PC Games / Infiniminer
« on: May 07, 2009, 07:37:32 pm »
Game and info located here. Might have to install some runtimes as well.

Infiniminer is a neat little thing. It may look a bit rough, but it's certainly a fun way to kill time.
Imagine a cross between Dwarf Fortress and Spelunky I guess, if that means anything to you.
If it's not totally clear, it's in the first person perspective.

So you have two teams, red and blue. You've got four classes: miner, prospector, engineer, and sapper. Each class has some different functions revolving around building, mining, and specialties like gold detection or setting TNT.

Depending on the server setting, each team has a goal to reach a certain amount of money, that you get from digging up the fairly rare gold chunks, or the super rare diamonds.
But really, you can totally blow that off and just dig up ore, build forts, ladders, bouncing springs, teleporters, zap traps, and stuff. Just a bunch of building blocks.

It was a heck of a lot of fun with just Celdur, Krakow Sam, and myself all on team blue building this big fort around our base platform.

There are no public servers; this is direct IP connection only, but that shouldn't be a problem. The game comes packed with your own server program. If you have a good connection, feel free to host and play in your own game.
I can host as well, if you need. Ace connection.  8)

I hope we can play some rounds, or just screw around on the map and play with magma.

Server is down due to lack of public interest. Thanks for playing, guys.

Here's an extra one for overflow, hosted by Celdur.
Network Name: InfiniminerGS
Network Pass: Steve

Whoever hosts this game in the network, use his IP in the game's menu.
Currently, Gauphastus (me) is hosting the game.
If anyone else in the Hamachi wants to host, changed your name so it has (hosting) next to it. People can just grab your IP from there.

CHANGE YOUR NAME so you aren't called "Player" like everyone else.
You do this by navigating to C:\Program Files\Zachtronics Industries\Infiniminer
Locate the file client.config
Change the HANDLE tag to whatever you want your name to be. Save. If Infiniminer was currently open during this change, you'll need to restart it now.
Thank you. It's a lot easier to communicate this way.

Movies / Knowing
« on: April 14, 2009, 01:22:29 am »
I just saw this on the big screen. It was pretty awesome.
We were planning on going to the movies after dinner tonight, mostly on a whim. So I go look up my theater showtimes. The only thing remotely interesting was this movie.
I read the premise. At first I made fun of it for sounding a bit like Next, but no. I was pretty well blown away.
Can't say I've felt that good about a film in a long time.

Anyone else gonna have a look at this one? I highly recommend it, if that means anything to you.  :-*

Art / Video Game Name Generator Boxart Challenge!
« on: October 21, 2008, 06:55:57 pm »
Greetings, everyone!

We will be using the Video Game Name Generator Site. There, you can generate game names until you get one you particularly like, or you can up the difficulty by taking the first one you get.
You draw boxart, or a simple cover art piece! No text or labels necessary.

This is not a contest and the challenge does not end.
I encourage forum members of any skill level to get involved. MS Paint, Photoshop, GIMP, whatever.
No sweat. It's all in good fun.

Since I'm so awesome, I'll make the topic this time around.

Gaming Steve Episode 61 - 03.08.2007

Can you believe it ... another brand new podcast? Are dogs and cats living together? Well they must be because I'm back with day 2 coverage from GDC 2007.

Today I recap the day's events all by my lonesome because everyone else had to go party the night away. So you get to hear little old me speak about Shigeru Miyamotov, Chris Taylor, Peter Molyneux, the annual video game design challenge, Eiji Anouma and lots more on a jampacked show. Enjoy!

Gaming Steve Episode 61 Program
  • Game Developers Conference Day 2 Recap
    • Shigeru Miyamoto is really really really popular.
    • Why were so many people disappointed with the Nintendo keynote ... except me?
    • Is it possible that the best video game designers in the world have the same family issues as you and me? (Yes they actually do!)
    • Recap of Chris Taylor and his Supreme Commander talk.
    • Can Peter Molyneux make you care about Fable 2?
    • Give three famous game designers a needle and thread as their interface and what type of games do they come up with?
    • Eiji Aonuma reflects on ten years of creating Zelda games and what challenges he faced, and still facing, keeping the franchise alive and fresh.

PC Games / Phantasy Star Universe
« on: June 25, 2006, 04:08:42 pm »
I'm a bit surprised nobody has mentioned this baby already.
It comes out in August in Japan, and sometime in October in North America.
The game is for PC, PS2, and 360, but I posted it in PC games because it seems like most people will get that version; the 360 version is apparently going to be a bit late, but it'll have voice chat. The PS2 and PC, as I understand, use the same servers.

