Storytelling and Roleplaying / dwarven fortress succesion game 3.0
« on: November 05, 2008, 11:57:39 am »
alright lets do this again
we now know what to do and who not to allow

anyone can join and its first come first serve unless if you want to skip your turn in line

if you know you cant finish a year don't join and if you have a busy week than say so

list of players:
Plank of wood
Mr.Wizard and his awesomeness
Krakow Sam*

thats all for now and here is the 1st year:

we have set out on a journey for wealth, glory and fame
after months of travel we found a good piece of rock with gems sticking out the side
this will be our home for the coming years

we also found a magma vent could be usefull but its infested with imp scum

after some searching we have found a nice place to set up, and so we did

everything goes smoothly and i make sure it all looks as glorious as it should be

before spring has even passed by we already set up everything we need including a farm
there is no water in the area so we need to rely on booze to quench our thirst, not that that is a problem

the miners have dug out the area to be more suited to our style and the mason has build a basic wall to defend our glory
it seems that it is needed since we have had allot of kobold ambushes

and as fortold we strike gold! the stockpiles fill with riches

traders visit us for goods and it is a good opportunity to sell my crafts
now if only someone would complete the damn gates

the gates are still not done...but at least we are training war dogs now

within just a year we have created a steady outpost with everything it needs to maintain itself
and the riches...the vast vast riches

this can only get better

Portable Games / Lock's Quest

anyone else played this?

its from the same guys that did drawn to life...but this is aimed more at gamers than kids

its sort of an RPG/ follow a linear story line with missions along the way

each mission you have to protect something with walls, turrets and trap etc.
when you are done with that several waves of enemies will come and you have to fight them off by attacking them directly and maintaining your defences

its tons of fun and its definitely worth to check out

also...the music is really great

Spore: General / Celdur's review on spore*may contain spoilers*
« on: September 02, 2008, 05:46:35 pm »
as some may know...I'm one of the 1st to hold the box in my hands...
i didn't even have to preorder it...a friend told me it was out and i went to the store...and there it was

anyway, i have been playing it all day and i would like to share my impresions
i will try to keep the spoilers to a minimum

i will just make a quick review of every stage and then a conclusion to sum it all up

so lets start at the cell phase
its the smallest phase and definitely the most polished one
i love the atmosphere and you can really feel the scale of the environment

there arnt many parts in this creature customisation isn't that fun
chasing down other bacteria is fun...and the stage is short so it doesn't get too repetitive
overall this is my favorite...somehow

next is the creature stage:
the basic idea of this stage is pretty simple...
you have to evolve by interacting with other species
you either make friends with them...or just eat them all

doing this gives you more evolution points and parts and if you do it enough then you will go to the next stage
along the way you can mate at any time to evolve and buy new parts with evolution points

there isn't much more too it...and it gets repetitive have to kill or persuade about 10-15 times before you can advance and it gets very grindy...i wont do this stage rather just make creatures

then you get to the tribal stage...
again a very simple stage
the way to win is to take care of all the other tribes
you have to make friends with them or kill them all
sounds kinda familiar but whatever.

to do that you need to build little huts that all have different tools...(you cant edit these as far as I'm aware).
in order to do that you need to collect meat by beating the crap out of local creatures and then taking their flesh...
there are some other ways but this is usually the fastest...
the tools are for example axes to kill faster or flutes to impress better

so the basic idea is you get out your weapons/instruments,
then go to the enemy
and then you impress/kill them
and then you do it another 6 times...
its pretty fun but again it gets pretty repetitive after a while...
and at this point i started to notice that there isn't much depth in any of the stages
they are all small and simple and there is not much too do

anyway...the civ stage
there are 3 ways to play this stage dependant on how you did before:
economic, religious and aggressive
aggressive should be fairly obvious...
and religious is pretty much the replacement for impresion
but economy is a bit different...

