PC Games / Re: Windows Vista

I have to complain, its annoying. Especially if the game minimizes for an update I didn't want, I can't get back in. So what do you do? Wait it out?

Everything is updated. Everything should be great, it gets a high rating, I just don't understand the lock ups.

AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 5000+ 2.60GHz
Nvidea 8800 GTS video card
400 GB hard drive
3 MB Ram
32 bit OS Vista Home Premium

I have never seen this, though my pc is a faster core2duo machine, but if the task bar freezes you should still be able to get back into a game/app by using Alt-Tab as this is a completely seperate process and so souldn't stall at the same time as the task bar.

PC Games / Re: Game of the Year

Crysis sold 80,000 units.  I'm not exactly sure anyone will be willing to front the money for a second title in the series.

Game developers need to stop planning for trilogies.  It's arrogant to believe that your game will be well received or successful enough to warrant a second.

With that being said, my vote for game of the year is orange box.

I'm not sure that the future of the crysis ip is linked with it sales figures, lets not forget that crytek are in the business of selling their 3d engine and thats where their profits are going to come from, and in that respect Cysis has done its job, it kept crytek in the spotlight throughout its development and showcased the features of the engine. If sales of the engine are good then it makes sense to continue the crysis games as they would prolong interest in the technology behind the game.

Anyway having said that i have to say that crysis is my game of the year. I normally play roleplays more than fps games and so would normally have picked oblivion, however crysis is the first fps since undying that has had me totally engrossed. it is spectacular, and despite the less than perfect AI it is both enjoyable and challenging.

I am familiar with boot camp, and think it will probably work fine... but i have a couple of words of warning for ppl buying mac to use as pcs.

Firstly bootcamp is still a beta product (it wont be complete untill the launch of leapard) ans so it is not supported.....by anyone.... not apple, not ati(for the drivers) not microsoft(for windows) and not bethesda(for the game) so if you have problems you are on your own  :(

and secondly bootcamp is currently an xp boot system and thats all... that means that you wont be able to load vista on your mac. Apple havn't officailly said one way or the other if the full version (or future versions) will support other os's. This is very important for gamers as it means they wont have access to DirectX10 support.

I am a mac user.... but i wouldn't dream of using a mac to run pc games, because lets face it, some of them have a hard enough time running properly on a pc, let alone trying to use a mac pretending to be a pc ;)

My Collectors Edition Neverwinter Nights 2 (The Lawfull Good Edition) arrived today, and after a few hours of play i'm already hooked, it looks good, plays well and gives you the usual 'soft' introduction to the system before getting right on with some proper action.

The character generator is great, but can be bypassed if you are the impatient type, loads of classes and races, so plenty of scope for making varied charactors, and as it is still a Wizzards of the coast game there are tonnes of spells and feats etc(as you would expect).

Also you get the full edition of the first game and both expasions in the collectors edition, so you get more hours of gamesplay that you can shake a stick at (can you shake a stick at gameplay?) and all for £35. Reccommended for all the roleplayers out there.

Console Games / Re: Reasons why not to get a PS3

The Cell Processor is weird... I don't know much about it... I think though, that it does in fact have the processing power of however many cores they say it has. Plus, it is super small. However, I think there was an issue with heat or something like that.

But, for the rest of us, we can get similar results by getting sometime like the Quad-Core that is coming out soon. And then the Quad Video Card set up is nice too...

Yay!

Yes the Cell is a strange one, let me explain.

A core is not allways a 'processor' as you know the term, it is a processing unit to some degree but does not have to perform all the functions of the main core. The cell for example is a 9-core unit with one main core and 8 slave cores which are similar to what used to be called a floating-point-unit, this means they perform specific funcions increasing the speed of the processor (because work is moved away from the main core) but does not mean the system is 8(or 9) times faster.

as a sample of things to come IBM seems to be leading the way here... their Kilocore project uses a whopping 1025 cores!!!!!!

http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/19508.wss

note this part:
For example, with the Kilocore1025, a user will be able to view streaming live- and high-definition video on a low-power, mobile device at five to 10 times the speed of existing processors.

This tecnology will eventually come to consoles and mobile devices aswell as pcs, but will probably debut on pc's a year or two before that.

ON TOPIC : I have owned consoles in the past and every time it has not been because of thier performance, but because of the unique titles that they had. There seems to be few unique titles on the PS3, and so I will not be going anywhere near its inflated price!!!

You might want to try out Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, I;m about half way finished and it is freaking hard.  Especially with the gold Medusa heads....

Just bought this game pre-owned... love it :), its a great game, and i'm not scared of a challenge, so hard is good. Thanks for the recommendation.

(Does anyone know when the next castlevania is due for release?)

PC Games / Re: ATI burns Nvidia.. here we go again.

Lets face it, no company is best forever, anyone remember the 3dfx voodoo series that ruled all things 3d... until nvidea crashed the party with the geforce series (and then bought 3dfx just for laughs), it happened because at the end of the day gamers look at the specs, not the name... no one is foolish enough to continue with the same brand just because it used to be best.

I am an Nvidea user, and have been since the GeForce2, but if ATI and AMD do good things i wont think twice about jumping ship... and my guess is, nor will most gamers. lets wait and see what happens, in a years time this board may be full of gamers saying how they will use ATI forever because noone else can match them... who knows?

(I am also an AMD64 user so I am quietly hopefull)

I have just bought a DS Lite (Black  8)), and am looking for some new games, I have the usual list Steve mentions to look out for, but would appreciate some more specific recommendations. I'm a bit of a retro fan, and so bought Ghouls n Ghosts, the Sonic games (I love platformers) and Street fighter2 for my GBA, and am looking for some DS games with that kind of feel to them.

DIABLO2... You can get it soooo cheap now (and often you can get an even better deal bundled with the expansion). I bought it (like so many others) on its release day all those years ago, and it is still sucking away my life. Money well spent.

One of my favorites, because of the excellent tie in to the movie was the Bladerunner game by Westwood Studios, but if i can get a bit retro on ya.. i spent hours playing BloodNet by Microprose, and loved it.

I havn't done this myseft... yet, but I work professionally with macs ( i recently installed an xserve with 3.5Tb XRaid, and 3 new intel imacs), so i have read quite allot about it. Performance seems to be much as you would expect from a well configured pc of similar spec. however since Bootcamp is still in beta, it is unsupported by every software provider including microsoft. i would recommend waiting until the end of the year when apple release MacOsX Leopard, which will include the full build of bootcamp.

It is also worth noting that apple has made no indication yet that future builds of boot camp will be able to run vista, it is an XP only dualboot at the moment.

Its quite interesting how the Mac Book Pro actally outperforms many similarly specced PC laptops in the Windows arena!

unfortunately many mac book pro owners have reported issues with poor build quality, including a variety of loud and annoying noises caused by vibrations in the fans, and also (more worryingly) overheating problems!
