Spore: General / Re: What do you think happened to Spore?
« on: September 13, 2008, 12:52:22 pm »
There is realistic cartoony that was in the original demo, and then there is the fisher price toys cartoony we got.  However, the visual art style is the least thing I am complaining about.  There are a lot bigger problems with spore that has already been mentioned.

Actually, Will himself said that they changed the graphics to go after the casual gamers.  In other words, like the game itself, it was dumbed down.  I know there are people who believe that Will can do no wrong and wants to believe that he would not screw you over, but look who is running the show.  Will is just the front man, its EA that is calling the shots.  I have no doubt that a lot of the game was stripped down so they can sell it as expansions.  How much do you want to bet the first expansion will be something that will fix all those annoyances that is currently in the space stage?  Lets go a trip down memory lane, remember this http://kotaku.com/370694/ea-charging-for-bad-company-weapons, EA was going to CHARGE for the best weapons that were in bad company.  The weapons were with the game, they were just locked and if you wanted to use them you had to pay.  They finally relented from all the attention, but it left a bad taste in many peoples mouth.  Tell me again that EA would not pull a stunt like this.

The ironic thing is that it was those horrible 2005 gdc demo graphics/demostration that got everyone excited about spore.  The people who were interested in it were the hardcore players because all the themes are more inline with hardcore games, NOT the CASUAL gamers.  It will be interesting to see how spore holds out, I just can't see that many casual gamers sticking with it long, and the dumbed down version(with the DRM) of spore is alienating the hardcore base.  I could be wrong and it can become a blazing success like the sims or I can be correct and it turns into vaporware in a year(unless they make some drastic changes to bring the hardcore group back).  We will have to wait till the shiny newness wheres off and its been out a while to know who is right.

I agree with the OP, while some problems are to be expected.  The Constant attacks and the micromanagement hell should have been blatantly obvious to even the most brain dead tester.   :P

Spore: General / Re: 1,000 1 star ratings on amazon.com
« on: September 09, 2008, 08:40:30 am »
I think its just 3 installs(which CALLS in every install), after that you have to call in and ASK EA to install again.  They might have removed online checking every 10 days, not sure.  THIS is what people are up in arms about, NOT so much DRM in general.  Like I said, you are RENTING a game, not owning it.  If the servers ever shut down, then you are screwed.

The reviews are fair I think.  DRM is a BIG factor in Spore, the way it is set up, you do not OWN the game, but are just renting it.  If, for whatever reason you install more than 3 times you have to call them, explain WHY and have to ASK to install your own game again.  That is beyond intrusive and a lot of people are justifiably angry.  I bought spore, I think the game is ok, however I have this nagging voice in the back of my head constantly worried that the game will not work one day (too many installs, upgrades, no internet connection, EA shuts the servers down..etc..etc).  This will probably be the LAST game I buy from EA with anything like this.  On a related note, I just read that EA is doing the same DRM for red alert 3, I guess that is another game I can remove from my list of games I want.

Spore: General / Re: Attn Maxis: Suggestions for changes to the game
« on: September 07, 2008, 09:19:21 pm »
I suggest they stop focusing on the casual and start focusing on the hardcore players, I really cant see that many casual players playing spore that long, even simplified it is still more hardcore leaning.  Put some actual games with some depth into each of the levels.

i agree with everything mentioned earlier in this thread.

Suggestions
Play some space sim games to see how to create a good space sim (galactic civilizations/sins of a sollar empire/etc), some of the problems in the space stage really surprised me, it is something I would expect from 1990's and not 2008,  I can't believe nobody pointed any of this stuff out.

Some upgrade suggestions
Communications - being able to communicate from the galactic level with any planet you visited without having to go to the planets/systems personally.
galactic bank - One galactic location where ALL your spice is collected automatically.
Galactic Stock Market - works with communications, Being able to buy/sell spice with any race you encounter without you having to go personally to the planets to transport it.
Home gaurd Personal ships that will protect individual systems
Governor Have an AI control each settlement that will protect it and automatically do any repairs that may happen.