you make trade routes with other civs and this slowly opens up the option to buy those civs
all you have to do then is to offer a price and if you offered enough the town is yours
it gets a little harder with civs that dislike you ...because you need to give them gifts until they like you...
when you get a new town you can choose a different direction for that town so in the end you can have aggression economy and religion together

the best part about this stage is definitely the editors....the vehicle and building editor are great and you can pretty much make everything you want...
the civ stage is more fun than the tribal stage
but its still not very deep...and it also suffers from replayability problems
i will be making tons of vehicles though ;D

and then there is the space stage...

this is definitely the most in depth stage but surprisingly its also the most repetitive
you have an crapload of badges to collect and there a billion different tools and a zillion different planets...
but there isn't that much to do gameplay wise...terraforming planets is the most fun thing to do i suppose...but trading is a pain
especially because of the get SICK of scrolling in and out of systems and you do it ALL the time...
it makes the space stage even less fun to play...

overall the game is not in depth at all and repetitive...the editors is the most fun you will have...and you can do those from the main that is where you will see me most of the time
replayabilty is bullcrap since you have seen it all for most stages after about 10 minutes
the editors are the only things that are fun to do over and over and its the only thing holding the game together

I'm not saying the game is bad or anything...but its not close to great either
the whole game feels like 6 different minigames glued together by the editors

another thing i really dislike is the whole cartoony vibe around it...
i dont mind cartoony at all but the way they done it it just feels wrong and out of place somehow...

I'm betting that EA made it so that it was easy to use for everyone...making it not in depth
and also to make it more child friendly...with the furby like interactions

its a whole different game from what we saw at that 1st 35 minute introduction

all in all its still a fun game... but all I'm saying is that you shouldn't have too big expectations

thats about all i can say right now...i hope this helps you guys shape a better idea of what the game will be like

here are some sceenshots*spoilers perhaps*:

dont mind the crazy names >.>

TV / DR. Horrible's sing-along blog
« on: July 29, 2008, 03:28:50 am »
has anyone heard about this?

its sort of a TV musical but then on the internet...the videos used to be on the main site but now they are removed from there

you can stil watch it here though...

its about a 'super'villain trying to get big and impress a girl

its good stuff go watch it

A band of 7 dwarves who call themselves Led Edos(the Rack of Amazements)  ventured far into the Swamps of Boring to setlle a new dwarven encampment.
Their enthusiasm quickly faded when the swamp apeared to be haunted though,
but they wouldn't be scared of that easily!

And thus Duradgeshud (beardedfortress) was found!

alright...a new DF metagame...i hope we will do better this time

i will name the dwarves after the forum members once again

you may pick from the following (more will migrate later):

first come first serve ;)
if all the dwarves are taken i can still list your name so that you're next in line for the next migration

as said above...its a haunted swamp called the swamp of that should be interesting
this time i will do it like i did the little intro instead of doing it with the diary like last time

the area is a complete scramble with many mountain peaks and a huge river at the bottom

so the first question is: where will we 'strike the earth'?

up in the mountains, next to the river or somewhere in between?

i finaly decided to make a topic here...i made lots of creatures with the free one and i got the full one yesterday so...lets see what we have hmm?

these are the best i made with the free editor:

my favorite...its spiky (it was on page 3 of the best sporpedia creatures for a while. woo!)

it looks like a cross of a koala and a armadillo...

somehow people really like this thing...i think its ok

it looks really small but its actually pretty damn huge...thats the only cool thing about it really...

this thing only has 2 spine parts...and people love it..somehow

my attempt at a turned out pretty well didnt it?

it spits allot...i love the texture

i have more where that came from...but they are not worthy..check out my spore profile if you want more

the following creatures are made with the full editor...the 1st few obviously have allot of the new parts...since i wanted to try them all

kind of a bad angle...horrible angle has no has to find stuff with just his nose and his ears

its fishy...thats all i will say

more fishy! texture is perfect

it looks like a is a bird

more bird...this one looks pissed

its pretty damn fast...hence the name

thats it for now...more later im sure

im sure most of you already heard of this game somewhere...but there isnt a topic about it here it is!

its a new FPS in the making...but its not really your basic FPS

besides that it looks gorgeous the game brings new things to the FPS genre...i cant really explain it so just look for yourself

it could be a great game...but it might fail all depends on the controlls i guess
but i hope its as great as it looks
