someone was gonna bring this up sooner or latter so i will. interpol sound like the same damn band just lame.
Everyone says that, but I really don't hear it. I guess Interpol's singer does sound a bit like Ian Curtis from time to time, but their music isn't even close. If anything, Interpol sounds like a much-less-funky Gang of Four.

1) First album you owned/purchased?
Michael Jackson Thriller and Duran Duran Arena (Christmas presents)

2) Most recent album you purchased?
Johanna Newsom The Milk-Eyed Mender

3) First live show?
Aside from crappy local bands, I went to Lollapalooza 1993 - saw Unrest, The Vulgar Boatmen, Front 242, Tool (they were on the second stage) and Primus. I still can't believe I saw Unrest. They were amazing.

4) Most recent live show?
I saw John Cale a few months ago. Going to see The 1900s tomorrow night.

5) Most overrated musician?
99% of everyone you hear on the radio. And the 1% is only because you and actually hear a Sufjan Stevens song on some stations.

6) Most underrated musician?
Robert Wyatt. At least the people who know about him give him the respect he deserves.

7) What's your musical guilty pleasure (i.e. name a musician/group that your gut tells you you shouldn't like, but you do anyway)?
I really like the Monkees

8 ) Let's say you could go back in time and bring any one dead musician into present times? Who would you pick?
Maybe Dock Boggs, just so I could hang out and drink whiskey with him.

9) What's your poster-child "band that broke up too soon"?
Can't think of any (with the exception of a band I was in years ago), but I can think of a lot who broke up at the perfect time.

10) Pick your dream band -- at the very least, vocalist, guitar, bass, drums. If you want to include a second guitarist, keyboards, theremin, lute, xylophone, whatnot... live it up, but you gotta start with the basics.
Clara Rockmore on Theremin. She was the greatest. Ever.

11) Name one cover version of a song that whups the ass of the original.
I can think of dozens.

12) Speaking of covers, name a song that always struck you as a great song if done by someone else.

13) Pick a dream collaboration, i.e. artist A working with artist B.
Don't know, I'd rather have a pleasant surprise, like when Scott Walker produced a Pulp album, or when Acid Mother Temple and Gong played a show together.

14) Best album cover art? (No Spinal Tap references)
Amon Duul II Yeti

15) Fat Elvis or skinny Elvis?
Skinny, but Fat had some good songs here and there

16) If all four Beatles were still alive, would they have cashed in on a Millenium reunion concert?
I think John would have kept his integrity. George, too.

17) Will there EVER be a more unrealistic movie moment than Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees beating up Aerosmith in the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" movie?
I've seen KISS Meets The Phantom Of The Park, so yes, there already has been.

18) Bono has been mentioned as a candidate to head the World Bank. Would you let Bono manage YOUR finances?
I don't trust his taste in sunglasses

19) Would you let MC Hammer manage your finances?
No, but I'd let him take me shopping for HammerPants

20) Lastly, the infamous "desert island" question -- pick five CDs you'd take with you to a desert island. To add to degree of difficulty, no Greatest Hits allowed.
Brian Eno Another Green World, Yo La Tengo I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One, Love Forever Changes, Robert Wyatt Rock Bottom, Pere Ubu Dub Housing
Of course if you asked my tomorrow I'd have an almost completely different list.

If you liked Joy Division, you have to hear the first New Order album, "Movement." If Ian Curtis had sung on that record, it would have been better than "Closer"...
On a somewhat related note, the most (personally) prized item in my record collection is a first pressing of the "Transmission" 45, their first single.

Music / Re: Favorite Punk Bands/Songs

Television definitely was amazing. Tom Verlane's current solo stuff is still good, too.
For me, I mostly did the first and second wave of British punk -- Buzzcocks, The Damned, Gang of Four, Magazine, Adverts, The Fall... and also the original California scene -- The Last, The Dils, X. Black Flag (before Rollins joined), The Avengers, Bags, and of course Black Randy And The Metro Squad.
Maybe I'm just old and jaded, but I haven't liked anything new in a long time, only a few things since Bad Religion released No Control in 1989. Even the bands that I really like that are still around (such as NoMeansNo) sound horrible these days, though I will say that the Buzzcocks still put on one hell of a live show.

So I'm going to be able to use Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and record music on my PS3? Neat!

If the final game comes close to what they're promising, it will be amazing. I'm pretty skeptical, though.

Everything Else / Re: PC Water-Cooling

I really detest fans... doesn't Machintosh run without them?
All the G5 towers are water-cooled, but they still have fans. Loud fans, too. They don't rev up much, but boy, when they do... :o

Podcasts / Re: What program do you use to download the podcast?
« on: May 31, 2006, 04:57:29 pm »
iTunes. I subscribed to the podcast on my computer at home, my computer at work, and my girlfriend's computer, too. I think I'm well covered.

Podcasts / Re: How did you discover "Gaming Steve"?
« on: May 31, 2006, 04:52:45 pm »
I think I found Gaming Steve via the GDC Spore video a few months back. Started visiting regularly and listening to the podcasts after that, then finally joined the forums last week...

Strange. Looks like they threw in a few OSX features into the PSP UI.

Console Games / Re: Which do you own?
« on: May 31, 2006, 04:10:05 pm »
Well, at one point I owned all 3 at the same time, but now I'm down to the PS2... and a 360.
Damn, I do miss the Gamecube, though. I'd pick up another one if the Wii wasn't right around the corner.