Get most of your info from
Here's a quick link to their screenshot and movie thread.
A few months ago, there was a beta in Japan. Some of these guys got a hold of a cracked version and were able to play it.

And here's a bunch of youtube videos. -- the new cut-in chat, replacing PSO's picto-chat -- newman character creation -- cast character creation -- video showing a few weapons -- a general video that shows a bit of everything, very nice

Alright, so this game boasts a 30 - 40 single player mode with high production value. Voice acting, motion capture, and such.
The big deal here for me is the online mode. With all the improved gameplay elements, it's going to be a blast.

Improvements I've noted based on videos:
You can drive vehicles (including animals, water jet-bike things, and huge tanks)
You can strafe while shooting, and rifles have a scope view
Four races (human, newman, cast, beast), and three classes you can switch between in town (hunter, ranger, force).
Greater emphasis on your avatar portrayal; facial proportion grid, body proportion grid, and a height slider. Lots of costuming options to choose from.
Can buy new and different costume items in towns; character creation costumes are only the basics.
There's an 'estee shop' where you can buy hats, and glasses, and stuff.
Towns/cities are large 'lobby' sort of areas where everyone meets before entering the instanced missions/stages. 100+ people in there.

And I'm leaving because it's too damn hot in my room today.
Oh, and if you're wondering if the online mode is going to be pay to play, I have no idea. I can't find any official word on it, but quite a few folks are adamant that it will be.

Console Games / 23 eerie parallels between the X360 and Dreamcast

I thought this was pretty damn funny.

Don't forget to go to page 2. Makes it a look a lot brighter, if page 1 somehow depresses you or something.

Everything Else / Walk of Game 2006
« on: September 30, 2005, 03:53:36 pm »
Be sure to place your votes! Starts October 1st and ends the 31st. Register in advance.

EDIT: Why in the hell I didn't post a frigging link to the damn thing I don't know... but here it is.

Game nominees are --

Donkey Kong
Final Fantasy
Fox McCloud (Star Fox)
Grand Theft Auto
Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
Madden NFL
Mortal Kombat
Pitfall Harry (Pitfall)
Resident Evil
Samus Aran (Metroid)
Space Invaders
Street Fighter II
The Sims

Lifetime Achievement
John Carmack (Doom)
Peter Molyneux (Populous, Fable)
Sid Meier (Civilization, Pirates!)
Toru Iwatani (Pac-Man)
Will Wright (Sim Series)

Just thought I'd mention that I'm going for Will Wright. His games have satisfied me way more than any others.
As for Game/Character, I'm forced to say Castlevania. That entire series has managed to be consistently good.. for me anyway.
Though I hate to admit it, I'm fairly positive Final Fantasy will take it. Oh well.

Everything Else / I thought I'd try IRC now.
« on: August 11, 2005, 09:37:47 am »
Okay, I have no idea how to work this thing, so someone else will probably end up running it in the end.
I'm running on mIRC. I'm not sure if there are a hundred IRC clients the same way there are torrent applications, but whatever.

I just want to see how this goes.

Open up mIRC, connect to the Dynastynet Random Server.
Then find out where you can type in a channel to connect to, and type in "GamingSteve". I think it has to be case specific. That's capital G and S only.
If this works, people should be able to get in. Hope to see some of you soon.

NOTE : If someone else can handle this better, feel free to take over.
Also note -- if you join the room and I'm not in there, I did something wrong.

EDIT: Okay then... I tried to have a friend test it out. Got him set up with the program and all that stuff.
Then I tell him what to do, and he suddenly remembers that he has used this program before, starts lecturing me about how my setup is all wrong (but without correction), throws me a "BRB" after I ask him what I'm supposed to do, and he vanishes for over two hours.

Portable Games / New Super Mario Bros.
« on: June 13, 2005, 04:04:42 pm »
New Super Mario Bros.

I know it's not news, but I thought I'd bring it up.
Anyone else around here looking forward to these? I'm not a tremendous Mario fan, but good lord. I must say that the New Super Mario Bros game for DS looks like a lot of fun. I'm definitely going to prod my friends into getting a copy so we can do the multiplayer thing.
I hope it isn't mini-games or terribly short...
The trailers don't tell too much, but I'm sure I'll really enjoy the game. Wall jumping, using the other player as a platform, super huge mushrooms, and all that.
It's a strange thing, because normally I don't care about Mario games. I will definitely get these.

I know it's not portable but I thought I'd mention it here too --
There's this mysterious Mario 128. Some seem to figure that it's going to be a new Mario Sunshine. I haven't played that, but I really hope that it isn't. I would really love to see a brand new Mario game much like Mario 64.

But besides that -- what do you think about the new game? Heard anything I might not have?