I would ask you to watch the DICE videos on youtube.  You learn a lot about some of their decisions.  Blood and gore is one of them, as wll as why it's done in the style its in as opposed to realistic.  When you learn WHY they made some of these decisions, instead of assuming they did it just to get a wider audience, you can lose some of the animosity you have.  I'm not saying that the final game will be great.  I'm just saying that after 2 years of extra development, you would expect it to be better than the "original" regardless of what we imagined it would be.

That dice talk is a joke. It's basically saying how can we make them as human looking as possible without making them human. Because we only recognize intelligence if they look human. How do they solve that, give them human eyes. Better yet lets make them cute

If you went back to The Sims 2 boards when Spore was first being announced and look at the message board you see how large the young female community is.  You also see what they are saying, and overall it was, the creatures are gross, they aren't cute, why would I want to play with all of these things.  This wasn't everyone but this was the majority. So now we have The Sims which is the best selling franchise of all time, largely impart of the huge female fanbase. And we have Spore, a game many are saying will be Will Wrights ultimate achievement. Well if the majority of the females aren't liking the current look of Spore, we have to fix that. Because If Spore came out and didn't do as well as The Sims, well.. they just can't have that.  So the cutifying began.

This has nothing to do with intelligence. If the creatures in the cities or with spears didn't tell you who were the intelligent ones, then you could have had a little card pop up when you approach a planet showing the intelligent species. Problem solved without sacrificing art direction. This entirely governed by drawing a bigger audience.

The problem is that I just don't think Spore will draw the same (female) audience as the sims did.  The people who are the most excited about spore are male gamers.  The sims were a lucky (accidental?) fluke that drew in woman gamers.  The game dynamics are more in line with traditional male games.  I am not saying women won't play, I just do not think that will be anywhere near the sims draw.

Give it a little time and see, if a lot of sims women come in and play, that's great.  However, if its mostly the normal male gamer crowd I hope the expansion direction will change to reflect that.

Nobody said they hated the game now, however some of us are disappointed.  I am sure I will still enjoy the game, I just hate when developers take out cool parts/ideas that were promised or gave the impression that it would be in the game.  :'(

Oh, one more thing.  Will people PLEASE stop saying things like "the mod community will mod it in or someone will mod it in" whenever something like this happens to a game being developed.  It drives me up the wall when people say that, this is speculation at best and flat out lies at worse.  You have no knowledge it will happen and it gives covers for lazy developers to justify not including something or not fixing something.  >:( This is a pet peeve of mine.

So, what about when we throw someone out on an airless planet?  Will they explode into chunky bits like the original video or will it be magic DNA point again?  ???

I agree, I think the original game design was vastly superior to the final product.  the current game is just too fisher pricey.  Its like expecting to go to six-flags and ending up in Disney land instead.  its still fun but not the fun you wanted.

I didn't know about the blood.  So there is no blood now?!?!  Its magic glowing DNA points? That sucks.

Will spore still be fun? yes
Is it a let down? yes

 :'(

I am interested in the reason why Will went this direction.

One of the things that bug me in the CC, is the TAIL, or lack thereof, the CC tails are way too stiff, you can stop this somewhat if you use an arm/leg appendage but it still looks off.  I miss the smooth tail animation in the Whillosaurus, hope spore will have some tail appendages in the expansion.

hmmm, I noticed in the demo CC (haven't tried it with the full cc), if you make a creature without legs, if it slithers, it does not look right sometimes, it has a chunk of tail that disappears.  Especially, if you make an L form, were instead of legs it rides a tail.

I didn't notice the arrow.  ;D  The feet still should be rotated though.

that's just it, the head and eyes were pointing forward, but the feet/arms wanted to go the opposite way.   ???  How does the editor decide which way forward is.

Anybody solve this problem yet?

OK, back on topic.  I think this is a BIG annoying problem.  I usually do not add my feet/arms until I am near finished because I am not sure what I want to make.  I tried to make a creature a little while ago that I was mostly happy with, however, when I tried to add arms and legs, the stupid CC was insistent that I put the feet on BACKWARDS. I had to scrap the whole creature because of this bug.  I hope someone at EA fixes this ASAP.
